Its that time of year again for our anniversary ride. This year we decided to explore around the Black Rock Desert area. Left Denio this morning and are currently in Gerlach NV. Put in right at 200 miles today and a lot of it was steep and rocky. Don't have very good internet here so I am just doing a short teaser report for now. Here is a small sample of some of our pictures.

Some of it was flat and very fast riding.

Nearly every time you start a ride report I need to open Google Earth and I learn of another cool place to ride close to where I live.

Looks like fun! I spent a week riding around there quite a few years ago. We parked the truck at Trego Hot Springs and rode all directions from there. That is HUGE country with lots to see. I'm patiently waiting for the rest of your report and pictures...Have fun.

Nice! :D Looks like you took the tour of the lakes on your way down. That sure is a beautiful stretch.

Did you stop at Soldier Meadows and meet the new owners?

Made it back to Denio by 5 pm. 180 miles for the day. Decided we didn't want to spend a second night in the Denio motel. (the bed was bad and was very expensive for what it was) Loaded the bikes and hit the road. Just barely got home. Parked the truck with the bikes and all of our stuff including the cameras in the big shop. Won't look at it again until tomorrow, so no pictures from todays ride for now. Tired, but had a great trip. Will try to post a real ride report within the next few days.

    Stay tuned. :wink::wink::wink::wink::wink:

We were hoping to do something like this three years ago on our anniversary but we were to far away living in Pendleton. This was the ride we had planned then, but we decided to go to Juntura instead. Yes it is huge country and we will go back lots more to see and do!

We were finally able to hit some of the sites I longed to see three years ago. :clap A little late to see the leaves on the Aspens but there were still some fall colors for us to enjoy, We rode through Soldier meadows property and got a pictures of the Guest Ranch, we did not stop but plan to go back and stay, next year.

Since I'm a map girl it is nice to have a sweetheart who can connect the dots and put together some amazing tracks, not certain how he does it, and don't really want to know, our system works for us. :shog

Its great riding out there,a couple years ago 2 of us rode from Chico in nor cal to Jordan River Oregon, camped there for 3 nights and rode all over the place, checked out Silver City Idaho, the badlands around Jordan river.
Then we rode back through Denio and stayed another couple nights in Gerlach, rough livin in Gerlach but there just aint a lotta choice out there.

High Rock Canyon is a must see out of Gerlach, there's a BLM maintained cabin at the upper end of it. Then if you really want steep/rocky the Onion Valley reservoir route out of Denio will satisfy you,we took that route this year and ended up riding in the back gate of Soldiers Meadows after 165 miles of back country trail and jeep trails.
Good to have a solid GPS route for that one,and a light-ish bike as it gets ugly in spots.

Homemade raviolis at Bruno's in Gerlach are pretty dang good! Thanks for the ride report,I like seeing where other people go out there.

Easy to tell that you already know the story, otherwise, instead of hearing about a Steep-nap, we would be seeing your trademark smiley.

We left the Denio motel just before sunrise.

A few miles down the road, go through this gate.

Sunrise is still a few minutes off.

    Takes this road.

    Over Emigrant Pass

Little steep and rocky down the other side

Turn up this road that should take us to Vicksburg.

It does, but not a lot left at Vicksburg.

    Mine shaft

Road above Vicksburg. Got to check it out.

    Looking back towards Vicksburg

The road was steep and rocky and took us to the top of the ridge where we had a nice view of the valley below.

Found this road that looked like it would drop us back down to the valley.

    \

It soon turned out to be an extremely steep and rocky down hill road. Didn't get any pictures as it was too steep to try to stop for pictures. Very quickly reached the bottom.

Once back in the valley, road towards the Ashdown Mine.

This mine is still in operation so was unable to get much closer.

Could see something in the distance, Had to check it out.

Got on this road for a few miles.

    Took this road.

Turned out to be a fun road with just enough steep and rocky.

Come out to the Alta Canyon Road.

It has its share of step and rocky.

See what looks like a picnic table down below.

There is a picnic table. Break time.

    Continue on

    Steep and rocky ahead

Much steeper than it looks in the picture.

Almost didn't make it here, but I managed to save it and keep going. :eek1

    See water in the distance.

    Its Onion Valley Reservoir

Have a couple of roads to choose from when leaving the reservoir. Take this road as it looks less traveled.

Soon come to Little Onion Reservoir.

    Nearby rock

    Nearby cabin

Leave the cabin on this road.

    Snow

This road also has a little steep and rocky

As I am approaching the "main" road, I see a big horn ram in the distance.

It does not let us get close enough for a good picture.

Back track up the main road a mile or so to see Knott Creek Reservoir.

See the first other people we see since leaving Denio out in a small boat.

Leave the reservoir and head south.

    Pass this old ranch site

    Cross this pipeline

    Then pass Pearl Camp

You can barely see the road going up the hill to the right of the picture.

It did get steep and rocky in places

    Antelope

You can see the road going up the hill in the center of the picture. BTW; It was steep and rocky.

    Reach Paiute Windmill

Almost 100 miles so far. Time to top off the fuel tank.

Leave the windmill and enter White Rock Canyon.

Gate on the back side (east side) of Soldier Meadows Ranch

    Soldier Meadows Ranch

Came in the back way, but leave via the front gate.

    Get on the main road.

    Soon come to this sign.

We had only planned to stay on the main road for a few miles as I had a nice route planned to take us into Gerlach. However, we had already been riding for 8 hours and had only logged 110 miles. Much of our riding has been slow going. Only had 3 or so more hours of daylight. Need to pickup the pace if we want to make Gerlach before dark. Made the tough choice to skip part of our planned route and take the main road at least as far as the playa north of Gerlach. After a long hour of riding the main road we reach the playa north of Gerlach.

Have fun racing around on the playa

We work our way towards Gerlach.

Exit the playa near Gerlach as the sun came out for a few minutes before going down behind the nearby hills.

Last stop is to fill up the near empty tanks.

Go the the room and clean up and then walk to Brunos for prime rib dinner.

End of Day 1, stay tuned for Day 2 :wink:
