Strom or KLR for a tug??

    after all I have gone thru to put a hack on my 1000 Strom , I am now having second thoughts after learning i cant or at least shouldnt have a passenger on the bike.. so i was gonna go ahead and hack the strom and buy another 1 for 2 wheel pleasure but am now wondering if i should keep the strom a 2 wheeler and gt a KLR 650 for my adventure hack.. what do you guys think?? especially since I am 61? would the KLR be better since its lighter.. I have a dnepr hack.. THANKS

    The Dnepr is kind of heavy for the KLR, The KLR makes a nice sidecar bike for local trips, it would not be my first choice for a long trip and I would want a lighter sidecar then the Dnepr. Your V strom is a good bike to pull the Dnepr. Why not keep the Dnepr on the V strom and put your passenger in the sidecar?
    If you do go with a KLR, I would go with a ligher sidecar.

    You never did say how big the dog is. Can both fit in the chair? Can the dog ride in the trunk if you take the lid off?

    If you ever find yourself in Boise you are welcome to take my Vstrom outfit for a spin.

    I agree with Jay. The Vstrom is a better choice than the KLR if you plan to cover any distance at speed.

    Why exactly can't you carry a passenger on the strom as a tug? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    i could write a BIG book on what all I DONT know about sidecarring.. soo I wont even try to explain.. I have been getting conflicting ideas on this subject.. guess i am gonna just have to try it. WISH ME LUCK

    Now that is the best idea in the thread. I have seen some it works for and some it doesn't, pretty much like everything else that involves sidecars.

    I've done 2 up with my DL1000 Hannigan Dual Sport outfit. It wouldn't have worked with the stock rear shock though. I installed a HyperPro from Clause Kunicke (sp) and with the pre-load cranked all the way up and a 60 lb. dog in the chair I felt quite confortable. I also have about 30 lbs. of tools, etc. in the trunk. My wife and I have a combined riding weight of approx. 340 lbs. I ride cautiously with this cargo but feel safe or wouldn't do it.

    You planning on wallowing around in hip-deep mud or something? Just curious what's motivating your question, why you think you'll need so much ground clearance? Also can't help wondering how that decision is age related, like maybe you're having mobility issues that are affecting your mount/dismount? I'm 72 and my rig is based on an Aprilia Pegaso 650 Cube, pretty much the same rig as a BMW 650 and I've yet to get stuck or stalled out. Maybe I haven't frequented the same roads you're planning to ride but I've seen a bit of mud now and then. Also curious why you think you can't ride with a passenger on the bike?
