I’m a little late with my summer ’11 ride reports. :shog Several buddies -- who mostly just want to see their ugly mugs online -- have, umm, reminded me over the months that I need to get ketched up. :lol3

    I had a great summer of riding.:D

Here's a little preview of this ride(s) report, with little pictures.:lol3

A trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with a buddy in June.
    [IMG] [IMG]

A trip to Florida to see the in-laws.
    [IMG] [IMG]
(Yeah, that's the interstate that I'm parked on in the second pic.:waysad)

A trip to the west coast and then WestFest ’11 in Darby, Montana in July.
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Add in a little local riding between trips, [IMG] and, in all, I racked up about 15,000 miles on motorcycles in June and July.:D

    So, where to start?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
My buddy and fellow ADV inmate ABuck99 contacted me in the spring to see if I would be up for a ride to the UP of Michigan in June. I was – after a week-long trip to the beach with LandWife.<o:p></o:p>
I headed to Atlanta on Monday, June 13, to spend the night at ABuck99’s house. We got up early, early Tuesday morning and pulled out of his driveway at 5:13. Yeah, it was still dark.<o:p></o:p>
I was on my ’00 R1150GS, and Andrew rode his R1200.<o:p></o:p>
We had made a good run up I75 before the sun came up.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p>[IMG]</o:p>

Andrew was navigating. His actions at our first fuel stop filled me with confidence.:lol3<o:p></o:p>
    [IMG]<o:p></o:p>

After our initial stint on the super slab to get out of the ATL, we turned onto some state and US highways – and dodged in and out of rain a good chunk of the day. [IMG]
    <o:p></o:p>
    [IMG]
    <o:p></o:p>
We stopped in Indianapolis to see if we could mooch some couches upon which to couch surf from a buddy of Andrew’s, but the buddy was out of town – so we rode on.<o:p></o:p>
    [IMG]
    <o:p></o:p>
    [IMG]<o:p></o:p>

We stopped for the day way up in Indiana in La Porte and got a room at a motel after a 600- or 700-mile day.
    <o:p></o:p>
    That’s it for now.
    <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>Stay tuned,<o:p></o:p>

The next morning, we woke up tp another wet day and took our time heading out. We rode about 10 miles and stopped for some pics.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

I razzed Andrew a little that we hadn’t done that last 10-or-so miles to make the previous day an Atlanta-to-Michigan run.:zilla
    <o:p></o:p>
That Wednesday (June 15) was a wet one. We spent a great deal of the day in the rain. We still had a great time.
    <o:p></o:p>
We stopped in at Warren Dunes State Park and had the place almost to ourselves.
There were a couple of families scattered about, but it was a cool, rainy weekday, so there weren’t a lot of folks there.<o:p></o:p>

We had fun just knocking around the area of the eastern shore of Lake Michigan for a while. Andrew is a Michigan native, and he had spent some time in that area of Michigan in his younger days. Back in the 1900s.:augie
    <o:p></o:p>
We had lunch in Saugatuck. I’m not sure what I’ve done with the few pictures that I did take, though. :scratch<o:p></o:p>

I took this picture for my buddies in the Dualsporters of Georgia – the DOGs – thread.:lol3<o:p></o:p>

    <o:p></o:p>
We spent the night that night in a motel. I don’t remember just where it was. Maybe ABuck99 will chime in with a location, but we weren’t in the UP yet.
    <o:p></o:p>
Next up: The Big Mac -- and a tribute to ADV inmate phideaux and his imaginary friend.
    <o:p></o:p>

    Hey Land,

Good start on the trip reports. Your lack of timeliness will be compensated for by the depth of coverage. Yes?

The Indy Artsgarden beneath which you were standing is a multipurpose space. There is a fine Steinway grand piano in it that I have had the pleasure of playing. It is like being in a very live concert hall.

...One of my enjoyable musical "ride" reports.

Bucky, I have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pictures from which to choose.:deal

Here's one that I won't get to in this RR for quite a while.

My ride to WestFest in Darby, MT, was by way of California and the Pacific Coast Highway, so here is a little preview from that portion of the trip.:D
    [IMG]

Todd, that's the Caberg Solo that I've been wearing for about two-and-a-half years. I had another one (silver) before that, and a matte black one before that. The Solo is discontinued now.:cry I bought that shiny black one and the silver one that preceded it on closeout about four years ago.

The nose vent thing-a-ma-jig? :dunno Looks kinda cool, though, dawn't it?:lol3 It does seem to help some with fogging in rainy and/or cold weather.

    Stay tuned,

So Andrew and I headed out Thursday morning from wherever it was that we had spent the night.

We were headed for Mackinac Bridge, the gateway to Michigan's Upper Peninsula.:D

One of my goals was to replicate as closely as I could a photo that my buddy ADV inmate phideaux had made with his riding buddy SDVet. Now, I've ridden with, eaten with, hung out with, and swapped lies with phideaux on many occassions. Heck, I've sat in his seats to watch the Clemson Tigers play at Death Valley. I've slept in his guest room at casa de phideaux. I've enjoyed great meals prepared by the lovely Mrs. Phideaux at their table.

But I've never met phideaux's riding buddy SDVet. I call him phideaux's imaginary friend. I'm not really sure he exists, even though I've seen photos. Even though I'm about to post a photo that supposedly has him in it.

That's phideaux in the hi-viz. His imaginary friend, SDVet, is beside him.

They took that pic a coupla weeks or so before Andrew and I were there.

    Here's the pic ABuck99 and I took.:D
    [IMG]

After our tribute photo, Andrew and I strolled around a bit. Then we headed across the Big Mac.

Dang it, Erik, that makes me wish I hadn't posted a pic of my mug and had just told you to look for a fat guy with facial hair. At an ADV event.:rofl You'd've been busier than a one-armed man in an a$$-kickin' contest. Or is it a one-legged man in a wallpaper-hangin' contest? :scratch

Pretty easy to believe that he has an imaginary friend after that, ain't it?:lol3

It'll be a while, phideaux, but I'll get to our WestFest and post-WestFest shenanigans eventually. In the meantime, I miss this little spot in Montana.

When last I left you, ABuck99 and I were riding across the Big Mac.

We stopped in whatever city this is in the UP.

I popped into a shop to look for a sticker, and when I came out, ABuckk99 was talking to a fellow who is an ADV inmate. Unless that guy chimes in or Andrew remembers his username, we'll never know who it was, 'cause I have no clue.:baldy

We took MI 123 up to Lake Superior. (Some of these pictures are likely out of sequence. :bluduh

Andrew and I continued up MI123 on that Thursday and ended up in Paradise at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.

After strolling around the grounds of the shipwreck museum, Andrew and I geared up and mounted up to head toward Marquette, where Andrew has a college buddy. We rode fo a while on MI 123 and took some dirt for a while after we came up to a road closure.

After riding around back there for a while -- and hitting some deep sand -- we stopped on a little bridge for a little break.

Andrew commented that it would be cool to post a pic of our bikes for our buddies back in the Southeast. I reached for my phone. I searched for my phone. I dug around in my bags for my phone even though i knew I hadn't put it in them. No phone. Crap. :baldy

I knew that I had had it back in the parking lot of the shipwreck museum -- where I had put it in airplane mode to attempt to save some battery life. :bluduh

We headed back to Paradise to see if it was still in the parking lot or someone had turned it in. No joy.:cry We snagged a motel room in Marquette and had dinner and barley pops at a really cool tavern made from logs -- and with log furniture.

To make a long story short, I bought a new phone in Marquette and ended up buying my old phone back from some guy who contacted me weeks later and said that he had bought it at a flea market -- near Oklahoma City, about 1200 miles from where I lost it.:huh (I had reported it lost/stolen when I bought the new phone, so it was basically useless as a phone to anyone else.)

Anyway, we met up with Andrew's college buddy Andy for some lunch in Marquette and made preparations to head to Andy's family's "camp" on a lake near Big Bay. The "camp" is actually a "cabin." The "cabin" is actually a beautiful little house with a great view and great amenities. We got up there on Friday evening and stayed until Saturday late morning. It wasn't quite 24 hours that we were with Andy, but we packed a lot into that time. Have a look.

Andy makes this cool furniture from bicycle parts.

It got a little cool in the evening, so Andy and I scrounged around in the closets and found these stylin' sweaters.:lol3
