Swapping final drives on a SWB R65

    My 81' R65 tends to spit just enough final drive gear lube to make a mess of the sides of my rear tire..
    The level never seem to drop much, if at all.. Just enough to make a greasy mess..

    Anyway, I found a nice replacement final drive and I'm going to swap them out, so I can repair the seal on my original.. I got the final drive for $120 and I figure I'll change lube and slap it on, BUT, is there any thing I should look out for when performing this task?? I have a Clymer, and will follow it, but I was just wondering if there's anything else to keep my eye on before or after (or during) the swap?

    Since it'll be another month before the salt's cleared off, I can't ride, so I might as well fix..:lol3

    Flat top carb rebuild kit showed up yesterday.. :D

    Have you checked the orings on your brake cam? I had the same issue, thought it was the seal, but it was the wrong sized o ring. Very messy.

    There is also a pressed in brake locating pin that can be loose. Check that also, if you can pull it out use some black permatex #2 to seal it. The big seal isn't that hard to replace (looky here). The outer cover comes off pretty easy, but check that pin and as Jenna mentioned the o-rings too.

    Thanks to the both of you! I haven't had a chance to do much inspection at all, but will be digging into it next weekend. 5" of snow last night does that. :)

    Anyway, I actually traded an unused fishing boat for this bike last spring... I did some cosmetic work but other than carb balance and valve adjust, and full fluid change, I didn't get very far with it.. A month later a 05' 1200GS wandered into my life, so the little R65 was sorta forgotten in the back of the garage. When I had the desire for an airhead, I rode my monoshock R80..

    So this year is different, and I'm going to ride both airheads more.. I'm slapping a new rear tire on the R65 next weekend, so I'll take a good look at the brake parts as a cause for leaks..

    My spare final drive is still a viable replacement, though..:evil

    When bolting in the 'new' drive, before tightening the Swingarm/FD fasteners, install the axle. There is enough play in the mounting that the axle can bind if this isn't done.
