    Howdy,

I've got SYM's HD200 on my radar screen for this Summer, if all goes well! My question is this: How is the braking? I've read a few..reviews wherein there was some degree of criticism over the rear drum brakes.

I have a 2008 SYM HD200, and the rear brake isn't anything to write home about, but it gets the job done with thefront brake, which does most of the stopping on all bikes.

The newer year models have a disc brake in the rear now by the way.

I was trying to think of a way to put my opinion into words but, HelmetMan nailed it.

If the rear drum brake is no more effective than the front,
    which is certainly lacking.... well,
thank God the HD200 is not heavy and doesn't go too fast.

Like I said in an earlier post, the front brake was VERY anemic compared to the effectiveness of the '08s rear disc brake.

And sadly, I do in fact have reservations about this......

    rhys,
What US version 2008 HD200 has a rear disk?
BTW, my 2008 with front disk and rear drum does brake quite well.

I'd be very interested if someone does a test between the models - one with rear disc, one with rear drum and see how much difference there is in "real life" type braking, i.e. panic type stops.

Most braking is with the front brake anyway so, I'd like to know how much the rear disc would add. Maybe one of the magazines will do it.

    Howdy,

Jersey Biker: So you find the HD200s stopping distances to be satisfactory? I'm really intrigued with these scoots, but my nearest dealer is 130 miles away.

Larry - short answer is yes but I've been biking a long time, started long before bikes had disc brakes. Maybe that affects my opinion.

I've tried panic stopping and the brakes "get the job done" but, no one is going to praise them.

Maybe you can find someone nearby who will let you try theirs. If you are near me, you are welcome to stop by and try my scoot.
