I did the route today staring in Greene RI on my new SA 1290. I was a bit concert due to the 90/10 tires. Turns out there was very little dirt at all. Almost all tar except for barre and Wendell. Kind of a blur I have to admit. I didn't stop to take notes. The Wendell section was a bit tricky tho. A couple sections of loose washed out roads. I'll say the Ktm electronic suspension is pretty sweet. Selectable damping mad for pretty soft ride over the few whoops. But the nearly slick tires hab me dancing on the pegs.

Route is surprisingly dry at the moment. Not sure about Loring Hill though.

Thanks, MADS, I was just thinking about this. Your photos sure make me want to go for a ride.

PS. Still a bit soggy in RI!

Haven't been around ADV in a while, but remembered this thread as I was getting stuff together to get the CRF ready for the season (I know, I'm late). It also occurred to me that I'm starting where I live, near Greenfield, and riding to my fiance's near the CT/RI part of the route... I know how I'm getting there! If I remember I'll get the gopro hooked up and mounted to the helmet finally and maybe get some shots.

Is version 4 still the latest version?

ok,i started at twisted throttle yesterday morning headed north on the puppy dog to the beach.
it was a great ride for the 1190R The offroad sections where rather dry in comparison to most of my rides in that area.
The only glitch was at Wickett Pond road going around the gate led to a park with a gate at the other end. I think it is for pedestrians only. Not to big of a deal except there is a parks office at the corner of Wendell rd. All in all it was a 435 mile round trip,my longest ride in one day.
thank you again for taking the time to post this for all of us to enjoy!

We rode it yesterday as well and got to that same gate. There were joggers using that road so we opted to find a bypass. I was glad we did as we saw that same ranger station next to the closed gate at the other end.

i'm fairly local to Wendell State Forest and i think the gates were closed because the "beach area" of the park which is on that road is not open for the season yet. i ride through there often in the summer and it is fine to ride through if it's open; the rangers in there have always smiled and waved as i rode by.

It's tough to figure out when that area is open and when it's not. We've ridden through after hours (5pm?) as well and found the gates closed...so we just rode around. It certainly is a rush when you realize the gate is right next to Park headquarters. :ksteve
Is it possible to take a left on Brook Road (northbound) and come out on Wendell Rd if the gate is closed?
Originally Mrs Trip and I rode up Jerusalem Rd and onto Davis Rd, but there is a definite gate there and then Davis Rd is kind of rough and comes out smack-dab in the middle of a farmyard. Not one I would recommend even with my admittedly loose standards of legality.
I am really glad to see you guys enjoying the ride. Did you make a loop with the Trans-Mass?
PS: there's bonus points for photos!

if that gate is locked at the corner of Ruggles Pond and Jerusalem Rd., you can back-track and take Brook/Marshes Rd. which will dump you out on Montague Rd. just to the East of the Ranger station. frankly, imo, it's a nicer road anyway! for more of a challenge, you can continue on Jerusalem Rd. all the way down to Davis Rd. and then come back up on Montague Rd.- disclaimer: i have not tried to ride this section yet this year and it is not maintained much so ymmv!

lol, @Rhode trip just Bruced me on that post!

btw, how is that section now in So. Athol/Petersham (can't remember exactly where!!?? is it Flat Rock Rd.??) that someone had covered with large gravel and boulders in the road to discourage using it (even though it appears to be a legal public roadway)? i have ridden it in the past, but always am leery that i'm gonna encounter some irate homeowner with a shotgun....

I rode it all, twice and didn't notice a section with boulders and gravel. There was a section that was pretty loose stuff, it reminded me of being freshly harrowed. That might have been Flat Rock.

Ha. I've never ridden the Brook Road way...next time we'll check it out. No great shakes riding through the picnic area anyway.

You are referring to what I called the "zen garden". I think it is after Flat Rock Rd and the last time I was through there (last Year?) it had been cleared. I was disappointed.

The other part I'm wondering about is north of Barre Dam (can't remember the name off the top of my head) but it was gated randomly last year... I assume its open now since IronIvar and Gearhd didn't mention it.....

There were no other gates closed other than in Wendell. We tried a "road closed" bypass to try and get over to Mormon Hollow Rd. I highly recommend NOT attempting that! We should have walked it first.

Was that the Jerusalem Rd. to Davis Rd. section (http://www.mass.gov/eea/docs/dcr/parks/trails/wendell.pdf)?

If so, i rode it last year without too much grief, but if it hasn't been maintained, it might be small bike only now.

I commend Rhode Trip for creating this ride. I also like that it is being used. Use it or lose it. If you find a road blocked, investigate it. Many land owners like to deny access. If they get away with it, stuff is lost. A good place to start is with the Town Engineer in the town that the problem arises. They usually have a list of all "town" roads. The state gives the towns money based on the totale mileage. I know in the town I live in, the engineer told me that the road has to be open. No gates or cables. Don't let a landowner do that to you. And if anyone ever points a gun at you report it. I had an M-1 pointed at me and was told to beat it. I was 20 (40 years ago)at the time and let it go. never again.

ahhhh, that looks like Damon Camp Rd. I have not tried to ride thru there for several years; it used to be rideable; on an ATV anyway! :p3rry

the road to the left on your map is Jerusalem Rd. BTW, there is a short hike to a nice view off the ledges above Jerusalem Rd. Park at bottom of trail and hike up. there used to be a sign there, not sure if it's still up. Really special when the mountain laurel is in bloom!

Could someone on a little bike try riding Jerusalem thru to Davis to Montague Rd. and report back please? :-)

This is the ledges up on Jerusalem Rd.

I've always thought that area might provide a pretty good location for some stealth camping. Not that I recommend that type of thing......:uhoh
