Ok so now i'm intrigued, what happened or nearly happened, what went wrong?
Some good advice and photos in here, shooting while riding can be quite fun for a unique perspective on your rides.
For me, holding a camera in my left hand works, never bothered with a tether or using cameras that I thought were disposable, instead trusting myself to get the shot safely.
While I don't bother carrying a big camera these days, I alway have a non-DSLR camera in my tank bag/box with easy access and never dropped one yet.
For shots that I can't safely get by hand I use a Manfrotto Magic Arm to position a camera where I please.
Then again it could be safer or easier to have a pillion to shoot for you.
