I've worked a few (20+) hours on this to share with you trails of Taylor Park and its surrounding area. I've put together an extensive list of trails that you can export to a GPS system to use. Some of these trails I've taken from traildamage.com, mtbproject.com, staythetrail.org just to name a few. Some trails I've actually tracked myself using a GPS unit.

Last summer I was in Taylor Park and was riding solo (stupid I know, no other riding buddies) and as I was on top of American Flag Mountain I saw trails in every direction and I wanted to know where they go. I had a check-in system with my Dad and with limited time and fear of getting stranded or lost I stayed on the trails I knew and said I'd be on. When I got home I started this project. I ordered a map of the area, (BLM map if I recall) and it had most of these trails.

I really enjoyed putting this together, I spent a lot of time taking the tracks that I found by others and cleaning them up by matching the tracks to the satellite imagery by adding more points. I've got more to go for sure as you can tell by zooming in on a few maps. Also doing the research of the trails and the area I learned a a lot about the history, really good stuff there.

    Last thing…

I was looking through message boards from MTB and hikers looking for information on these trails, common remarks was the condition of the trails because of ruts and trail damage from braiding. Let's not be "that guy or group". Please respect the land and the multiple uses it serves to others. I live north of Houston and the trails we ride in the national forest are being threatened to be shut down for these reasons. Our lands is beautiful and diverse, as an out of towner to Colorado, please don't thrash someone else's back yard. My Dad has been going to that area since the 50's and it's changed a lot, as it becomes more and more popular it's only that much more important we take care of it.

    Thread lightly adventurers.

I'll be in Taylor Park late June this year, using this as an opportunity to add to this even more!

If a mod can help me upload this to the site, currently not allowed. I can share it through google drive for now or if it's not allowed I understand. It's a 10MB KMZ file.

    How to read the maps:
First thing to do is download and install google earth.

You will see something like this: American Flag Mountain - 759.2E - JT.

It means: Trail Name - Trail Number - JT=Jeep Trail, ST=Single Track

Trail Colors: Means absolutely nothing at this point, only have different colors to differentiate from others in the area.

Export Trails: If you'd like to export a trail to the GPS unit, you can right click on the folder for the trail, or the trail itself and choose 'save as'. Once it's saved, (choose KMZ) you can import it into Basecamp or your choice of software then load it on to your GPS unit.

If you click on the MVUM map to show it on Google Earth, it will take some time to load. Don't close out of the application if google earth shows - not responding. I've got a pretty fast computer and it takes 10 seconds to load sometimes.

    Your feedback:
    • If you have GPS tracks for any of the "Incomplete Trails" please send them to me and I'll update the file.
    • Any ideas or thoughts on presenting the data, making it more user friendly
    • If you know for sure a trail that I've marked is not for motorized use, or trail number is wrong please let me know so I can correct it.

    Future Versions:
    • Mark roads for street legal use only
    • Map trails marked as incomplete
    • Embedded youtube videos of the trails
    • Add Trail difficulty
    • Expand trail search
    • Mountain Information (Names, Elevations)
    • Creek and lake names

    1) I think I have Track for all open roads & trails in my file. The bad news is I don't have active logs showing speed for all Tracks. Did you look at it?
    2) With good Tracks a perhaps a few way points with notes, what else do you need?
    3) If you don't know which trails are for motorized use it is only because you did not look at the MVUM:

    1. I did, no worries.
    2. That may be it, hopefully I'll be able to add a few waypoints, notes and perhaps pictures next visit.
    3. I meant to say Single Track vs. Jeep trails. I did my best to label each trail ST or JT as it's labeled on the MVUM. I read on a message board that part of Doctors Trail (South West Portion) that was previously ok for motorized traffic was closed only to MTB and hikers and the MVUM hadn't been updated yet.

Thank you for the map. I will be spending time this summer in Buena Vista and this will help. As I ride I can contribute as well.

Any tracks or POI's will help I'm sure. I'm glad to hear some are finding it useful. Check back in a couple days, I plan on updating the file with some improvements. Just trying to find time between working around the house, work, family, etc. etc.

Took a little longer to finish up the next revision than expected. My next project is putting this together in basecamp.

If anyone has the trail names of the trails that are labeled "unknown trail name" I'll be sure to put it in my next release.

    Download the KMZ here.

Where did you get all these tracks? They look very precise.

Real Active logs? they don't have time stamps.

From Satellite photos? Some of them differ from my active logs.

    From maps?

I made them by tracing satellite images.

That is what I assumed. I got most of mine as Active log from other riders. I prefer active log if possible because they have speed between each track point, a very good indication of difficulty. I had hand drawn the ones I didn't have but have now replaced them with yours.

You had a few tracks that I did not have from the MVUM, I will go back and check. Are you sure all your tracks are all on the MVUM?

To each their own. I've put a mvum image overlay toward the bottom of the map so you can actually see the mvum map and the tracks I drew. Only a few where off.

I rode 623 from Italian creek to lily pond last year. I used a garmin to map my track. You can see how far off the track is by using to mvum overlay. If you compare the track to satellite it's more accurate than the mvum in this case.

Yes I noticed this big difference in accuracy. However I was talking about Open vs Closed not accuracy of Open trails.

Ah, yea. That I'm not sure of. That geo referenced mvum is the latest I've found (2013). I'd have to cross check that mvum with the one from 2015 mvum that's not geo referenced. Next version perhaps.

Worked on it today, down to a very few. I think they are all short dead end things. Probably used a lot even if not on VUUM.

Guess I need to get a paper Gunnison MVUM so I can highlight each route after verifying I have it in my electronic file.

The one thing I did in my file is split what forest says are roads what are quad trails and what are single track with a different colors for each.

Thought I would have to filter it to get it to fit. Any one know what the max file size is?
