Tenere 660, buying in Mexio and ridngg back into the US

    Is it actually possible to fly to Mexico, buy a Yamaha Tenere xt660, ride it back into the U.S. and successfully have it titled and insured?

    The short answer is no. The long answer is maybe, but probably not. Otherwise, you'd see a lot more of them in the States. Same for the Africa Twin and other tasty bikes that were never sold in the US market.

    But enough money can fix many problems if you're dead set on it.

    Why not buy it in Mexico, slap Mexican plates on it, and when you cross the border to the US just buy US insurance the same as the Mexican nationals do? I see Mexican plated vehicles in Texas all the time.

    The fact that you could buy a 660 in Mexico and not in the USA or Canada is just plain upsetting someone has their head up their:topes

    There is a beauty on the floor of the Guadalajara dealer. MXN/USD Exchange rate is about 12.7:1 so now would be a great time to buy one.

    plenty of people do buy cars abroad and title them in the us so why not a bike, contact such company and ask for help.

    Yamaha probably thought it would take too long to recoup the ~$100k investment needed to certify the bike in the US.

    Most of those are cars that are either over 25 years old and exempt from the emissions laws or newer cars that are already US compliant and purchased abroad for other reasons.

    If the vehicle is less than 25 years old and hasn't been certified for import, you'll have to jump through many, many hoops to legally import, register and insure it. In most cases, it's simply not worth the time and money involved.

    If your state allows, treat it like like plating a dirt bike. I'm pretty sure it would be possible to do in Colorado.

    Just saw you are from the springs. Haha do it. Bring it up, get the vin checked, equipment inspected, go get a title and BOOM plated "dirt bike"

    You'll need a valid US title to register a bike in any state...which you won't get if you buy it in Mexico and ride across the border. And the VIN won't be in the insurance databases, so it'll be next to impossible to insure.

    Colorado does not title boats, ohvs or dirt bikes. and is quite easy to get plates for home built bikes, dirt bikes, ect.

    I think it would be quite easy to title/ plate it here in Colorado.

    I have often wondered why a person could not buy a bike like that, bring it in and say that they built a bike ala OCC or one of those builders and get a plate. I would find it really, really hard to believe that a custom chopper would pass emissions.

    But impossible to insure. If you have an accident, the VIN will show it to be an illegally imported street bike. And much unpleasantness will ensue.

    I don't know, I was riding with someone today on a licensed honda dirt bike. Im pretty sure it was insured.

    Would love to hear if it's possible to bring one into Canada. I'm kind of puzzled as to why it would be for sale in Mexico but not the US or Canada. I imagine it has to do with the price they'd have to ask for it, but with the growing popularity of adventure riding, it seems like a no-brainer for Yamaha to bring the XT to North America.

    The Tenere is a KLR alternative that is even heavier than the KLR and not particularly more powerful. Some people think it is better looking. Yamaha doesn't believe the US market will pay an extra $2000 plus for a better looking KLR. So they will not spend the millions to have it certified in the US.

    This. It might be more reliable and better quality but not enough difference to go through those hoops to get one. I bet some overseas soldier has brought one back that might be for sale somewhere.
