Friends and inmates, the Tent Space is back!

I'm pleased to announce the return of the Tent Space Map. <--click here

If you use the Tent Space List or the Tent Space Maps, remember that each one of these dots represents someone willing to give up a little time of their life for you. I don't get many complaints about the Tent Space, but the number 1 complaint is travelers who ask for a place to stay and then never show up. Don't be that guy.

    TentSpaceMapUS.jpg

    TentSpaceMapEurope.jpg

There are currently just over 1000 inmates offering a place on the Tent Space, comprising 0.3% of total ADVrider membership.

If you're currently offering a place on the Tent Space, now is a good time to check out your location on the map and your Tent Space post to make sure everything is up-to-date.

If you're not currently offering a place on the Tent Space, now is a good time to sign up! You can do that on the Tent Space Sign-Up thread. Make a post and Include your location, and what you'd like to offer fellow travelers. It can be anything from a patch of grass on your lawn to a private guestroom plus dinner and drinks. What you offer is completely up to you. We do not allow commercial offers, or requests for payment.

If you currently have a Tent Space offer on the map, but you can no longer host, all you have to do is delete your existing post. Your location will be removed from the map at the next update.

If you'd like to read about all the good times people have had using Tent Space, check out the Tent Space Experiences thread.

A few acknowledgements. First, thanks go out to Tracy (mysz74) for her dedicated work putting these maps together. Thanks also go to the original Tent Space mapper, stevejonesmo.

The maps are new. If you notice any issues with the functionality of the maps, please discuss the issue in this thread so we can address the problem.

For any questions, comments, complaints, or other issues regarding the Tent Space, you can post here, or PM me directly, and I'll do my best to help.

Awesome work folks! For some odd reason, I could never see the old tent space map on my phone. Once I turned off the "bicycle trail" layer, I was able to see the inmates on this map.

    Thanksď

I can see the map, but when I click on a map pin, nothing happens (Android). What's the best way to get the pin info?

I have the same behavior on iOS. I reported this to Tracy and she said she'd look into it.

    Thanks for the report.

The Tent Space idea is awesome. And here's a "shout out" to the folks who came up with the idea and to those that make it happen. :thumb That's some serious Karma points for you all...

I'm looking forward to giving it a try later this spring.

    Thanks again!

I just reread your post and I think I misunderstood.

On my iOS device, when I open up the map, I see all the pins and when I click on one, I get an information page with a "link" to the Tent Space post. However, the link doesn't do anything. It's just a static URL display which I can't even copy/paste.

It sounds like what you're saying is that you can't even tap on the pins on your device. Does it open the map in Google Maps?

Does anyone else with an Android device have this issue?

It opens Google maps. I can click on a pin, but all it does is highlight it, showing its been clicked. Nothing else opens.

Unfortunately, Google Maps doesn't seem to be optimized for mobile devices. We had very similar issues with the old maps.

Android users tend to be luckier in this regard, which I guess isn't surprising since this is a Google product. You seem to be one of the unlucky Android users who is having troubles.

My advice is to not use the Google Maps app. See if you can paste the Tent Space Map URL directly into your mobile browser. On my iOS device, this appears to be the only way I can get it to work properly. It's a bit kludgy, but it works. If I long-press the URL and copy and paste it into the browser address bar, it opens the Google Maps website on my browser and the pins are clickable as expected. I do not have an Android device to test this on.

Perhaps other mobile users can relate their successes or troubles.

Also, Tapatalk might be part of the issue. Try it from a mobile browser.

I would like to ask others to try the map on your mobile device and report your experience. Does it work? Did it require some workarounds such as copying and pasting the URL into a browser?

I'd like to make sure the maps work as intended and that people can use them on the road.

Clicking the link opens Google maps, no pins. Android.

iOS 10.2.1 on an iPhone 6s using Chrome:

Link launches Google maps app, but no ADV icons on it (ADV does show up in sidebar - doesn't seem to do anything though)

If I launch the link intentionality in Chrome (by long-pressing and choosing to open it in a new window), it shows all icons fine and I can interact with them right in the browser. However, if I simply click on the link to the post in the interaction box at the bottom of the screen it tries to open in the Google maps APP again. If I long-press the link and open in a new browser window it works fine.

Got it to work. Had to leave taptalk and open the post from its native page. Then had to long press the link to copy, then paste into Chrome (not maps app).

Hope I remember that if/when I need the map.

    Have you considered zeemaps?

I have no issues, but I made a copy of the current map on my PC in "my maps" on Google drive.

This map overlay was then pinned to maps on my PC.

When I open the map app on my Droid Turbo 2 I have a layer that I can turn on and off even when offline that works as expected.
I will have to refresh this periodically, but it only takes a moment to do.

This may be because my phone works anyway or because of my pinned layer, I'm not sure.

You can try this yourself, from Tapatalk click on the link that will open the map in Tapatalk. Then at the top right click the three dots for the menu and share the map to your Google Drive. It should save to your "my maps" or you may have to select that folder.

Then if you open your Google Maps mobile app you should be able to ad that map Google Drive my maps folder.

Keep in mind you may have to update the map monthly if this is the way that you end up using. You can turn the map back on or off from both the terrain setting which is a clickable on the screen or from the context menu in maps.

I've shortened the link in the original post to . Hope the link won't change and this shortcut can be preserved, but don't hold your breath. It's guaranteed to work until it doesn't.

Got it working, but looking good to make it easier.
Is there a link to grab the .kml or .kmz files?
