The map files are recreated for every update by a program that can be edited to change how the list index is organized, or to break the output up into smaller map sections.

I felt the interface was more useful if people could easily just look at the map and zoom in and out to see their area of interest, rather than specifically linking to one geographical area. I'm open to changing things if there is some sort of consensus on an improved format and nobody is in a giant hurry.

I did have to go to the US/non-US format to split things up because we were over the 1000 item limit currently imposed by Google Maps.

In fact, the US entries have grown to the point that we are about to cross that barrier with just US entries. So I may need to break it down into smaller chunks anyway. I'm thinking probably East/West.

This is a great idea. I'll plan on using it and adding as I stay at spots that aren't on the list. Very cool.

    I'll second that. :clap:clap

In regard to Google Earth on the iPad 2.
It works on some tags and on others it shows a blank tab.

    Activated all layers.
    Deactivate Autotilt in Options.
Sometimes clearing History (Options) after displaying a tag
works for display of some tags.

    Not consistent.
    Continuing testing.
    It does not look promising.
It was a non starter in 1st Gen iPod Touch.
    ==============

I am experimenting with the KMZ file, which I downloaded and saved.

    Then at

    http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/extra/

    I uploaded

    artents.kmz

    =======
    I have downloaded after conversion:

    artents.csv

    artents.kml

Many other conversion formats can be selected in the upper right hand corner.

The csv file open in MS Excel.
The first 225 lines are outside the US.
I deleted those and saved the file as:
    artents-USA.csv

    Uploaded it to
    http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/extra/

    converted and downloaded

    artents-USA.kml

Stored this file at the web (box.net) but Google Maps had problems with
    the converted format.
    ===========
    Continuing in www.maps.google.com

    I pasted in the address

    http://ridetoeat.com/artents.kmz

The entire worldwide map is displayed.
    Description: 9Jul2012 AdvRider.com Tent List - from RideToEat.com
    http://tinyurl.com/cdnbsse
    ===========
    <iframe marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=http:%2F%2Fridetoeat.com%2Fartents.kmz&aq=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=37.410045,58.007813&ie=UTF8&t=m&ll=33.137551,-40.78125&spn=148.423647,298.828125&z=1&output=embed" frameborder="0" height="350" scrolling="no" width="425"></iframe>

Now I got to figure out if it is possible to save portions of it to "My Maps".
My first attempt is focused on Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

I logged into Google and opened "My Places" in Google Maps.
    Create a map
    Paste
    http://ridetoeat.com/artents.kmz

    Title: Vermont-New Hampshire-Maine
The entire artents.kmz file is imported.
Click on a Vermont Tag and save it to map created.
It appears that saving a tag from
    http://ridetoeat.com/artents.kmz
    is not possible.
One has to import it first.

I am working on the Vermont Map and using blue pins
so as to be able to distinguish between red (not saved) and blue (saved) pins.
One needs to zoom in because some red pins in the same location overlap.

I have tried to detail my progress (caveat here).

George, not sure where you're going with all this, but I'm intrigued!

A pity that google earth doesn't fully express on the ipad.

Anyway, every time the list is updated all of the data files are uploaded in both .kmz and .kml format:

    artentsUS.kml
    artentsUS.kmz
    artentsNON_US.kml
    artentsNON_US.kmz
    artents.kml
    artents.kmz

Hopefully that helps with your research.

If there is a need, I'd be willing to automatically publish them in other formats as well. See the RideToEat.com downloads page, which has various formats generated by a similar process to the one I use to generate the ARTents files.

    Hi:

Very glad you like it, I appreciate the feedback.

To add your own offer, just post it on the Tent Space Signup Thread. It will appear on the map within a few days after you add it there.

    Thanks again.

Steve has silently added a new feature to the maps which I think is fantastic. :clap

Using information from the Double Check project which aims to verify each Tent Space offer annually, Steve's maps now show the last date each Tent Space was confirmed.

It's a small but powerful piece of information which will give the user an idea of how current the offer is, and as we continue with the Double Check, almost every offer will be current.

Today we added the first entries for South Korea and Chile... also the easternmost point of North America. Cool!

    Some news and updates:

The original post has been edited to clarify some things and add the link to the signup thread.

Anyone interested in the Tent Space List map may want to follow the Double Check project. It has resulted in massive improvements to the quality of the list, deleting literally hundreds of defunct offers, confirming that several hundred more are truly current, and prompting the edits for many more where the host has moved. It's been a remarkable piece of work, architected by Jamie Z but performed by his posse of volunteers who have really knocked the rust off the list.

As Jamie mentioned a couple of posts back, the offer date displayed on the map now reflects the latest of created/modified/confirmed date - taking the "confirmed" date from the work done in the Double Check project.

A long standing problem on the map has been that in cities which have more than 1 offer, in Google Maps the display can be confusing. When you click on the icon for a city that has multiple offers, it brings up just one of the offers and you need to notice the "Next" button in the text or you might miss that there are other offers.

In Google Earth it's not a problem because when you click on the icon it "spiderfies" itself, springing out to the appropriate number of icons. Google Maps doesn't do that.

One thing I've done to reduce the confusion wherever there are multiple offers in a city is to include an n/n number indicating the number of offers, such as "Paris 1/2, France" (for the first of two offers in Paris) or "Gerlach 4/7, NV" (for the fourth of seven offers in Gerlach).

Another thing I've started working on is actually spreading out the icons in the multi-offer cities, but it will take some time to work through all the data. You can see how that works by looking at Austin Texas, where there are 8 offers.

You can look at Knoxville TN (which I haven't updated yet) to see how it works before I spread the icons out.

    Feedback welcome.
