I've had quite a few inquiries about where we're going in 2018. Many thanks to you folks for even wanting to get near us :lol3

I thought I'd start a thread about our thoughts so everyone can keep in touch in one place here on the forum...plus if anyone has any tips or travel info please feel free to post :thumb

I'm planning on heading out from my place in Western NC around the middle/end of May. Take all the small back roads out as far as Rachel NV (I wanna see some UFO's). From there I'd like to wander north through UT and ID and into MT. Enter Canada near Glacier NP and head to Dawson City for the Dust 2 Dawson event on June 21/22 (Thurs/Friday). From there it's back up to Deadhorse (weather permitting). Then...I don't have a clue other than the Denali Hwy. Got about 3 months set aside as I don't ride faster than 48 mph :-)

Princess, Tonka, and Taff will probably start with me and may split off a couple of times then rejoin. Who knows. We all learned we like to explore at different paces. All good. We know where we're going and where we'll be at the end of the day .....usually :lol3

One or two of my friends are doing the Key West to Prudhoe Bay thing and probably meeting up with us in MT. Other friends are hooking up and un-hooking with us as we scoot along. My only real date I'd like to be somewhere is Dawson City for D2D on the solstice.

I just called The Bunkhouse in Dawson City (best prices in town)....booked a twin bed room for three nights (June 20/21/22) for the Dust 2 Dawson event. If you try to book online the website says there is nothing available because the system is not active for next year yet.

Ask for Ueli or Sarah...they will treat you well :thumb:thumb

BTW I got a special rate for the event...only $198 US total for the three nights ($33 bucks each for whoever I share the room with, Taff has first dibs)

For those of you that are "iffy"...they will NOT charge your card until you checkin :thumb...they only need a card to hold the room (s).

BTW....the place has been totally renovated by the Swedish new owners :thumb

Inmate ErraticAkn said the construction going into Deadhorse is now complete...should be good next year...plus they are on schedule to start paving the last 50 miles into Deadhorse :thumb Either way it'll be a piece of cake :thumb:thumb

Here is some good info from inmate gpax....

"I became a member of LifeMed Alaska. They say they operate the only life flights in Alaska. Helicopter and fixed wing. I was flown to Anchorage in a twin engine KingAir. Membership is $49 per year. That covers the gap between your insurance and the charges for life flight. My life flight charge was $32,000. Medicare and Tricare covered $13,000. Because I was a member of LifeMed, they covered the balance and I owed nothing.

LifeMed may be worth checking into if you plan on riding in Alaska".

    Here is a link.......

    Thanks Tim
I just reserved a room myself. If anyone wants to share the room I have an extra bed.

Left Deadhorse two days ago and the construction is far from complete. However, it looks like they should have a good gravel road by the end of this season.

Are you saying that the entire road will be paved when this last 50 miles is paved?

No, there are many short sections that are paved but torn up pretty bad. The exception is the 30 miles around Coldfoot which is really nice.

After the pavement ends north of Coldfoot there is only sporadic sections that are paved. Those are the sections with the GIANT potholes that will knock your acorns off :dirtdog

The last 50 miles into Deadhorse is where the AKDOT worked the last two years to raise the roadbed 8 feet because of the flooding back in 2015 that shut the road down for a bit. It will be nice when they get that section paved as that is were most folks had trouble :muutt

I guess about 20% of the Dalton is paved...
Alcan Rider may be able to elaborate on the amount better than me...right now he's busy with a little thing from South Africa :lol3

I would love to join in and plan on doing ak next year. I usually do it in August, but to change it up, maybe June is a possibility. I take a lot of side trips so meeting in MT and then again in Dawson City would be the plan. My priority is the Dempster all the way to Tuk and the Arctic Ocean. I will also spend about a week in Homer on the spit camping on the beach...its hard for me to leave that place.

Sounds good. I know we're planning on D2D, Deadhorse, Denali, maybe some of the Demptster if the weather is perfect, and down the Kenai Peninsula for a look around.

To the best of your knowledge, are you doing the Dalton before or after D2D?

We're planning on D2D then up to Fairbanks to meet some more buddies....then up to Deadhorse. We don't really have a schedule (only D2D is locked in) and will not be making one as we have more time this trip. If we need to wait for good weather in Dawson for the run over the TOW and then wait again in Fairbanks for the run up to Deadhorse then that's the plan.

Excellent, I will tentatively plan my trip up the Dempster before D2D then after D2D tag along riding to Deadhorse.

Hey Tewster2 I have been following your travels for some time and like your style. Current plan is to head north for the fifth time next May. June of 2016 my friend hit a big pot hole near Whitehorse and bent his front wheel so we did a u turn and headed home. Our destination then was D2D so it's back on the agenda for 2018. Would like to hook up near Glacier N.P. If things fall in place. I really enjoy your practical advice and sense of humor. I have been in North Carolina twice this year and will probably ride down a couple more times as I love that area.

Are you doing Tuk right around the D2D? My plan is to do the Dempster all the way to Tuk and return in time for D2D.

Ouch! Too bad about the pothole...I tell everyone that I ride with to REALLY watch out for them. They can end a ride and possibly kill you if you're not paying attention 100% of the time...especially on the Dalton...the paved sections can be really bad because they can't (don't) grade the surface...the dirt is really nice mostly.

Here's a pothole photo that was just posted by another inmate....

    bb6a9454e0a4a2dfc26442f97a343a8f.jpg

Lots of folks want to meet up next year...all good...I don't' mind at all...but I'm not a tour guide or very intelligent :lol3 I ride pretty slow and stop often so if everyone knows where we're heading each day then all can ride at their own speed and have a great time :thumb

BTW...if you get down in my area give me a call...PM me for the number if you like.
