I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on either a ‘17 GS Rallye with the old instrument cluster and Nav VI or the ‘18 with TFT. I don’t mind paying the upcharge for TFT as long as I get the connectivity functionality that’s important to me. I am looking to be able to listen to music through BT (likely the Bose quiet control 30) using XM radio (using satellite reception and not cell signal) AND/OR music on my playlist through my iPhone. I’d like to be able to control the features such as volume and switching channels or playlists through the wiz wheel. Can this be done on the TFT or through the Nav VI, or both?

A lot of my riding is in remote areas with spotty cell coverage, so the satellite reception for XM is my preference. I’ve read the comments about issues with pairing BT devices and draining the phone battery using the TFT. Is BT pairing and listening to music easier done through the Nav VI or TFT?

    AFAIK:
    Green means ok
    Red means no go.
    I am not 100% sure but 99%.

Most of what you're asking cannot be done through the Connectivity features. That one has no support for playlist selection (or any selection at all), multiple sources, XM radio, etc. If you want more support, the Nav is the way to go and that functionality is the same on both model years.

I use the Connectivity feature as I have only music on my phone that I actually like to listen to. I also don't use much of the navigation features from it, but sometimes it comes in handy. Same for phone usage. I like having it but actually more for the TFT by itself than the connectivity features, which are so bare bones, it's a joke actually.

    Quick and dirty TFT report.

My 2018 GS with TFT is 24 hours old. I have had about 2 hrs behind the display so far. My initial thoughts follow.

The display construction is first class. It has a nice matt finish and is visible in all light conditions - it even remains legible with the sun shining directly at the display. I haven't ridden at night yet.

The menu system is intuitive - I watched a YouTube video from another owner and figured mine out quickly. However, this observation needs to be tempered with the comment that I am very used to electronic display/menu systems in general and BMW GS menus in particular.....YMMV.

The info is presented in a logical, easy to read way. I particularly like how the cruise control "ordered" speed is shown alongside the actual speed.

The suspension mode interface is done well - suspension info is displayed at the bottom of the display when you tap the suspension button. Engine mode is similarly shown at the top of the display.

The top line can be set to display as much or as little as you like. I normally leave it set on fuel tank level.

Some have remarked that you don't need the GPS if you have the TFT - I don't agree, as the GPS is very useful for displaying other values like actual speed and real time engine temp.

If I have a criticism that is that engine temp is not available for display on the status line at the top of the display - it should be one of the selections available.

I can't comment on the telephone or song functionality, as I believe that these are useful only if you wish to crash into a tree through distraction...:D

All in all, the TFT is a great improvement over the previous hard to read analogue displays.

The displayed speed is about 4-5 km/hr out vs actual GPS speed.

This is how mine is set up:

Take note. There will always be haters who pick up the tiniest bug and then it into a no-go reason.

I agree with your assessments. I have the new TFT also.

Is it possible for rider to adjust the TFT brightness levels individually for day and night modes? Or is it automatic?

I think that most gauges have too much backlighting in the night modes. At least for my eyes.

I just installed the Sena 20S Evo in my C3, and have had only a few minutes to play around with it and see how it works with the TFT screen and BMW Nav VI. The music streaming to my iPhone through the Media menu on the TFT works perfectly, as does the phone interface. I hope to check out the rest of the functions later today, and I'm really hoping I can get my Sirius XM app from my phone to stream through the system, and that the Nav VI voice guidance works ok. I don't really care if the TFT's basic Nav has voice guidance or not. I don't use any of the intercom functions, just mainly need the Sena to work for phone, music, and Nav. The Sena 20S Evo is a pretty slick piece of electronics from my brief time playing with it.

You can pick up the phone on an incoming call, you can place a call using your address book – what else do you need? The phone integration is much more sophisticated and powerful than the media player.

Play, Pause, next, previous. That's it. No other controls. No playlist selection, no browsing (not even at standstill), etc.

Can it do those functions while streaming pandora or just from library of music?

I only use library. Maybe if you kick off these apps from the phone you can then use the controls. Don't know.
