Get your attention?

I saw the Hillbilly Ride show up on the forums and checked the date. Easter weekend, damn. There is no way I can get out of family duties so I never thought about it again. Then, out of the blue, my wife asked about going to Minnesota for a figure skating judging school and spending Easter with her family in the Twin Cities. What to do, what to do? I encouraged her to attend the school; it was something she needed to do. I also expressed disappointment about not being with her on Easter. I had a fine line to walk. While discussing her plans, I mentioned how bored I would be while she was at the school and we are going to MN this summer for over a week and will be visiting her family but being apart on an family holiday would be tough. (Walking the fine line men do with their wives every day.) Over time she got comfortable with the idea of me not going.

Part one of the plan was successful. Now I had to break it to her about going to the Hillbilly Ride at the same time make sure she did not think I did not want to go to MN with her was because of the ride. I’m still walking that line. When she asked what I would do over the weekend I first mentioned I would go riding and dropped the subject. Later when asked “where” I said there is a group going to Arkansas that invited me but told them “no” because I would not be with my parents on Easter. She thought going with friends would be fun for me. I don’t do that very often. How things were changing in my favor. A few days later she asked if I thought any more about going to Arkansas. I was wondering if that was a trick question so said “no” and she said, “You should go, you would have fun but promise me you will go to mass”. I promised and started packing that night in case she changed her mind.

With the OK I get my bike in the shop. It needs new shoes, oil and valves checked. It is ready on Thursday morning. I hope to leave as close to noon as possible to get to Eureka Springs Thursday night to meet people and ride on Friday. I get out of the office later then I hoped but still got out at a decent time. I pick up my bike and start heading to Eureka. I get about 35 miles away and notice oil spots on my boots and pants, DAMN. I call the shop and they urge me to bring it back. Maybe I am getting a sign from above and need to go to MN or stay home. I did promise to go to mass while there and block off all negative thoughts.

Engles gets me right in and out. They replaced the head gasket and send me on my way. (There are mechanics I don’t trust and question everything they do but none of those types work at Engles.) The problem is it is now 4:00. I have ridden over 70 miles and not left the city. Should I go, is this a sign? My wife is leaving for MN tomorrow, I heading south.

If I got out around noon I was going to take gravel and alphabet highways to Arkansas. This late and I’m on US 71 heading south and hating it. I decide to get off that straight slab of blacktop and take my time. I"ll get to Eureka Spring tomorrow. While getting gas I call a friend in Monett, MO to see if he is available for dinner. He is, so Monett is my goal for the night. (My friend, Pete, rides a GS1150. He is the one who got me looking at the GS when I was getting back into riding.)

The KC BMW club has a scavenger hunt. One of the items we need to find is a “historic mill”. I swing by Jolly Mill to grab that item.

I knew of the mill but did not know the history.

In 1848, a whiskey distillery was built on Capps Creek in eastern Newton County, less than a mile west of the Newton/Barry county line. The village of Jollification grew up around the distillery and became a stage stop on the road from Springfield to Neosho and the Indian Territory. Except for the distillery, all or most of the town was burned during the Civil War, then rebuilt. In 1870, however, the railroad bypassed Jollification, which was ultimately more devastating than war and arson. Only the distillery -- later converted to a grist mill -- survives. Shown above, it is called Jolly Mill and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

From Jolly Mill I rode to Monett for dinner with Pete and a good night.

On ADVrider.com there is the “KC Area Photo Tag” http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=398171 and the tag has been in SW MO all winter. I was not going to be able to join any of the riders in Arkansas today so I decided to take my time and explore the roads from Monett, MO to Eureka Springs and pick up the tag along the way. The KC BMW Motorcycle Club has a scavenger hunt. I collected a number of pictures for the hunt along the way. (That is why you see my bike or parts of it in a number of pictures. That is required for the hunt.)<o:p></o:p>

I head on the first gravel road I found out of Monett going SE towards the needed photo tag. I start smelling the familiar smell of fields burning. In KS where I do so much riding in the spring they do a lot of burning of native grass to get rid of the old and add nutrients to the ground for new growth. They were doing the same in this little valley in the Ozarks.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
The smoke was so dense at time along the road I could barely see ahead. I had to creep along.<o:p></o:p> I continued down the valley along Flat Creek and came across this pretty spring and waterfall. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
It is between Purdy (Purdy was famous for not allowing dancing in the town until overturned by a Judge in 1988 and some say the basics of the movie Footloose) and Jenkins, MO.<o:p></o:p>

I ride into Branson and there was havoc in the streets. An ape escaped and was raising hell. I’m sure some county boy grabbed his squirrel gun, shot it and is at the taxidermist.<o:p></o:p>

The photo tag was also in Branson. It was the Table Rock Dam.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>
Table Rock Dam is located on the White River in Southwestern Missouri eight miles upstream and Southwest of Branson, Missouri. Table Rock Lake extends 79 miles upstream along the White River and inundates areas in Missouri and Arkansas.

Construction started in 1954 and completed in 1958.

Table Rock Dam is 6423 feet long and consists of a concrete section 1602 feet long and two earth embankment sections having a length of 4821 feet. The dam rises 252 feet above the riverbed, contains 1,230,000 cubic yards of concrete and 3,320,000 cubic yards of embankment. Four 18 foot diameter penstocks convey water to four 50,000 kilowatt generating units in the powerhouse. The first two units were ready for generation of power in June 1959, and installation of units three and four was complete in August 1961.

I head into Arkansas and the views are spectacular. I can also see rain clouds forming in the west. The weatherman said 100% chance of rain around 2:00

One of the categories of the scavenger hunt is “one room schoolhouse”. While riding to Eureka Springs I stumbled across a few. These two are only a few miles apart. Like all of rural America the population had declined dramatically. I don’t recall a home between there to schools. <o:p></o:p>

New Salem School, founded on Nov. 15, 1888

I was coming around a gravel curve and all of a sudden I see planes, old military planes, in the middle of nowhere. There was a grass runway nearby and a small hanger. <o:p></o:p>

I had to stop and look around. They were the planes of the Aviation Cadet Museum. These planes were trucked in and restored. If in the Eureka Springs area I would recommend stopping by.

I roll into town, get a late lunch and check into a motel a few doors down from the official motel. Right as I check in the rain came pouring down. It was 2:00 just as the weatherman predicted. I took a nap. I'm glad I did because I needed to be good and rested for what was in store the next day.

Around dinner time I wondered over to the official motel and tried to find some faces I recognized. David was the first ugly mug I saw and was kind enough to invite me to go with him to dinner and his gro

Here you go! A rare action shot of Ed on the big bike....... way further out in the boonies than common sense would allow.

The scene in Long Way Round where they pull the plugs and pump muddy water out of their GS kept playing on loop in my mind.

Doc kept saying "that was the worst of it" Possibly an understatement once or twice. :lol3

This is one of the more "shallow" crossings of the seven or so on the road. One was 24" for sure! :eek1

The Kings River, it is a beautiful river with wonderful smallmouth fishing. I have caught a lot of smallmouth on this river and it does not get a lot of traffic.

The previous afternoon, Possum Creek was a very enjoyable ride. I don't think I would have enjoyed it at all with that much mud.

I tried posting a pic, but it didn't work.
I try on BRTKS. It's only 81K.

While Riding Possum Creek I was told to keep an eye out for a sexy backwoods county girl. Some say she is not real.

I did not see her but I did see the old car deep be the woods. She must be real because no city girl would venture that far into the dark Ozark Mountains.

Interrupted because of Kansas youth turkey season.

This is my 10 year old nephew, George. This was his first turkey hunt. He got this bird at 7:00 PM after hunting all day. I'm proud of him for working all day for this bird. He will never forget it.

Friday afternoon and into Friday night it rained over an inch. That was on already saturated ground.

Saturday morning I met up with three Back Roads Touring Kansas Riders Backroads Link , Bob, Phil and JC. Soon arrived the indefinable Doc who would be our guide today. Doc gave a brief description of the ride he planned and review safety. There were a number of questions how muddy the roads would be and how deep the crossings would be. I think most were asked by me.

I&#8217;m a little nervous about the mud and riding in a group. Last weekend I was riding in KS and this happened.

This happened not once but 4 or 5 times and when it happens my pig likes to lie in the mud. Cleaning it out takes time. Picking it up is exhausting.

One reason I have never been on a group ride (except as the leader) is because I have always ridden alone and not sure how my skills would match up with other riders (on more nimble bikes). I did not want to be the one frustrating all the other riders so I stayed away. This was going to be my first ride where I was not in control of where we were going and at what speed. This was another reason I had butterflies in my stomach when we left the motel grounds and the City of Eureka Springs. By default, I ended up riding sweep.

We are off on a quick pace heading south. Considering all the rain the roads are in remarkably good shape. If this is what the roads are like all day all I have to worry about is deep water crossings.

Our first stop is along the Kings River. The water is a little high and slightly stained because of the rain. I&#8217;m surprised it was not higher.

I have fished this river in the past for smallmouth and had some good luck. Today would have been a nice day to canoe this river but a better day to ride.

We continued to ride at a brisk clip south easterly and stopped at a local Folk Artists place.

There were sculptures like those all over the property. We were welcome to take photos along the road but not to go on the property. That was disappointing.

We continue SE on beautiful county roads. The scenery gets prettier with each bend.

We start heading down a road that starts off very easily however, that changes quickly. The road get muddy at spots and the crossings are getting deeper and deeper.

get. I&#8217;m on a GSA ADV. The snorkel is not very high on this bike. When the rider before me goes through a short but extremely deep crossing I know the water is higher than the air intake. For a moment I consider stopping, instead I hit the crossing with some speed and part the water with my front wheel and get through. Shortly the crossing we stop for a break at a beautiful waterfall on Possum Creek and we were on Possum Creek Road.

While resting I tell everyone, that I can&#8217;t go in water any deeper. Doc assured us we were thought the worst part. That was not the first time we heard that from Doc and would not be the last.
