You're probably right. I'm not too knowledgable about the older engine configurations. With the shape I assumed a turbocharger.

I'd say the more Willy Wonka it looks the better. Those damn new car motors look like they're all one part. Fancy covers and all... ugly in it's boredom. :puke1

Still, I think I know the one you were refering to, and if it's the one I read about in the Lotus 7 replica chassis, that is one VERY bad motor!

I think I saw the engine at a bike show once, very small & thinking about it, the gearbox was unit construction, not bolted on. Very compact, would easily fit in to a bike :eek1

I'm sure I've read that someone somewhere is doing the same with two Hayabusa top ends?

There is a kit car manufacturer in the UK that sells a Caterham/Lotus 7 style car with a ZX12 engine front AND rear, rumoured to put out 350-400bhp & weigh bugger all :eek1 :eek1 :eek1

IIRC, (I'll try and dig up the article in my compost, err' archive)

It was two R1 engines combined into a V-8, derated 4000 rpm for traction and driveability issues. I think it started at around 16,000rpm but they were turning 12,000 and still making tons of hp.

PS: Why do I love Lotus 7's, Z3 Coupes, Elise's, etc. so, at 6'4" it's just torture to lust after such cars.

This is a most excellent thread, so I wanted to contribute something.

Someone posted some turbine rotors earlier, this is a picture of one of the steam turbine rotors I've worked on, just so I can say "mine's bigger than yours." :D

Also, someone posted a picture of the Ducati Supermono. Here is a picture of a Supermono engine cut-away. I took this in the Ducati Museum at the factory in Bologna two week ago. It is interesting how they removed the rear cyclinder but kept the rod, I assume to maintain balance. They fitted a rocker to hold the small end of the rear connecting rod.

Thanks for the great thread. Keep 'em coming.

:umph a bosch mechanically injected 917 engine (i believe). that was the engine that brought on the first restriction rules in racing... that think made insane power (like a couple thousand hp), and the car weighed something like 1500 lbs... turned into a plane and killed a few folk.

fuck politics in racing. people die.

if I remember right, they wanted to have a perfectly balanced single..
    hence the extra rod.

    10k redline.. 75 hp single.
    Yum.
