Hey Marc, Should be several pics you recognize. see you in a couple.
I start the day by NOT remembering THE special day until I'm reminded
much later in the day. oh oh dog house time.
We're up early today, 0400, to get down to the car deck and ride out.
This is Roy and Dorothy from LA on the nice Wing! We trade places
on the road several times on the ride from Prince Rupert to Prince George
Then its hurry and up and get in line for Canadian Customs.
We leave Rupert in the dark so no pictures and to top it off there was a
very thick blanket of fog for many miles also making picture taking hard.
not to mention seeing and riding...
Finally we break out of the fog into glorious sunshine!
and it gets Hot for us cold Alaskans! Way up to 75F!
We stop several times to remove layers. Wonderful.
It was a nice ride to Prince George. The first 50 miles or so out of Rupert
are really the best for scenery, if its not cloudy and foggy. Someday I hope
to see it... The road winds along the Skeena river for a long time with
towering mountains to your side. Even in the dense fog its beautiful.
We rode through Prince George and turned south onto 97.
The sun is setting.
We rolled in Quesnal to stay the night. Today's stats. 523 miles. Long day
for us especially since we got up early.
tomorrow we ride Hells' Canyon! good night.

Okay, what's the story of the little guy stuck in your oil cooler grille???
Also, how are the bikes for this type of travel? I recently picked up a 2006 K12GT and really like it but all I have done so far is ride to work. i cannot wait until I can get it out on the open highway!

that's the Tick , he used to travel on the antenna mast on my 93 LT,
he's always grinning and usually has bugs in his teeth.
As to how are these bikes for this type of travel? I got the GT specifically
for long distance travel , used it for commute too. It has taken an
Aeroflow windscreen, Suburban bar risers, and Russell saddle to get the
ergos to fit me. The LT was a very good LD tourer too, though it
had its faults. I'm a horsepower junky, there's no replacement for
displacement and no such thing as too much HP! I'll quote you:
"the growl the bike makes while accellerating in 6th gear at about 75 MPH and higher is completely intoxicating."
I rode the GT on a Alaska Yukon ride last summer, story here,
including 150 miles of dirt and gravel and it handled quite well.
Cee will have to speak about the Norge, but so far she is enjoying it
and can keep up with me in the twisties and quick passes which she
wasn't comfortable with on her '95 R100RT. The Norge is a blast to
ride, lots less HP but still quick and very nimble feeling. Of course now
both bikes are in tour-pig mode, heavy with gear, so parking lot
maneuvers are a strain. We are very careful about where we park.
I would be reluctant to ride anything heavier.
I remember the horrifying scenes on TV from 10 years ago
We stayed at the Travlodge in Quesnel BC (pronounced que-nel) at the
recommendation of another ADVer. Nice room, wifi, breakfast, and the
total was $93 CDN.
The morning starts with the usual ritual, packing, loading, tying down,
clean windshields, and check tire pressures. We get on the road around
9am to 50-something temps. I'm wearing the gerbing but not plugged in.
I imagine it means MPH. but not for long
Pre-building big log homes/buildings, now thats a proper crane.
A friendly wave from a fellow biker. We got waves from nearly all bikers
except for a few pirates.
I must say that BC folks are very friendly, at most stops local people
would start a conversation and wanted to know where we were from and
going; with one exception of a young girl at the cash register at the gas
station at the corner of 16 Yellowknife Hwy and 37 Cassiar Hwy who
was more than a little rude.:eek1

I was intrigued by all the big boulders along the road.
Its starting to get hot for us, 84F, and we stop to take off a layer.

Yikes. Its up to 94F. Thats way hot for us. We take off remaining layers.
The scenery coming into Fraser River canyon is fantastic.
We stopped here for one of many shade breaks, but did not ride the tram
to the bottom of the canyon. Someday.

We leave the canyon and eventually get to the border crossing at Sumas WA.

We do get momentarily lost, but give in and turn on GPS. Yep.

We arrive at my brother's house, fortunately Cee leads the way as I
would have gotten us lost again. But when she steps off her bike I see
her eyes are strangely glowing.
Brother Ralph moves his wife Gloria's car out of the garage for us to park
in, but his Triumph TR6 (new body and paint work) stays in...

Well thats wraps day 6. Day 7 (today), 8 and 9 will be rest and
maintenance days, wash clothes, fix some little things and see family.
Norge goes to dealer for its first checkup although we did most of the 600
mile fluid changes as there is no Guzzi dealer in AK now. We bought the
Norge from Moto I here in Seattle. The owner Dave, is great to work with.
And I'm stopping in Ride West BMW to visit a friend and see about getting
my TPS working again.

The road will be fixed by Oct 1st(they say).Tourists are allowed to visit the southern end of Hatteras Island after the 15th of Sept..It is a good loop down the coast to catch the Ocracoke ferry & then the Swanquarter or Cedar Island ferry.Maybe I'll see you then.Keep up the great report!
Day 7 was a rest day, didn't do much. Sleep.

Day 8 - First thing on the agenda was take the Norge to the dealer for
its first maintenance visit since new.
This is a cool place, only three stalls and everyone is working hard but still
time for a smile or a Hi, where you from.

liked to have heard that roar.

And we come back at noon as requested, Cee's bike is out front and
ready to go. Check out gives clean bill of health. Pick up a few supplies
and we are on out the door. Reasonable bill too.
We stop by the local BMW dealer to see about a trouble light that
developed on the way down, related to Tire Pressure Monitoring
System, but an appointment is two weeks out. No joy. Was hoping
to get a diag read to see if prob is clearable or needs new sensors.
Both sensors stopped reporting within a day of each other. I'll call
ahead to Denver BMW dealer and see if they can help. We'll be
there in a week. I'm also doing tire change there so if sensors need
to be replaced that would be a good time. At least turn the dam
trouble light off. I still rely on a manual tire pressure check every AM.
We ride back to my brothers house and start making dinner.
Tomorrow we re-sort gear, drop stuff we really don't need and
load for ride out on Thursday morning up Stephens Pass on 2.

FYI, Foothills BMW is the closest dealer (to me at least) here in Denver. I'm pretty sure they have a service department too. It's where I've picked up a few parts for my beemer. They have a website something like www.foothillsbmw.com if you want to check them out. Say "Hi" to Ralph for us! And tell him he should come out here so we can go to that amazing steakhouse again with him! See you soon.

Day 9 was repack and drop a few items to stay at my brother's place
that we didn't really need or hopefully won't need later.
We went out to dinner and came home to talk but, guess we had said it all.
Day 10 we left Woodinville, but first let's take time to smell the flowers
Let it never be said that I didn't take time to smell (or take a pic of) the flowers.
As we roll past Monroe on US 2 we see the skies aren't too inviting

The temps are in the mid 40's here
and then we descend into Tumwater Canyon. Lots of twisties but traffic
and construction keep the speed down. We don't see a lot of water in
the river either.
I follow Cee through most of the canyon, and as we go through a one
lane construction zone with the river to our right and the mountain cliff
to our left a large boulder, the size of a watermelon, comes tumbling
down just as Cee gets there, she slows not knowing which way its going,
then stops just as the boulder rolls to a stop at her left foot.
WOW. that was close.
Then I look up and the construction workers are using air hammers to
break away the cliff. There's no catch net below them. WTF are they
thinking? I'm pretty steamed but we roll on. anyone work for WSDOT?
I try not to think what would have happened if Cee had hit it or it had
We stop in Leavenworth for a break and lunch. Thoughts of near disaster
melt away in the pleasant atmosphere of this little town.
The terrain changes dramatically as we approach Wenatchee and the
Columbia River valley. As we come into town I'm looking for the highway
that crosses the river and manage to miss it. Annoying since I think I did
the same thing one time before.

We get our new face shields in Seattle, they are mirror coated and
although a bit goofy or maybe too cool for us oldsters, they really help
keep helmet temps down and reduce eye fatigue. I've tried switching
back and forth on sunny days and the difference is quite noticeable.
We carry clear shields for cloudy or evening ride.
Cee's brother is working at this dam but we are unable to contact him
oh, by the way, thanks to Hayduchesslives for this decal on Cee's helmet!

This is a part of eastern Washington I've never seen.

docks are sitting on dry ground.
Then we cross miles and miles of plains and hay fields. amber waves of grain?

We stop in Coeur D'Alene for the evening. today's stats. Tomorrow Bozeman.
Day 11 - we're up early (well earlier) so we can be on the road by 0800.
The weather prediction for today's race down I90 to Bozeman is a mix of
sun, warm, cold, and rain and in various order. So we dress for warm
knowing there will be times when we're overdressed.

We've crossed into Montana
first of several breaks, I stop about every 50 to 80 miles and our fuel stops are every 170 to 200 miles.

the weather forecast for Bozeman was rain and as we draw near it appears the forecast will be correct
An hour later we arrive on the Montana State campus where our son and
his wife are students.

Day 12 and Day 13 are no miles. In fact I arrived in Bozeman feeling a bit
under the weather and spend most of Saturday sleeping. Much better

comfortable on the MSU campus staying with our son and his wife in
their campus housing.

Tomorrow morning we ride south to Yellowstone Park. One of my favorite places. More to come.
We had our "Last Ride" yesterday. About 30 folks turned out. Sunny and 60 degrees. You guys were the topic of much of the discussion. Stay safe.

Great! maybe there will be several "last rides," that's certainly one of the
better weather days for a Sept ride. Glad we could provide fodder for
conversation I'm guessing envy was the tone?
Brother is engineer, wife is teacher.
BTW, Montana is a beautiful place, you're gonna love it there.
Monday, we awake to nice weather in Bozeman and start getting
stuff back into bags to hit the road. Its already in the low 60's while we
are packing up. Love that.
Rolling down I90 toward Livingston where we will exit onto 89
And on to Yellowstone Park
Mobile Home? Montana Sized RV?
And then something happens on the drive down 89 to Gardiner and the
entrance to Yellowstone. The speed limit is 70 but I'm only doing 60.
Gasp. This is unlike me. I'm enjoying the slower pace and begin to think
60 is too fast. Yikes. I need an intervention!
I mention this to Cee and she rolls her eyes, of course we should slow
down and enjoy the time she says.
We gas up and get some food in Gardiner MT and then go into the park

There are elk everywhere here. The Park staff have their hands full trying
to keep tourists from getting too close to the animals.
We drive past all this and find a quieter place off the road to stop and eat
lunch by a creek. The Alaska plates become a draw and pretty soon a
small crowd forms, some wanting their pictures next to the Alaska bikes. :huh
But its all fun and we enjoy conversation with many.
Today is a roll through Yellowstone and we don't stop at all the turnoffs to
attractions since we've been here before, except Old Faithful.
It was as much fun to watch all the poeple
run to the geyser when it went off, especially a tour bus that stopped
next to us, they poured out of the bus on a dead run to the geyser.
