There is a rumour that bikes and equipment may not be back from the Dakar in time to get everything ready and shipped to Abu Dhabi in time for the first rally of the new season?

They brought the ADDC forward a week presumably to give a full 2 weeks between Abu Dhabi and Qatar, as because of the political issues with Qatar it will not be possible to move the equipment directly there from the UAE or by road via Saudi - it will have to go through Oman, Kuwait or even back through Europe!!

This may obviously put paid to some teams competing in both events also.

I’d argue a Dakar racer in Australia will never get the credit you think it deserves as we are not a nation of rev heads. The west in general is declining in Mottorsports while 2nd and 3rd tier countries take up the slack.

Where Dakar is having some cross over is adv riding which is booming. And ktm will make a motza as they develop bikes off back of Dakar tech and testing.

Tbh I don’t want my kids racing dirt bikes professionally. I want them to ride but have a career with less injuries to earnings [emoji106]

Australian Swimming just doesn’t have any rock stars and too many shit swimmers to dollars.

Last summer (complicated) Saudi, the UAE, Bahrain & Egypt cut all diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar, so direct travel there from the UAE is currently impossible.

No rumour! Dakar started later than usual and, as you say, DC is a week earlier so there's no chance of getting the stuff through in time. Alternative is to fly stuff down, why IMHO is not more expensive than sea freight if you consider the costs of driving to the ports, etc.
I'm working on getting some bikes down there, also for Qatar. They will probably have to do an unnecessary detour through Oman...

Yep detour via Oman - by road there and by air to Qatar - paperwork will be interesting as it will probably have to be 2 totally separate shipments.

Thanks Bill and huge props for your Dakar finish. Does he expect a full recovery? Is there spinal cord damage? Thanks for any info you can share...

I wonder if this goes some way to answering the question of "what will Seb Loeb do now pug has pulled out of Dakar?"

Perhaps the official factory effort has handed the keys to PH Sport and next yeah Red Bull money will fund their privateer campaign with Seb at the wheel?

Good opportunity for TPies and Meo to get a taste of the four wheeled life. Its funny just how far a mullet and a big smile will et you!

Wow - what’s this all about?

    ||| " after having been a pilot of the dakar and winning it five times, I leave the functions of Sports Director of #dakarrally | it has been wonderful to be able to find out behind the scenes, to know what is behind its imposing scenery and the amazing gear that It forms the organization of this event out of the ordinary. Being in the heart of the rally for three years, in contact with dedicated and highly professional specialists, has taught me to appreciate the commitment shown by all the organization's teams in this unique event in the world. I can only hope that the dakar will continue to make us enjoy and dream for many more years " ||
