Where did you find a 6.34 gallon tank?
came stock on my '02 XX
most I ever put in it was 5.9 gallons and the gauge was blinking for 30 or so miles. (was riding the entire VA section of the BRP and in search of a gas station).
Honda also made 2 bikes with a 5 yr warranty. The wing and XX
I just looked it up and I have the same tank. I found the info in a Haynes manual that I have and I misread the data where it displays 5.3 Imp gal and for some reason skipped where is says 6.3 gal. Who in the hell uses imperial gallons as a unit of measure anyhow. It's either liters or gallons.
But dude, I'm not getting the mileage as you're getting, perhaps I should slow down.
Whats an imperial gallon? sounds too fancy smancy for me..
I am pretty easy on the XX.. Usually hit 45 - 55ish in first and then just keep clunking along gears to reach desired speed.
PC is tuned for normal riding unless I ask for it.. You put me in the mountains and I enjoy throwing the ole girl around and rarely will she come below 6k rpms for extented periods. Like mentioned I have filled up and at 120 miles later she is blinking at me to be in search of fuel. I even try to keep fuel levels down if i can to keep all the fuel weight down and don't have so much bike to throw around.
I am getting old and top speed doesn't impress me anymore. Bet I haven't been over 160mph in 6 yrs or more. Throw a corner at me and watch me grin ear to ear though. She just got broken with 33k miles on the clock.

I've been keeping my eyes open for a sport-tourer in the 3k-4k range, and the XX is intriguing. I found (a way overpriced) one at a dealership just to test sit, and I was surprised at the seat-to-peg ratio (more generous than I had remembered) and the weight (not as pig heavy as I expected; it's no top heavy beast like an 1150GS Adv ). The reach to the bars would kill me; I would definitely want risers.
I didn't have the opportunity to ask for a test ride, but may if I get more serious.
It stays on my list.
Although the bike is no longer in production you can still get the racks and hard bags to turn it into a sport-tour in no time at all. I've been thinking about upgrading my Givi bags to a larger set and have been looking around, I was a bit suprised to see that there are items still availble online.
So the low fuel light blinks?
I rode mine, trying to gauge max distance, on my last trip to about 210 miles max. Only put in 4.9 gallons. Haynes manual says a 2000 Bird had a 6.3 gallon tank. It lit up the low fuel light at around 160 miles every tank full. my average mileage was around 39/ 40 mpg or so, had no idea the size of the reserve/ how far I could actually go out of a tank. Never saw a blinking light, guess I didn't need to feel so anxious after all...
The first segment on the LCD gauge blinks when it gets low. For me, this is usually around 160-180 miles and I fill up with 4.5 to 5 gal. When I check, it's 36-38mpg so I have a max range of 50-60 miles once it starts blinking.
What Cplus said... first segment blinks at you. Not really a light.
I normally loose the first bar at around 90 - 100 miles after filling up riding normal. Once that first piece goes away they begin to click away fast.
going to WV last month, saddlebags, tankbag, little extra gear tied on, my 230lb butt and 80 - 83mph slabbing and little playing.. 43 mpg really impressed me. Buddy on his ZX7R got just over 50mpg with bags and crap..
be amazing to see what non ethanol gas would have given us.
Therein lies the difference. My bird is a 2000 with the analog dash. Thats prolly why mine hasn't blinked at me.
low-tech yet aerodynamic luggage option...
Big fan of penny-tech, never understood why people bother with expensive hard luggage that adds more (perminent) weight (in mounting racks/hardwear) to their bikes... and hard luggage don't even carry much more weight capacity.. XX is heavy enough to begin with.

just picked up this 02 with 1300 miles on it from the original owner today.
i'll never understand how someone can have a bike for 10 years and ride it that rarely...especially a bird
mine had 13k when i found it in January and looked as if it had never seen rain. it doesn't look like that anymore

the tires look new and the compound is still soft. think they will be okay for a bit under three digit speeds.
That is a damn clean looking bike compared to mine, I've got bug splatter, dirt and sand from this past weekend's ride on Hwy 90 to view the aftermath the hurricane Isaac. Found a boat on the same road I was travelling on:
Then further down at the state line for LA/MS the bridge was open for about an hour to let the yachts and fishing boats back out. Then the bridge broke and I had to turn around. Found myself hanging out with a couple of BWM riders going the same direction as myself:
The XX in its element, coming back from a 8 hr, 350 mile, romp through the Catskill Mountains.
