    I acquired an '06 Piaggio Fly 150 this summer. A trade that cost me out of pocket little more than registration, tax and insurance yielded a decent scoot to play with.

    With just under 14,000 miles on it, the thoughts of "hopping" the Fly up came easily.
    The itch to molest it and see if a bit more giddy up could be found needed to be scratched.
    The plan.....
    Establish base performance as stock.
    Install upgrade variator. Record results.
    Install a PM Tuning pipe. Record results.
    Install 200cc Piaggio jug (used on the Liberty 200). Record results.
    Rejet, tune variator if needed. Again, record results.

    The goal....
    Quicker acceleration with stronger pull up to original top speed of 60-62mph.
    More top speed is not really what we want to gain, but any extra mph will not be refused. Just more "OOMPH".
    An up gear might be in the future, but first things first.

    Let the "BlowFly" project begin!

    While you are in the case, change out the torque spring; probably a new belt would be warranted with that many miles, too. That should give you a reliable base to work from.

    Was thinking about doing something similar with an '08 Vino 125, but found there aren't many performance parts available for it. Can't even find a pipe for it.

    Here is where we are starting.
    I replaced worn rollers with stock OEM 10g rollers. Replaced the belt (old one was still in spec), mounted a new rear tire. The clutch pads had plenty of meat so I cleaned them and freshened the inside of the clutch bell. The condition of the spring was unknown.
    In Florida, on the flats, I was able to coax what appeared to be an honest 60-61(indicated 66-67)mph. The work and testing is in North Carolina at about 2000 ft. Not sure how much that would make a difference.
    My friend YellowJacket has taken the lead on the wrenching and has done some test runs while I was busy with some Doctor's visits..
    He has been drag racing motorcycles for 45 years and is a dedicated tuning junkie. Great to have his skills and knowledge on the project.:freaky

    Forde, I have followed several threads featuring the PM pipe for the Piaggio Leader engines on the MV forum. Most were indeed from your side of the "pond".
    They are pricey. I thought they were out of my reach till I found a good deal (under $300 delivered)from an outfit in Charleston SC.:deal Glad I snagged it when I did as the few he had are gone. Another supplier asks $490 plus shipping.:eek1
    Here's hoping this part of the equation will yield reasonable improvement.

    Here are some results.
    Vic has a spot near his home where the road is straight and fairly level (a lot to ask for where we live in the mountains :lol3) and little traffic to interfere with making timed runs. He has used it to test many of his scooters and motorcycles and has the routine down. This stretch of road is about 110-120 yards. Keep in mind this is not official track distances, simply a way to quantify what changes in run time come from our tinkering.
    The process:
    8 timed runs from full stop and WOT(stopwatch). Throw out the best and the worst and average the remaining 6 times.
    Top speed: On a longer stretch of road, WOT till it gives no more (GPS). Both ways.

    Stock: Stock variator with 10g rollers.=60 gms All else stock.
    Average 10.51 sec. Runs were very consistent.
    Top speed: Average 57 both ways.

    Malossi Multivar: 3x9.5gm rollers, 3x14gm rollers =70.5gm New clutch main spring.
    Average: 10.25 sec. Runs were very consistent.
    Top speed: Average 55.5 both ways. Strong cross wind may have slowed things down 1-2 mph.

    Vic weighs about 20 lbs more which could account for the difference in top end he found compared to my runs earlier in Florida.
    The Multivar comes with two sets of rollers. 9.5's and 14's. I would expect quicker times might have been seen at the expense of top end with all 9.5gm rollers. Mixing the weights with a net heavier weight did yield small but consistently lower times. This mix was suggested anticipating an increase in torque and hp when the pipe and 200 jug go on.

    The new variator was not part of the original tuning plan. When replacing the worn stock weights we found the outer driving pulley had almost no teeth to engage the drive shaft splines!:eek1 The inner cover was nearly as bad. That piece and the thick spacer on the outside were carrying the bulk of the torque. That was a stranding on the side of the road waiting to happen.:baldy

    No testing today, bike stayed in the basement. We had a high temp of 35* today. Not going to get much better for at least 6 days.

    If I were still in Maine, the bikes would be tucked in the basement for a long sleep. Of course their slumber would be occasionally interrupted when I would get on them and make "Vrroom Vrroom" sounds.:D
    Pipe is on. The Fly is making its own "Vroom, Vroom". A little "barky", but not bad. Weather permitting some runs might be made Friday.

    Here's a shot of the exhaust on the bike. Whether or not it helps performance remains to be see. I like the looks of it, that anodized, CNC'ed alumimun bracket looks neat. That pigtail in the exhaust pipe may actually be of some good. It's been my experiance on bikes that cannot be held in one gear, like a CVT, a long headpipe helps low end power.
    High of about 42* and steady rain all day so still no testing. Tomorrow will be worse and Thu. is tied up with turkey day. Fri. will be cold but dry so might get in some testing then.

    Hi Driller,

    It's me DucatiSS (ADV sign in rules said no bike brands). Thanks for the link. You and Yellow Jacket are doing great work. I was going to do the install myself, but the wife wanted her Fly back today so we could bring it with us to Pensacola. She has known me for thirty years and was justifiably concerned that it wouldn't be ready if I was doing the work. The guys at the shop had a blast with the scoot. They said no one ever does much to these and were very impressed. They also noted that the 2006 Marino Blue scooters were the last Piaggios made in Italy and they like the build quality better than the Chinese ones from 2007-2012. This looks like a great site, thanks again. I didn't get a hold of the mechanic that did the jetting, but I know it is richer. I let you know when we get the exact numbers.

    Hey, I've got some numbers!!.
    With the pipe installed and no other changes, the times at my top secret test facility dropped to 9.975 sec. an improvement of just over .25 sec. Two way top speed by GPS and a windless day was 58 MPH, again an improvement of 2.5 MPH.
    It occurred to me that say you were going to be in a big money drag race and needed all the edge possible, would it help to drop rear tire air pressure way down, effectively lowering gearing slightly? Sorry to say, that didn't work. With 10# in the tire, I actually lost a little ET. Lower tire pressure also means more rolling resistance. In this case, resistance won out.
    The exhaust did result in some weight loss. I forgot to weigh it before installing but will do that when Driller and I install the big bore kit. The difference is probably no more that 5 pounds.
    Weather permitting, my next step is to install all 9.5 gram rollers and do the testing.
