I was sent to the far South of NZ to cover the Burt Munro festival for Kiwi Rider Magazine. A weekend celebrating the life and times of the Worlds Fastest Indian man. Beach racing, street racing, track racing, speedway and numerous other events staged in and around Invercargill. And I jagged the keys to the city. First stop was the Southland Museum and the Munro exhibit where there are various original Munro bikes and replicas used in the film on display. We were shown the movie replicas in the back room of the museum (cross 'go into the back rooms of a museum' off the list). They were ducatis and hopkins couldn't fit on them with the motors in place - top pic. then we watched a doco on the bloke. He was an even bigger character than the movie portrays with a thicker Southern (NZ) accent than the fictional. Then we went to a big hardware store in town - where the original 'specials' are held behind an intricate security system of red string. There was a steady stream of motorcyclists paying homage. Then before we went to the beach racing we visited an amazing truck museum. More Southern man mechanical genius. Pics to follow.
