205'd: Speaking of MotoLab, there he is now.

Thanks. :beer It's a weak spot on the DR and many guys don't even know it's in there. I should mention it more often. :getiton

I don't like the K&N replacements. MotoLab has one by UNI that may be suitable, but I've never seen one up close. Since Rusty's idea works so well, I've never looked any further.

Derek mentions the UP-123 may have less resistance than the filter used in my link. The filter we're talking about flows all the air under the slide diaphragm, as the slide rises and falls. If you're an aggressive rider, your slide is going up-n-down a LOT, moving a bunch of air and resistance will matter. I'm retired and don't care to get hurt (again), so I'm very smooth on the throttle; my slide doesn't need a high air flow capacity. Your choice and now you have a little more information. :freaky

The filtering medium on the K&N isn't dense enough for dusty conditions.
The filter medium on the UNI is denser, but it should still be oiled.
I've been wondering if the lack of surface area makes this more restrictive than the UNI. If it does, it might damp the slide movement some, contributing to the minimal wear on your slide guide. How many miles ago did you perform the modification?

    Regards,

    Derek

Surface area is certainly compromised. I'd never thought about the slide being damped. :hmmmmm I'd estimate that I installed the filter about 35k miles ago.

And I just happen to have a sheet of UNI kicking around from a previous project. :D

That would work great for the Rusty Rocket mod, but the UP-123 is:

I just had to fix mine and what finally got it back in alignment was loosening the nuts under the bar rubbers, I also loosened the bars, wiggled it all around and when tightened back up all was good. First time I tried this I don't think I wiggled it around enough after I loosened it all.

Does anybody know of a source for OEM electrical connectors? I got a the smaller blinker/horn/lights switch cluster and I would like to convert it to the OEM connector in case I want to go back to the bar mounted choke.

Caused by my helmet as it hit the ground. Big tender spot on my cheekbone and brow also and had to straighten my eyeglasses a lot.

    BTW: I'm retired also.

If I could just get Briggs and Stratton to sell me the punch outs, I could have a small business opportunity

hehe. That reminds me of my time in the wet clutch industry. Punch out rings of paper and punch out rings of steel and you create a lot of waste. However the clutches made from a bunch of little segments or jigsaw pieces cannot give an adequate life span or handle the power.

Yeouch, glad it's just a bruise. :huh

I'm safe, I can't drink Kool-Aid :bert, I'm not tall enough to ride a bike with a real suspension. :2cry Of my DR's many naps, only two happened when the bike was actually moving. :uhoh

Ahhhhh, the good life. :D The weather is going to crash pretty soon though, dangit. :vardy
