After the success of the 2012 Spring RedNEK rendezvous, we'll do a fall one.

It will be September 28-29-30 to avoid conflict with another Vermont ADV event.

    Spring thread here: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=776085

I got a very enthusiastic call this morning from Big E, who enjoyed riding with you FFs a lot. He's proposing an extended two-day small-bike run with primitive camping Saturday night at an undisclosed location in northern VT. We are still working out the details, but the format would be to ride to the campsite in the morning, drop gear, then go beat yourselves bloody. Camping in the evening would be followed by more trails, then a ride-out around noon Sunday.

The big DS loop could follow this spring's format and return to base Saturday night, or could follow the small-bike format. In this case, the big bikes would likely head out toward Maine where there are several excellent campsites I am aware of. We would join up with the road riders in Maine Saturday evening.

The road loop would again be a self-guided, rip at your own pace affair. I'd again provide several options. There is an excellent route through Quebec into Maine for those of you with passports and the desire to use them.

Ok, here's the rider list, which I hope to keep updated as things go along. There will again be three categories.

Small bikes: 450cc and under dual sports or plated dirt bikes. Must be street legal and capable of at least 50 mph on gravel. Should have softer compound knobbies/trials tires. Vermont does not, so far as I'm aware, require DOT tires. Big E is mounting a trials tire. Y'all might be in trouble. This is technical trail riding, so have your sprockets geared accordingly. You can bring a bigger bike if you have the stones, but be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Sorry, the small bike run will be back spring 2013.

Big DS Bikes, 450cc and over. Be tanked for at least 100 miles between fuel stops, preferably at least twice that. I'll be riding the Fuel Bus, which has 320 miles in the main tank, and can carry 4.5 gallons in side cans. Hopefully the Bus won't need to be that heavy. We're willing to accept much smaller bikes if the rider wants a less technical ride. Be capable of carrying at least overnight gear and maintaining a sustained speed of 60 mph on pavement/clean gravel through hilly country. I can think of one XT225 rider that may want in on this. Ride what tires you want, although strongly road-biased tires will be a disadvantage.

Screw it I'm IN. I will touch base with Big E as time gets closer to insure that my turtle like speed won't be a hindurance. Should have knobbier tires by then, and maybe I can talk Big E into letting me chase him threw the woods a few times in preperation.

Hell, Reb, we Carpetbaggers intend to whip you into shape. You're only an hour away. PM me and I'll send you Big E's telephone. We sparked his taste for riding a lot more this summer.

I'll try to make it up again for the Fall version. It's a little early for me to commit to anything but if I'm available I'll be there!

I'm not sure if I'd haul up the DRZ400 or ride up on the F650. The big bike ride was great however that trail ride looked like a lot of fun as well! I would prefer to ride up but I also want to hit some more off road type terrain. I would love to see a bit more off road option that would be rough but doable on the bigger bikes. Maybe a short (a few hours) ride Sunday morning that's more dual track type stuff? Optional hero sections on the main big bike ride? etc..

Whatever happens I hope to be there!

Al, If you want to split the gas with me, I could get two bikes into the back of the truck. Otherwise, I can't justify taking that gas guzzeling pig to Canada and back.

I'm in! Sounds like a blast. Don't know any of you, but what the hell? Hmm, take the wife's xt on the small route, or my DR on the big route? Guess I'll have to wait and see if the wife wants to go too...?

It sure is a long way but worth it. I should be able to tow at least one more bike and would be making a straight north run from NYC if anyone is along my route..

I'm appointing inmate WAP as the Road Hodidomeister for the Fall RedNEK road ride. He's Polish like me and sympathetic to the cause of flat, indefensible countries with good food. Besides he designed the parachutes for the Mars lander, so if you need a dissertation on variable (soft) aerodynamics, he's your huckleberry. He has a sporty bike that naps occasionally, and is good company.

Here's one option: The Pure Vermont Pegscraper:

This one weaves across the spine of the Greens and will test all you have if you ride it hard. Good food, gas and scenery all along the way. 275 miles all up, which is a damned good day if you stop and pull out the camera out. (You'll want to pull the camera out.) Durn pretty. As before, send me a PM with your email and I'll send the GPS tracks. I don't care if you're going on our ride or not, you won't wear the road out. The tracks are available to all.

As long as I am back from my western US trip by then.

And if you all knew what is good for you would all be " in" also.

Awesome. WAP and I are actually quite well set up for in flight photography. Stopping is completely optional. Geez, I shot an entire movie one handed riding my displaced Katana. I had one hand on the throttle and one hand on the camera. It's not the fastest video, but bear with it, it doesn't totally suck either.

    In her street clothes...

    Full dualsport effect...

Remember, the WHOLE video was shot one hand on the bars and one holding the camera. I get on the throttle pretty good at the 4 minute mark.

Easy single track (ish) at 6:50, but the camera is a little out of focus. Still impressive for only one hand on the bars.

As this road route wasn't completed due to financial difficulties (WAP lost his wallet), it will be a possibility also. If the big DS bikes and the road riders meet Saturday, it will be on part of this loop near Wilsons Mills, Maine. This is not as all-up twisty as the Pegscraper, but will not disappoint. It crosses the Appalachian Trail at two points, goes through several major notches, and offers some of the wildest country available in the east. About 300 miles if you run both segments.

Click the pic. It's Picasa. Photobucket was being a pain.

This is another road run that meets up at a campground in Maine. It presents some of the best pavement riding I know of in NH and Maine: The Kank, Bear Notch, The Hurricane Mountain Road, Evans Notch, Grafton Notch, and the Magalloway. Although it's only 200 miles, it is a full-on experience. You'll gain and lose lots of elevation and experience tight twisties galore. The route climbs over a total of 12,000 feet and descends over 13,000 feet on grades exceeding 16% The views are spectacular throughout.
