About the orange color, is the formula really all there is to it?

When I painted orange there was three layers. First a baselayer of orange "normal" color. On top of this there is a sparkling layer and finally clear coat. The sparkling layer of the paint was the one that I could get only as KTM spare part. As far as I can tell from the formula it looks like the base layer...? I don't mind being wrong since the little can of 0.25 liter paint cost almost 100$ :eek1

I have the paper from KTM with color information at home, I can get it tomorrow if you are interested.

Yes, that would be great. The more information the better off we are. If you go to the link that Noise Data posted, when you get to the KTM Orange, it says that it is a 3 stage paint.

Here is the information from KTM:

First layer: Orange basic paint. Code: KTM205 or Iveco185 or Fiat056
Second layer: Helicon jade. KTM spare part number 304600 (0.25 liter)
    Third layer: Normal clear coat

The color codes for the first layer are for Standox paint system. Which one of the three codes your local paint shop will find depends on how updated their Standox system is. But with the formula from Noise Data you can't go wrong! The second layer is the sparkling one and I was only able to get it from KTM. I even called the Swedish agent for Standox since their homepage indicates that they have both layers. After some research (they were very helpful) they called me back and said that they know that the paint exists, it has a code but they did not have the formula :baldy Sooo, only solution was to go to my KTM-dealer, order the paint and ask what it costs :yikes

Anyway, the result of it all is very good. I used it to paint my helmet and the color is an exact match to the bike. Very nice but some may think it looks a little....:pimp...?

There is also a touch-up paint stick, spare part number 304601.
(I don't know if the paint stick is good, I don't have it.)

    /Anders.

Yep, my receipt is for 650 swedish kronor which is close to 100 US$ with todays exchange rate. You should ask your dealer though, prices seems to be lower in the US than they are here.

Yikes, that is expensive, but I know that multicolor paint is pricey. I have considered getting my own formula made up that would come close to the KTM sparkly orange. The only thing I don't like about the KTM sparkly orange is the strong yellow in it.

I know that someone on this form got his paint shop to mix their own color. The guy that did my job was also sure that he would be able to do the mix himself but he gave up after trying a few days....

I don't know what you are planning to do with your bike. If you only need to paint some damaged parts I would go for the recepie to get a perfect match. If you are planning to repaint everything it's another deal.

Apart from painting my helmet I also stripped my bike, sanded everything with 1200 grain wet paper and got three extra layers of clear coat on everything. The main reason for this was that I wanted to be able to polish out minor scratches (the original clear coat layer is very thin) but it also changed the color a little bit. It now has a deeper tone and is even more sparkling in sunshine:D

Anders, planning on repainting my whole bike(tank and fairing), an 02 640 Adventure, but I love that sparkly orange.

Do you have pictures of your bike?

Godspeed, I don't have any good pictures but will be able to take some in a couple of weeks when the bike is back together again. I don't however have a way to post them here. If you want, send me a PM with your e-mail adress and I will send pictures as soon as I have them.
