All through my childhood, we camped summers along the Eastern Sierra, usually at 10,000+ feet elevation. It gets darn cold up there at night.

I'm going to be riding up to the John Muir Wilderness at the top of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway on my way to Horizons Unlimited Yosemite in a couple of weeks. With this crazy heatwave we are having at the moment I am really looking forward to some of those cooler temperatures! I figure it will be anywhere from high-30's to low-50's at night depending on what kind of weather front is moving through. Tried to do this last year but only made it half way to the JMW before a storm forced me down to lower elevations (and a hotel room). Hoping to make it all the way there this year. Will come back down via Beasore Rd. and the Jones Store.

Dammit, I was going to head down to Mammoth for an overnighter and 108 over and 4 back leaving early Saturday. According to that link where 108 hits 395, that's the end of the road, closed from there on out.

I came down 395 from Reno to Tioga Pass on Wednesday. There's a detour that brings you East of 395 through Wellington and then you loop back to 395 just south of Bridgeport Reservoir.

I must have seen over a dozen wildfires on my way down from Seattle to San Diego.

    CalTrans just posted on FB:

"US395 IS NOW FULLY REOPENED, from Bridgeport to the Nevada State Line. Fire is no longer currently threatening Hwy."

It is still very smokey near the top on the west side of Sonora Pass (108), but certainly rideable. We had a short but heavy downpour last night, so I predict a lot of debris on the road today.

I was mountain biking in the Sierras last four days ... southeast shore and south of the lake. The air is pretty clear but had some heavy rain and thunder/lightning on Monday night, and heading home over Carson Pass (88) on Tuesday just after we finished our last ride, we had pounding rain and hail until well down the west side of the Carson Spur. Saw a lot of bikes on the road ... it looked miserable, I dropped to about 40 in my truck, wipers on high, temp was just above 50, very glad I was on 4 wheels with a roof. Summer is ending ...

Monitor pass is open again but boy that fire scorched out a big area from 395 west. Road's all clear, just a short spot of one-lane where they were clearing up something. It might get messy once there's heavy rain or in next year's melt-out, with all that vegetation burned off.

I lucked out with those thunderstorms, made it back to SF just ahead of them. That's a new one for the ride-the-passes checklist, right? I only checked the t-storm forecast for the crest, not all the way back to SF.

Thanks for the report. It's been kind of a nasty summer with the super hot weather, the fires, the smoke, the road construction... I am looking forward to the fall.

Yeah, they already had hail and snow on 108 earlier this week. Time for riding the passes is nearing the end for this year. I hope to be able to ride down to the Bishop area in mid to late October.

Highway 4 is going to be closed 7AM to 4:30PM on Wednesday Sept 27th for some kind of scheduled roadwork. The closure will be from the first gate east of Lake Alpine all the way to the Highland Lakes turnoff. I hope they will fix the frost heaves and potholes through that section.

395 north of Walker is being repaved. Typical Cal Trans job, one lane blocked 15 delays waiting for the pilot car.

I remember being up on 120 on Labor Day weekend In the early '80's and Tioga Pass was closed just as we pulled up to the eastern entrance.

I was hoping to ride over 4 (west to east) third week of October, maybe find some fire roads. What do you think?
