the Honda XR150L thread

    HI!!


    This is a thread that I hope will have many contributions, I do know it is a small cc bike and not available in the bigger markets (USA), anyway.



    I want to present what will be my new bike, I just need to go and pay it!!
    It is the Honda XR150L with a plenty powerful motor of 12 hp, I think it is available in Mexico, some Latin countries and in Australia, where is advertise as a ranch bike, not for me! It will be my commuter, take your child to elementary school and save gas bike!, it will complement my KLR very nice, and it is much lighter for trail riding.


    The specs are humble, and that is a good thing, the biggest plus I see are weight, tank size (over 3 gallons) and a comfortable seat capable of fitting 2 people, and it has a very good front brake. For me at 1.70 m or 5’8” it has good ergonomics, it is very similar to my first bike, a Bros 125.
    I still don’t have it, but I will be getting it in the coming days, until then, I leave the pics that I barrow from the web

    19 front 17 rear. if I want to find more dirt oriented tires, I will have to really dig, but I am not much into single track so, a 70-30/ 60-40 street-dirt is all I need.

    I have taken delivery of the bike and I can't wait for Sunday to come.

    THe rear brake is not worth the effort, but the front brake is enough, that is all I can say for now.

    first day or ridding,

    yesterday I did close to 30 miles and it is everything I was expecting, and more fun than that!

    I was busy going down town to do errands and stuff, so now the bike has been insure for about $90 usd for a year, only the legal stuff that I must have. Today I will go and try to get plates, and if that goes well, I will be 100% legal in this country!

    Tires are still in the break in, as well as the motor, I have only gone as fast as 50 mph on a down hill in 5th gear, and it feels a little sleepy, so for sure 55 mph will be so easy to maintain.

    In New Zealand this is known as a NXR150. It is mostly sold as a farm bike with the usual farm accessories such as front crash bars, large carry frame at the rear, right and left mounted side stands.

    It can also be purchased as a road legal option. This comes with road orientated gearing and tyres. I am seriously looking at one early next year. For exploring the back country gravel roads in my part of the world, it would be ideal. As long as you are not into the hp/speed frame of mind.

    It is a great bike, I am on the first tank of gas, so no numbers for mpg's, so far I have gone up to 90 km/hr just to make a pass, and I think I will do 100, all I need for my commute is 80-85 and dirt roads can be done at lower speeds, so I am very happy.

    I am thinking of putting a couple of accessories to make it "for me" So i will be borrowing stuff from my KLR and let's see what can be done.

    so here are the first mods I have done, nothing fancy just what I think I need.

    So the seat if ok, but I had to try and put an extra inch of height and from my KLR I barrow a Coleman ATV cover and it works very well. and since I commute to work a top box is a must for me, so I attach what I had and that 45L is a little to big for my taste but for now it will do, I will like to get a smaller one, 25-35 liter, but for now it will do.

    The top case is not completely secure, I just need to buy the hardware to properly fit it.

    Next up is the HID light I want to put on, I have it somewhere there in the closet so it should be a big improvement, and some hand guards.

    well I am writing this after only 250 km, so still a bigger trip need it to say more, but here it comes.

    THe top box I put is going out and back on the KLR. In it's place I will put a top box from Shad 33L that is in shape of a top box and not a side box, it is big enough for a helmet and then some, and nice shape for the two up days.

    2 up works well, in the city and up to 80 km/hr where I am running it at the moment as a top speed, I had my GF the other day and she was comfy and I could almost not feel her back there, it is a little unfair because she is like 5'4" and around 110 lbs (I think, I have not and will not ask)

    The front break is where good the back one is useless, suspension is good, not ohlnis but good for the bike and the speeds I am doing at the moment (very close to my style of ridding)

    More to come since I am on my winter vacations so I expect some ridding to be done in the next 2 weeks

    hey amigo, here are my ideas:

    Tornado vs XR150L.
    Both are hondas so that is great

    In favor of the XR150L
    lighter
    cheaper
    lower seat (I thing this is not a plus for you)
    sub frame
    Better MPG, over 90 mpg for the XR150 vs 60's for the Tornado, so a much bigger range per tank
    Better seat (not a MX like the one on the Tornado)
    Cheaper maintenance, oil filter is reusable (just wash and reinstall)
    better 2 up amenities, the seat is a like a 2 section area, so no slidding forward every time you break.

    In favor of the Tornado
    more power (over 110 km/hr is easy)
    it has a 6th gear
    21-18 tires, so finding very aggressive dirt oriented tires is simple
    higher seat allows you to have better view of the road
    better rear break

    tie
    lights are the same (average)
    brakes are good (front)
    looks

    If I could pay a Tornado I would, I could not, then I found this 150 so it was great deal.

    congrat amigo!! were are you located? I hope you enjoy your bike a lot, and that you have better luck then I did. I am thinking of buying a 2nd bike since I think it is a great urban companion.

    Hello from the Philippines,
    I purchased this XR150L in addition to my Kawasaki Rouser 180 (modified) and I really like this dual Sport better than the Rouser for most conditions. The ride is so much smoother and it feels very nimble and responses very well. Being a Dual Sport bike I feel confident no matter where I ride or what the road conditions are. Small CC... To some yes but it goes fast enough for me on the hiway. I rode it to Baguio City in the mountains here with the wife in tow and the bike did very well climbing and dealing with traffic. I am very pleased with the bike. I already have a little over 1000KM on it. I installed my GIVI 34L on it as well as my GPS. I just want to get the rack modified to allow for the soft side cases I purchased too and I'll be set. If there was anything I did not care for it's the headlight wiring... I wanted to install a LED headlight but There are two differences on this bike:
    1. The wiring is backwards compared to my Kawasaki. IE: the headlight wiring is one hot, two grounds through the switch... Normally it would be two hots (Hi & Low) and one ground... LED lights want to have Positive voltage on the Positive terminals not a ground. Light bulbs don't care about such things. :yikes
    2. It seems the headlamp is run on AC not DC. So to properly connect an LED headlamp you would need to either rectify the AC (and use only one light (Hi or Lo) or run different connections from the battery. The switch wiring? You may still be able to adapt it to work? not sure without a service manual which Honda will NOT give to you... I wrote and called...

    Also have a flickering headlight problem but will see how it goes at night.

    Hello Kai,
    I think if you look close the tail light also flickers. On the Honda (and many others) the lamps are run by AC not DC so they flicker at lower RPM's.
    It doesn't hurt your ability to see at night if you are riding. Just may bother you a little when you stop at a red light or somewhere else. :-)
    As I stated in my post I wanted to install an LED but the wiring does not support it directly. But I have no real issue with the stock lamp, it is Bright! Real bright at night.
