    The link is of my bike loaded for a short 400 mile ride and a quick overnight campout. Yes, it looks like a lot of gear, and that's intentional because it was a shake down run for a much longer trip I'm headed out on soon, and I wanted to check out how everything would fit together and ride in some very rough terrain. It all worked very well. BTW, my new tank allows me 200 miles before the low fuel light illuminates. On my bike, the low fuel light comes on with one gallon of useable fuel left, so I'm close to a 250 mile range now. :clap

    Anyways...my version of a VentureBerg.

    The fairing was a huge (yes huge) improvement in my ability to keep sanity with the freeway/highway miles getting to the dirt which we all love.

    The Safari tanks (front and rear) have given me the freedom to not be such a gas whore - allowing me to stay on the dirt and detour toward the gas stops.

    The front tank took the usual finagling to get fitted. Although, the excessive removal of material to get the aluminum clamp that secures the two tanks was quite ridiculous, but allowed me to exercise patience and a couple of Manhattans.

    The rear tank was a piece of cake. Well...except it does not fit with the rear sub-frame on the ’11’s that have the smog crap (this took quite a lot of modification - I can share info with those who need it). In installing the rear tank....I gave up the (leaky and painfully slow to fill (NOTE: just my opinion)) 70deg rear sub frame tank. I don’t know if the added (theoretical 1.6 gal) is worth it. It kind of makes my (the berg’s my) ass look a little fat! I guess only time will tell...

    The Force bash plate has been quite practical...All of my tools (sans: tire levers, epoxy, Loctite (Apple thinks this should be spelled lactate - WTF?), chain breaker, duct tape, zip ties and bolts). Before camp I fill up the 2L hydration on my back and the 3L in the bash plate. This provides me enough water for dinner (freeze dried), tea at night and coffee/oatmeal in the morning (need to water down the bitter Starbucks Via) and re-filling the hydration on my back.

    I have been quite happy with the Kriega Overland 30 for the ability to carry what I need. Equivalent, but waterproof, and I find easier to pack compared to the GL.

    I can go into more detail if need on the rest of the set-up if prompted.

    ...and to conclude....I’m loving the Berg...

    damn, some nice pics there. makes all our mountains around here look like hills... which in fact they are.

    some of you know our bergs are inclined to chew out countershafts with lots of miles (especially without a cush drive hub).

    i was chatting with a mechanically inclined mate and he wants me to take my berg over next week as he thinks he can make a steel plate to bolt over the front sprocket and use the holes in the OEM front sprocket to put bolts through. he reckons if this is tightened down very firmly it will minimize movement on the shaft and reduce wear.

    i figured it could be worth a shot, and if it works i'll pass on the info. but anyone got thoughts on why this will or won't work? my first thought is whether there is enough room behind the front sprocket to get a nyloc nut on to the bolts....

    If so, my guess is this is caused by a impulse force from the front sprocket to the spline. To reduce the shock load (impulse force) to the spline you would need to distribute the energy elsewhere. Is this the intent? Forgive me - I'm not trying to being critical (I just don't have all the information), but I'm having trouble understanding how securing the front sprocket as described above would eliminate this scenario. Is the thought to distribute the energy to the bolt through the washer that secures the sprocket?

    I concur. Nicely done.

    I count myself lucky so far - 110 hrs and about 3,000 miles. No damage that I can see. This past year hasn't seen me doing much DS riding though. My wrist is about 70% recovered, and I'm planning on doing the Reno RR200 in September.

    I can't picture this (or maybe I can)...

    Are you saying run bolts through the holes in the C/S sprocket? It's not any side-to-side motion that causes the wear and tear on the C/S splines, it's the shock of the engine's power pulses being transferred directly through the chain to the rear wheel, with no cushioning in between - that's what a cush drive provides.

    Nice setup Pinevalley!

    How does the rear Safari tank work together with luggage strapped on the rear fender? And how did you route the fuel line connection to the front? There were several people at the Tuareg Rally this year that had problems with fuel lines getting ripped out as they were not able to secure them safely out of the way.

    I have the 70° Racing version 2 subframe tank on mine and really love that is adds no bulk or weight whatsoever. The filling does take a bit longer but even during the Rally I didn't mind as I could always use the 3 minutes to recover.... :D

    The domed washer (ideally the hardened one from Dirt Tricks which doesn't flatten out like the stock KTM/Berg one) already prevents any lateral movement of the countersprocket on the shaft and is needed to keep the seal in, so I'm not sure how your plate would work either. There is not enough room to distribute the load more if that was his idea.

    I'll attempt to get some photos tonight to show the luggage and the fuel line connections.

    I feel ok about the front lines except for exposure of the petcocks (Lost Rider already brought this up). The rear lines will require some further work as the route Safari suggests contacts the rear shock.

    i'm not sure if my mate thinks eliminating side-to-side motion is the main aim, or actually trying to use the main bolt to cope with the pulses from the engine. but i agree that the dirt tricks washer should cure the first issue, and it's doubtful the second will work. he wants to have a play around with it this weekend, will advise if any positive outcome but probably put it on one of the threads to do with stripped countershafts and a link from this thread. thanks for the comments!

    Lukas, Hope this answers some of your questions (and hopefully I’m not adding too much fluff):

    First attachment of the Kriega Overlander 30:

    The front strap is wrapped around the front of the rear tank (I copied this from Lost Rider who wraps his around the rear plastic).

    For the rear of the bike I used the standard Kriega mounting loops. Due to the increased girth I needed to add some length to the strap. I ended up utilizing a quickdraw - length ended up being spot on (dumb luck).

    The added girth of the tank has afforded some restate to tuck my tarp poles in this nook:

    In addition, I found these cool little bags from Ortlieb (http://www.ortliebusa.com/prodInfo.asp?pid=76&cid=2):

    I’m using these to store what would normally be stashed in a tank bag.

    One other nifty pouch I found very useful is a mountain bike feed bag (available from cyclosource, http://www.adventurecycling.org/cyc...king/sp/revelate-designs-mountain-feed-bag/):

    I stuff all my “day” food in there and munch as often as I can.

    Before I got the mega tanks I was trying to find a solution to carry extra fuel. I got these MSR bottle holders from Storm Industries (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=487221). Now I’m stuffing my spare tube and tire irons in there.

    Ok…now for the fuel line routing:

    T-fitting from right side is barely visible. I added some silicone coated fiberglass insulation (Mcmaster Carr 6172T13) around the fuel line where it routes near the exhaust. You can barely make this out in the photo (orange).

    I deviated from the Safari instructions here and ran the fuel line along the frame; between the motor and the bash plate.

    Per the Safari instructions this line is now to be routed and zip tied to the rear shock guard (sorry no photo). I find this to not be working well. Eventually the fuel line migrates into the path of the rear spring. This could be due to a couple of issues I created: thicker section of tubing I created with the insulation, I’m strapping both the rear right side and the stock tank feed to this attachment point and cannot get a good purchase on the tubes with this zip tie, my section of tubing is too long and it is forcing it to pooch out into the spring – either way this needs to be fixed.


    Rear left side – sorry no photo, but installed as suggested by safari.

    I ended up routing all the supply lines from the Safari tanks and the main tank feed line to a manifold.

    Eventually the intent is to add quick disconnects (McMaster Carr) once I find a routing solution I’m happy with.

    For re-routing the rear left side I might play around with running the line from the tank to the frame, down the frame where the rear master resides and to the manifold. It would be away from the rear shock, but quite close to the exhaust. I had previously run the straps from my luggage in that location and had not issues with melting. One way to find out…

    I am in the process of getting my Berg and my son's DR-Z400E ready for some adventure rides. While not a multi-day ride, a few weeks ago my daughter and I did a scenic 125 mile ride through some of the local canyons near Salt Lake City. The ride included about 25-30 of dirt road and about 2 miles of narrow single track. The scariest part was the 9 miles of freeway.

    Even though the DRZ is pretty large and heavy for my daughter, she did really well. We would have even ridden more single track if we had more time.
