IIRC, you have a Ruger GP 100? If so, and you don't have a center-fire semi-auto, maybe the 1911 would be a better choice to begin the process of rounding out your arsenal..... :evil

Anyone have a book that can date early S&W revolvers? I have an old model 10 38 special that has a serial # of 930012. It was carried by my great-uncle as a small town police officier at least 40 years ago.

    Thanks in advance, D

I was just wondering about gun selection at local retailers. Saw a picture (Gun Trader) of what I assume was a local gun shop in the country and it seemed a lot different than the local shops here in Fort Lauderdale.
The picture of their shop showed mostly rifles (wood stocks) but here we have counters full of plastic pistols and walls of AR / AK's.
Not a fan of tacticool weapons as I don't see the need for them.
I prefer more classic rifles and revolvers. They all do the same thing after all.
    What do you see locally?

I would say that your Model 10 was made at least 40 years ago.

We have two gun stores in an area of about 200k population. One has ONE "tactical" type rifle and the other has two. Both shops have a decent selection of new and used rifles, maybe 70% wood. Both have a selection of most of the new metal and plastic handguns as well as some old stuff.

Thirty miles South or sixty miles North, things change alittle. Take note that I'm in coastal California.. If you go 100 miles inland, things change alot.

Smith and Wesson doesn't seem to have the year/nembers info published online like Ruger and Colt do. Try snooping around this S&W Forum . http://smith-wessonforum.com/forum.php

Does it by any chance have a C prefix in front of the number? If so, it was made in 1967. If not, I do not know.

Have two shops town, really two small towns, maybe 15,000 people tops. One has a indoor range the other is out of a guys house since 1963, he's the ex fire chief. I think the one with the shooting range is owned by the ex police chief. Miwall ammo is right next door also and they have a huge ass Fathers Day sale every year.

Good prices, low enough that you don't want to make the hour drive and back to Sacramento.

Lots of cool used, and new, very wide range of guns. Not a lot of black guns, probably a California thing but Cabelas in Reno is close. Scored two nice, basically new, no longer in production lever action guns this year, one at each place.

They both have the small town feel, everybody's friends vibe to them. On a side note the DMV also kicks ass, never a wait.

The only time I went to Cabelas in Reno it was a mad house at the gun counter not a lot of personal service, sort of like a dealer that sells a 1000cc sport bike to a 16 year old.

You must be psychic , Can you PM me the lottery numbers for this Friday?:evil I'll be glad to split it even with you, I get 90% you get 10.

Thanks George, I was guessing it was around that era since He retired from law enforcement in the late 60's.

I wasnt looking for an exact date . I just want to document some info on a few family heirlooms that I want my son to have someday. Hopefully He will find them as sentimental as I do and not care about the dollar value.

Anyone else have guns you would never part with? My grandfathers Johnson 1941 and My other grandfathers very early 1100 (1963) are a couple that I would have a hard time letting go of.

So I assume you have only a 4" 357 for HD and a 12g for birds and deer and such? Outside of those two guns, everything else is somewhat superfluous based on 'need'. All the other stuff has more to do with 'want' than 'need'.

    Plus, you know, zombies... :clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap

You pretty much got it. More than one .357 and a lever 30-30 though.

I think he is the bear's friend....but when I start to ask him about the chicken he just stops talking and looks at one of those long mean looking guns....we really need to think about this bear arms thing.

I like the FAL quite a bit, and if one crossed my path at the right price I would grab it in a second. Also have a soft spot for a CETME also....but I seem to like wood better. I have never been confortable with this "kit" gun idea....most likely because I know little about it.....I think if I looked into it and gave it a chance I would get hooked pretty easy.
