How much would you estimate that you spent each day (average) while riding the KAT?

No I didn't. The reroute was very short, maybe 200 yards. Coming from Appalachia pass the radar tower the track stayed left and encountered the gate. A middle line dead ended at a radio tower. A third line to the right is an old logging road that was over grown but easily passable. We came across another gate that had easy passages around it on either side.
We have been running into several issues of gates popping up in the area. Penn Virginia owns much of the old mining areas people once considered "public". They have recently started leasing land for hunters. The hunters are responsible for the land and put gates up. Of course they shouldn't do so on a public road but it has happened. I'm not sure if this is what has happened on Black Mountain but could be.
Let me know when you're in the area and want me to tag along. I live in Big Stone Gap. If you want to see some other forest roads in the area I can give you a tour.

Day 4 - 112 miles, CliffView to Jackson. Only 5 of us now. A couple of riders needed to cut the trip short on Monday as I did today. This was the stretch of the KAT that takes us north to the NADA tunnel and has a lot (A LOT) of mud. There were also some fairly deep water crossings as a result of the heavy rains on Monday. No serious mishaps although I had to be rescued from underneath my DR650 on the side of a river bank. I flopped over at 0 MPH and got my leg trapped - fortunately @PYG RYDR was along to pick that big ole girl up off of me. :thumb

However, unfortunately I had to quit 2 days early because I needed to get home for an important meeting. The remaining 4 are pressing on.

There were lots of slick gutters

There were lots of gigantic mudholes

    There were several LONG crossings

And this one was deeper than my boots! Damn it! Yeah, I know it's shallow at the ripples but the road crosses upstream.

We just took a f**k 'em attitude and rode around the gates.

We just rode around the side of this gate and the one past it when riding clockwise two weeks ago. There was no ambiguity about the track on the Montanas we were using, so we assumed it was okay for us to ride through.

To add to Gavin’s post, there was ko ambiguity and Jeff has been clear on this thread that he’s done a lot of research and had many discussions to confirm the track is ok. We discussed and then easily rode around.

I’m pretty sure it’s an illegal closure, I’ve got my contacts checking on it to make sure.

I’m actually coming down to that area on nov 10-12 to check out some new stuff. Have you ever been up to hole in the rock?

This is the first gate (going clockwise). There is another several miles further on. It's easy to ride around both for now.

Just another creek before Monday's deluge

This was a very difficult washout. It was NOT a "hard" section

Did I mention there was a mudhole or two?

    Wait, let's think about this...

Go up there all the time on ATVs, coming in from the VA side or KY side?

Probably the KY side. It looks like on satellite images that there is an old road that runs right on the state line for a really long ways. Is that the case or is it all grown up?

That is correct good trail along the ridge on Stone Mountain. Really rough in places.

Is there a way to get up to it from the KY side a little east from the Hensley Settlement?

I have heard of it but never ridden there. Right now I have plans Nov 11 but can be free the 10th or 12th.

I might have to get some luggage on my DR650. That looks like fun!
