map quest says that it's 154.54 miles from Clover to Hot Springs......so how did I end up putting 2,600 mi on the old DR?:scratch

:deal I had vacation time already allotted for this week and since my wife has recently started a new job.....she didn't. Now she tried to get me to stay home and do some work around the house....blah blah blah.... But I decided she was just a bit jealous and the house would still be here falling apart when I got home, and that looks to be the case.:lol3

:ricky ROAD TRIP on the dual sport!!!:thumb
I knew that there wasn't enough rear tire left for the loop I was contemplating...
So I decided to just take a new one along and finish burning this one up as the first couple of days would have a lot of pavement.
I wanted to stay to back roads and hopfully do a bit of exploring but I also had a lot of ground to cover today so I started out with about 50 mi of super slab to get me near the mountains of NC. Then I climbed up to the BRP on old 16:thumb
    [IMG]
If you ever find yourself passing through the little town of West Jefferson, NC stop in here and see Julie (we used to work for the same company) who now runs this very nice little coffee shop and makes a mean egg sandwich too!!:thumb :thumb
    [IMG][IMG]
She's on the bottom floor of an old mill that's been converted into shops and condos. Tell her one of her old "airport buddies" sent ya!

:ear I was recently informed that #16 becomes really sweet bit of twisty pavement as it passes through Va up into WVa. So that was the plan but not before I explored a scenic little gravel "short cut" near Mt Rogers.
    Twisties!:thumb
    [IMG]
How could anyone see a sign like this and not want to go check it out?
It looked like things could get real slippery when wet.
    [IMG][IMG]
I don't have GPS neither did I have a topo map of this area.....so I wimped out and turned around after a couple of miles of this.
    Back to the twisties!:ricky
    [IMG][IMG]
Va is a very scenic state!:D
    [IMG]
Then I find this.......and just can't stop myself this time, it's got to go somewhere, right?
    [IMG][IMG]
None of this is on the map either, but I decide to take a chance on my manly hunter instincts and keen sense of direction to get me back on track.:evil
    [IMG]
Then I soon come into this little crater-like valley that strikes me as being a little slice of heaven.
It turns out to be a place called Burkes Garden.
The sign above the door makes a mighty claim......but I'm thinking it may be hard find any evidence to dispute it.
But then trouble seems that it may be just around the corner!:evil
    [IMG]
Then just as I thought that I was getting back on course someone decided to drive down into a BIG ditch.:eek1 as we all waited for the tow truck to do it's thing, I struck up a conversation with the driver behind me, who informed me that there had been some murders up on that first FR that checked out but turned around on.......maybe that was a good call!:scratch
    [IMG]
Well it wasn't too long and I was in WVa.
My original plan was to make it up into and across Ohio to my inlaws......so I didn't do any exploring here just blasted on through. One thing about WVa though....they don't build too many straight-aways!:thumb :ricky
    [IMG][IMG]
I had a back road route planned across Ohio but my Va explorations put me there close to sunset so I decided to to go ahead and hit the slab across to Dayton.:baldy Mileage for day one turns out to be over 630 miles.

It turned out to be a beautiful Sunday morning for Mothers Day. The baby birds were waiting for their Mommy to bring back breakfast.
    [IMG][IMG]
    and the flowers were blooming
    [IMG]
After a lazy morning I had lunch with my wife's Mom and Sister then hit the road later that afternoon.
I've heard the phrase "die with your boots on" but give me a break! only in Ohio
    [IMG]
This might have been a nice picture if sombody hadn't parked that ugly old bike there.:lol3
    [IMG]
I liked the style of this bridge that crossed into Kentucky.:thumb
    [IMG][IMG]
Eastern Ky is quite scenic also.:thumb
    [IMG]
Kentucky is also known worldwide for it's "horse-power"
I arrived at Cave Run Lake by sunset and set up camp for the night.

Monday morning I got up with the sun to see what looked to become a great day!
    Camp Banjo....Kentucky style.
Leaving the spur road from the campground are several FRs and I just didn't care where they ended up......:ricky
    [IMG]
Turns out that it was a "short-cut" and I'm back at the main road.:thumb
    [IMG]
Exploring some really nice scenic and twisty back roads!
The "highway" now goes thru this narrow one lane tunnel:thumb in the Red River Gorge.
Then I decided to take a little break and hike up to the "Natural Bridge"
This trail was size restricted:lol3 I barely squeezed through.
    The top of the bridge.
    The view from the top.:thumb
    [IMG]
A balanced rock along the trail.
    Another big undercut.
It was a nice hike and blooms lined a good part of the trail. :deal See there, I stopped some to smell the flowers...then I sneezed.:lol3
    [IMG]
Eastern Kentucky was very scenic as I wound my way down to Tennessee. Soon I found myself at Cumberland Gap. Here's the view from the pinnacle.
Welcome to Tennessee........Mother's Day was yesterday.........get in the back woman.:wave
    [IMG]
Scenes from some Smokie Mountain back roads.:lurk

A nice little waterfall on the climb from Browns to Tn #32.
I'll let you in on a little secret:ear 32 is a sweet little piece of twisty pavement.....I was having too much fun to take any pics for ya!:ricky
Some views from the foothills parkway. (the color got weird on my camera)(also had a couple of failed uploads to smugmug, so I think some pics lost something in the upload):baldy
I edited this one to be B&W
    [IMG]
I actually know a back roads way to get between Pigeon forge and Gatlinburg without getting stuck in traffic!:thumb :thumb
So soon I was heading through "The Dragon" as I have done many times before.....but late afternoon turned out to be a great time to run it, as I only had to pass 2 cruisers and had no squids to deal with.:lol3
    Mandatory pic.
All in all it was a great day!!:thumb :thumb and I made camp for the night at Horse cove along the river.

It looks to be another beautiful day in the making. Up with the sun to break camp and the nice retired couple camping next door invite me over for some coffee.:thumb
    [IMG]
The entrance to the Cherohala is only a couple of miles from camp and that's where you must choose the left road or the right road.:scratch
    [IMG]
    The RIGHT choice!:ricky
    [IMG]
Sweet little cabin across from some campsites on the river.
    My view of the Cherohala.
I don't know who they are trying to fool.....this road was actually pretty smooth.
    Going down the Tennessee side.
Thanks for going before me and making me feel welcome my fellow ADVer's:lol3

    Bald River Falls
    [IMG]
It's a very scenic ride out from the falls!:D
    [IMG]
From Telico Plains I headed south and found a FR that led back over to Murphy, NC
    [IMG]
Looks like low water:eek1 more evidence of just how dry it's been here lately.

    Welcome to Georgia!!!:D :ricky :thumb
