Cool trip, I went to HSU in the 80's and spent many weekends at Fern Canyon. Heading up that way again in a couple of weeks.

It's like Arcata is stuck in time, the town has not changed, same businesses etc...behind the Redwood curtain

I forgot the best part! Well, not best, but amusing anyway.

As we went through the agriculture check station in Truckee, Hans said that his earplug came out and motioned to the side. We pulled over on the highway just after the ag check where there was a big island surrounded by eight lanes of westbound highway. He parked and put down his kickstand, but it didn't quite deploy. 600 pounds of motorcycle and gear ungracefully laid gently to the tarmac. I of course started laughing. Laughing so hard in fact, that I failed to notice that with the angle of the gutter, my bike was precariously upright on its kickstand. As I dismounted, I pushed off my bike and it toppled over in the other direction. There we were two fluorescent morons on the side of the I-80. A car honked at us. Truckers were laughing as they rumbled by. Truly humiliating and funny as hell. I wish I would have gotten a photo.

What can I say? Our bikes like cat naps. Maybe I will try some NoDoze in the tank next time.
I like that we can just drop these things and just laugh. No worries about the plastic or chrome.

    Well told story.

And I've got to remember that line. I did *not* fall over, my bike just likes spontaneous cat naps. :rofl

I just took 49 while on a bidness trip (in my rental car) Really jealous of the roads y'all have out there to ride. NW Florida (Buzztopia) is NOTHING like that!!

49 is OK, very scenic but it can be slow with all of the the traffic through some of the small towns. Since Hobbes didn't make it to the Lost Coast we did it for her last week :D. Found the back road into Oroville and 162 to be a perfect alternative to Hwy 20. Came home on Hwy 36 all the way to 89 then cut over to 49 on the Gold Lake Rd.

Hwy 36 from Fortuna is a fantastic route from the coast. Very light traffic, actually saw more motorcycles than cages, I guess it's not a secret :evil

162 sounds familiar, and I think I did pass through Oroville. I'll have to look at my work GPS and see where I actually went.
Edit: Looks like Marysville Rd., Marked Dark Day Campground as I stopped for a smoke, Hwy 49, and CA 20...

Sorry you didn't get to complete the trip -- I was up there a few weeks ago -- nothing short of awesome!! Here's a view from Usal Road -- in case you need some incentive to give it another try :D

We will be back. From what we saw of Usal, it would have been a nice day.

    oldtrucks-
Glad to have inspired a new direction. It is always hard to find new stuff in the same old roads I travel over and over.
I have taken the back way to Oroville several times. From Nevada City- 49/Moonshine/Marysville/Oregon Hill/LaPorte/Forbestown. It is a nice alternative. If you haven't taken 162 East of Oroville after it turns into the Oroville/Quincy highway, put that on your list too.

We missed it by a day, heading over to the coast the weather was great, by the time we got into Fort Bragg it was foggy and we had rain and fog along the Lost Coast.

Fern Canyon is in my sights for a camping trip soon.

on the topic of unexpected tip overs...

Camping in Chicken Alaska two years ago and needed to make a trip to the facilities late at night -- so I took the bike as it was several hundred yards away. Put the bike on the side stand when I returned and woke up to fine her napping :huh

Yikes! Did you replace your divot?
I routinely endo/crash/thrash my dirt bikes into all sorts of rocks/holes/slimepits,I really try to keep the bigger bikes upright.
But you never know when your number is up.
