anyone up for the Mat ->Tat in June of 18? my friend and I are planning for Tat, myself on Husqy 701 he on a klx 400 from New hampshire ... then I came across this Mat..we will be mostly camping with an occasional motel ..

It's more fun in November. This is just north of there.
I'm using a Garmin Zumo 390 and Garmin GPSMAP 60 combination on the bike. I like to have a backup when I'm off-road.

The Kentucky Adventure Trail, the Blue Ridge Trail, the Maine Adventure Trail and several other adventure rides are in close proximity in SW Virginia. Unfortunately they don't all intersect so there's no "grid" of adventure riding without some pavement connectors. Here's a little 140ish mile connector that maximizes the unpaved roads between Appalachia (KAT) and Damascus (MAT, BRT, etc) Virginia. This track is a cut and paste of tracks I have ridden in the past but to confirm that it works I drove some of it yesterday in my Jeep (it was 18° F - so no, I did NOT ride). Section 1 has a winter and a summer option. IMO, the summer option is a better DS ride but the NFS closes that section when there's snow on the ground because they can't maintain it or rescue stranded "adventurers" up there during those months.
These are all public roads, much of it maintained gravel so this is easily rideable on pretty much any motorcycle. You will however, hear banjos from time to time. Enjoy!
I wouldn't mind ride the MAT2 again. Three of us on 250's rode only to the Maine border. But doing the rest would be interesting.
But I was checking out the MAT1 part to see if it might be a good loop for a round trip down to start the MABDR.
Anyone go some insight on the MAT1?
Same thought here with MAT1/MABDR loop ride. I'm sure others thinking the same too. MAT1 and MABDR overlap at points, but you'll be riding in the opposite direction heading back north.
Have you put them side by side in Basecamp yet? It'll show where the overlaps are as well as other routes like TET/TAT, etc. (if you have those).
I've ridden sections of MAT1 west of Harrisonburg, VA in the spring and fall––good riding. Probably sections further north too, but just didn't know it. I made up a twisty street connector for joining the MABDR start (Damascus,VA) with MAT1 on a north/south direct-ish line––if interested, lmk.
I don't do long haul dirt riding anymore, but plan to van basecamp and do day/2day overnight loop rides to the North and South and then leapfrog camp to the middle of the next ride sections.
Looks like you added a good bit of torque to your ride since doing MAT2.
Hey I got a new bike in the stable. But I still have CRF250. Got too much invested,I'd never get my money back so I figure my grandson will get it someday.
I'm still figuring out Basecamp, can get an overlap of the MABDR and MAT1. But I can see that they cross and parallel one another. I don't have the TAT or TET. But was checking out how to run the MABDR into the MAT2. I enjoyed the MAT2 so run some of that then heading to the lake area has crossed my mind.
I'm new to off-road and too old to get to aggressive, but enjoying the hell out of dirt/gravel roads with some double track thrown in.
So here's the hi level overview. MAT1 (blue) and MABDR (yellow and red) overlap a lot. No surprise, the best routes are the best routes...
Thanks thump!. Yeah I figured out Basecamp and got that figured out. Was trying to find the TET, but no luck. A buddy said he has it. But is laid up from surgery. No hurry. It's too damn cold now anyhow. Lol.
