It felt good to be riding in the woods again, shaking the cobwebs out of the bike-body interface.

You can see the weather building in the next shot... it would dump some rain on Dean on his ride home. :doh

and we hadn't had any food since, well... since the night before.

    Snack time!

Meanwhile, I had noticed that Dean's tail light assembly was flopping around...

If only he had dynabeads perfectly balancing his wheels... stuff like that wouldn't shake itself loose all the time. :lol3

We said our good-byes, and Dean headed for home. He has much better photos in his slide show; I only have this one:

And I didn't realize that he had turned his head just as the shutter snapped. Oops. A Halenda or Margus I ain't. :doh

It's a real comfort having a send-off by locals at the beginning of a Mobius leg. We've been fortunate on each of the four legs so far to have local contacts available "just in case"... Rick (Motor1) in TN :bow The mighty Todd in Albuquerque :thumb, my brother and sister-in-law in Flagstaff :beer, and Mike and Dean in Reno :super. Thanks to all of you for the offers of support... but at a certain point, we've got to forge out on our own, and for Mobius 4, the time had come.

We clicked into gear, and headed for:

I was going to have to pay more attention to our route and navigation. Here's what we did that first day (Sat, Sept. 12, 2009):

Yuba pass is right where our route in green crosses hwy 49. It was getting late in the day, so we had to start thinking about where we were going to sleep for the night. At a minimum I wanted to try to get to Quincy, CA. I didn't mind staying in a hotel, we were still shaking down the gear, and I had some chores to do to get the helmet cam mounted which would be easier indoors, instead of by campfire light.

The next section put us parallel to hwy 89, but at a higher elevation, and gave us great views down into the valley.

It got a little technical at times,

but the views just kept coming.

We blew through Graegle, not stopping for gas, nor groceries,

and pushed towards a motel in Quincy. Between Quincy and Graegle, we had some unfinished business... :deal the Johnsville-McCrea road, past a couple of 7000ft. peaks where we got stopped by snow, riding from the opposite direction last May:

    [flashback :norton]

Well, this time we got through, and boy, was it worth it! :ricky:ricky

Campground, we considered stopping by to visit the hosts Don & Nicole who had been so kind as to let us stay there on Mobius-III on the day before they officially opened. We could see their camper, but when we saw this

we figured they'd be gone, and we were losing daylight quickly. We pressed on:

near the snowmobile hut, that took us past Pilot Peak,

I wasn't sure if it would go through, or be ridable.

we knew the go-around was good since we had done it in May,

LDF was game to try... it was beautiful.

    We began our descent,

and eventually reconnected with the paved Quincy-LaPorte road.

It felt good... meeting the challenge of exploring an unconfirmed route, navigating, riding, conquering... :gdog

Stats for the special section: 22mi, 1h25min, avg speed 15mph. Just about right.

when we pulled into Quincy. The first motel we went to wanted $80, so we tried across the stree... the Gold Pan for $60, where other motorcycle riders seemed to be staying; a BMW group, and on the other side, a HD group.

The desk clerk was one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, maybe a slight eastern european accent, and she was sporting some cleavage to beat the band. Sorry, no pic :dunno. I bring it up because only 'cause it cost me $20... here's how:

Sorry about the sound so low...

    Moon's Restaurant, in Quincy:

At dinner, we could overhear from the other tables that there was some BMW rally, or event nearby. Maybe someone will recognize someone?

    Hey Dr. Rocco and LDF,
It was great to ride along with you, and I would like to say thanks once again for the used dirt bags.

The Quincy Laporte road is a raging hoot for logging pavement time. There are plenty of declining radius turns to keep you honest, or see if you have any lean left. All of the foothill roads on the west side are a bunch of fun. Some of the smaller roads are about 1.5 cars wide with no centerline; up one ridge road, down the next, repeat.

Video is a great addition. When do we get to see the drinking/carrying on vids where your NFY accents really come out?

I just watched Rainy Ride Home, http://vimeo.com/5317628 that was some major filtering... talk about adventure... the guy on the single speed was pulling off a pretty good trackstand, and the street (your street?) with pavers was pretty cool.

this is gonna be good :smile6:rofl:smile6:rofl:smile6:rofl:smile6:rofl

We were the first up, and could tell something was going on overnight with the bikes in the parking lot. :brow

Let's just say there was an uncomfortable silence,

    and some sheepish grins,

and if by some means, a few months from now, one of those boxer or v-twins gives birth to a little thumper, we are NOT responsible for maintenance or oil changes.
