Not the earliest start... but not bad. Wheels rolling 'round 8:20. :thumb

Today would take us from Plum Valley campground in Modoc NF, through another quagmire and re-route, up to rejoin the TAT in Ft. Bidwell, CA where we left off last May, fuel & provisions in Lakeview, OR, then northwest to camp again at Sandhill Crossing campground in the Freemont NF.

so we didn't have much more to climb to start getting some great views [didn't turn out so well, but Mt. Shasta was WAY in the distance]:

what a nice campfire, a fine bottle of wine, and a good night's rest can do for the spirit. :pynd

"and it struck me soon after we emerged from this quagmire that at the top of that hill she had somehow graduated as an adventure rider."

This was such a wonderful and telling comment. Loved it. It aptly describes a feeling we've all had about ourselves or seen in someone else. I'll drink to that.

    Who'd have thunk?

We were following tracks I pulled off GpsXChange.com from Countdown's very own SMTS file he posted. Looking back on it now, there's a disclaimer that the route is for serious trail bikes. And it was first posted in 2005. And I'm not exactly sure how the tracks were generated... by actually riding the route, or by tracing it out on a computer. :scratch

In any case, like I said before, knowing (or at least thinking) that someone else had ridden the route we were on before can be a comfort... or a liability. I should have started to worry, when the road started looking like this... that we were entering.... [cue booming deep voice with lot's 'o reverb] :dog"The Quagmire Zone"

ended up not involving pavement at all...

The initial failed go-around added a single mile to our day, and the eventual go-around cost us 6 miles... the total quagmire: 1 hour, 40 minutes... and one mirror.

All to connect a mere 1/4 mile. :baldy

This is what we saw on the other side:

and the GPS screen from there:

Almost 11am, and we've netted only 28 miles for the day... :photog Oh well, at least nobody got hurt. :dunno

Looking at the topos, I knew there was more of the same between us and Fort Bidwell, so when I saw that Fandango Pass Road was in fact NOT paved,

I figured that would be a great way to bump us back on track.

    And so it was. :D

A good name for a candy, I think. :scratch

It seems the pioneers preferred it to a quagmire as well (click the photo to access to a larger version "X3" or "O")

And it provided a nice view of the dry lake in Surprise Valley below.

We were re-entering familiar territory from M-3,

and it wasn't long before we were on the valley floor, heading for our rendezvous with the TAT. :D

when we leave the TAT to take a photo pointing in the direction we're leaving it...

    [flashback to M-3 last May]

and then a new photo in the same spot, but pointing in the opposite direction when we return...

Since y'all have come along this far, why don't ya step in for this one? :thumb<object width="640" height="360">
