I was never bothered by the appearance of bears before ....didn't give them a 2nd thought. And, here I live in a neighborhood where one might show up at my door tonight! That is until early this summer, I was camping not too far from here in the Brakes Interstate Park in Virginia when a bear showed up in the middle of the night....12:30 AM! I noted the time...why I'll never know...but the critter turned over the garbage can and then moved just outside my tent and finished off the contents. I could clearly hear ever snap of his teeth as he ate his midnight dinner...., breathing....you name it! All I had for defense was my camera...and there I was "wide awake" straining to look out of a tent that had no windows and only one door! My bike was standing close by out of the tent door on the center stand. I had prepared no meals but from time to time carried food in the side cases....I was really concerned he would attempt to tear into it. It turned out he finished off the chicken bones and whatever else my camp neighbor had managed to put into the trash can....good thing for him...otherwise I would have had to flash him when he stuck his head in the tent! After he was gone..I had to take a leak in the worse way....but no way was I going to get out of that tent in the middle of the night!
I've said it before and will say it again...this rr is off the chart! Thank you so much for taking what must be hours and hours to provide us, the reader, with such a wonderful adventure! God Love You!

Am I the only one afraid of real honest to god scary bears?

Once I was out after work with 4 female coworkers and this weird huge guy with huge elvis sideburns approached our table standing behind me and asked one of the girls across from me to dance. She said 'no thank you'.

SO he looked at me, and said, well I guess you'll do, and before I could say 'no tha' he lifted me out of my chair and next thing I know I'm on a dance floor with a 6'8" 240# Elvis.

There are Scary, Scary bears out there, particularly in Seattle.

We were only at about 4000ft, so I can't blame the elevation on my confusion. :dunno

We made a turn, and just past the intersection, I spied a pull-out. I activated the Scala's, and suggested to LDF that we take another little break and snack on the bananas and raspberries we had brought from Hood River.<object width="640" height="360">

Mount St. Helens? :scratch The snow at the top looks to be a different pattern than the other peak. We were almost equidistant to Adams and Mt. St. Helens... I don't know, and I didn't stop to confirm... I know, dumb. :doh

I definitely knew it wasn't Jefferson. We'd only catch a glimpse of the peaks here and there, and then we'd snake around a ridge, and twist down into a valley, and then see another peak, and as big as they are, strangely, they were hard to keep track of.<object width="640" height="360">

it's about 1:30pm, we've ridden about 120miles since morning. We're about 20 miles from Packwood, and life is good.

bikes are humming, the weather is fabulous, and we're having a grand time.

    <object width="640" height="360" ><param name="movie" value="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2009090604.swf" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="flashVars" value="s=ZT0xJmk9Njg4MjEzOTA3Jms9b0FvVU4mYT05NzcwNzY1X3FwenlaJnU9MTAwMTI=" /><embed src="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2009090604.swf" flashVars="s=ZT0xJmk9Njg4MjEzOTA3Jms9b0FvVU4mYT05NzcwNzY1X3FwenlaJnU9MTAwMTI=" width="640" height="360" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true"></embed></object>

We're now on some wider, graded, DUSTY roads. We're moving along pretty good, and I'm tucked behind LDF, flanking her behind, and slightly to her left. As we get closer and closer to Packwood, we start to pass some vehicles parked on the side of the road, and she starts to get VERY concerned for my safety. :rolleyes

Our "discussion" ( :pain) escalates unitl...
