Have your wife shoot LDF a PM if she has any questions. Wimmen riders tend to be supportive and encouraging of each other, unlike us men who at best will belch in the general direction of, and at worst will tea-bag the seat of noob riders.

On M6, LDF was shooting with the G11, and I was using the Lumix TS-2 from the bike, and the Leica M9 with either a 15mm f4.5, 50mm f2, or 90mm f2.8 lens when stopped, or walking around. If it isn't obvious, check the EXIF data on each photo to figure out which camera was used for which shot. If you're using Firefox, an easy way to do that is to use the add-on extension "EXIF viewer" and right click on the image.

Since we've gotten back, we upgraded the G11 for the S95. The S95 is easier to use, and definitely a pocketable camera. It's limited in that it doesn't accept a hot-shoe flash, but that's about it (edit-- the S95 also doesn't have the built-in ND filter). The manual controls are much better with the lens ring (not sure if that's been incorporated into the G12?) It's a great camera to grab and go, decent at low light, and shoots raw.

You're probably right... though I prefer to think of them as mutant cannibal zombie bees. :dunno

the big long scary single-lane bridge:

There was a pick-up truck stopped in the middle of the bridge. Even though the signs said no stopping on the bridge. It turned out to be a State of Alaska vehicle. Is it completely lawless up here, or what?

    <object width="640" height="360" ><param name="movie" value="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2010102501.swf" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="flashVars" value="s=ZT0xJmk9MTA4MjgyNDQwMCZrPXBjVVhDJmE9MTM1MDA5MjBfbXM0YWkmdT0xMDAxMg==" /><embed src="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2010102501.swf" flashVars="s=ZT0xJmk9MTA4MjgyNDQwMCZrPXBjVVhDJmE9MTM1MDA5MjBfbXM0YWkmdT0xMDAxMg==" width="640" height="360" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true"></embed></object>

So I figured if they stopped, I could stop too. Here are the photos:

In defense of my Mexican friends, this looks more like Homer Simpson work.

What surprises me is that there's still so much of the place still standing. AK winters are the worst and the summers aren't always much better. I guess it had the most modern hospital north of Seattle back in the day, better than what was in Anchorage.

Mrs Miniroot bought me Jiffypop for Christmas, after me seeing another photo of you guys carrying it, and me commenting what a great idea it was for motorcycle camping -- entertainment and deliciousness. Had to import it from the US and everything.

She got a phonecall from the Ministry of Agriculture biosecurity people a week before Christmas, telling her that they couldn't allow it to be imported unless they heat-treated it first.

    :rofl

Keep up the excellent RR, guys.

That's too funny! :lol3 I gotta say, After 3000 miles on the back of the bike, I would have cracked it open in a heartbeat if we needed to. Say, for instance, to repack wheel bearings with some heavy weight grease. :nod

Jiffy Pop is a way better sponsor than Jiffy Lube, or even BMW. :thumb

Just don't never eat the stuff. :nono

loving that the report is continuing, i'm sure the break was a good reset - it can get hard posting to a report day after day with such stunning photos.

I admit to not doing much of anything else for the past week or so reading the RR from the beginning to now!! Incredible!! I admit to being a slabber only (heavy tourers don't do well off-road, as I've found out!!) but now I'm re-thinking the whole thing!! Thank you for a completely different perspective than what I had previously. I can't wait for the next installments.
Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!
(Also got me through one major snowstorm reading about riding!!)

that we were running out of dirt, (not just for this trip, but for most of the next as well)

Even though the weather was kinda lousy, we were soaking in the scenery,

Every once in a while, we'd see sunlight dappling a mountainside,

or a patch of blue sky, and that was enough to keep our spirits up.

excursions feel like rewinding a DVD on the return trip.

Still, it's a different ride in the opposite direction. Past the 4-mile, 3-mile etc. lakes

I noticed a couple walking on the side of the road with fishing poles, and tried to see if it was Sarah P, I mean, there are only so many people up here... it was pretty inevitable that we'd run into her.
