    at the same time the coastal mountains rise.

    [IMG]

    Which gives the impression that the earth is physically rising towards the sky on either side of the road, looming over you as you ride.

    [IMG]

    And then there are the glaciers;

    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    <object width="640" height="360" ><param name="movie" value="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2010102501.swf" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="flashVars" value="s=ZT0xJmk9MTA4MjU2NjMyNCZrPTJFWHNLJmE9MTM1MDA5MjBfbXM0YWkmdT0xMDAxMg==" /><embed src="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2010102501.swf" flashVars="s=ZT0xJmk9MTA4MjU2NjMyNCZrPTJFWHNLJmE9MTM1MDA5MjBfbXM0YWkmdT0xMDAxMg==" width="640" height="360" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true"></embed></object>

    It's kinda hard to keep your eyes on the road.

    I mean, they look big in the distance, then you get up closer to them, and they're even bigger than you thought!

    topics in this episode: why I choose to video glaciers, and a broken water main.

    It was also getting chilly.

    There always seem to be little lakes up near the top, this was no exception:

    there's a single switchback, and then a long downhill coast to the coast.

    it really is up there with the great classic motorcycle rides. If you're in the neighborhood, don't miss it. (not that there's any other way to get from Tonsina to Valdez)

    If ever there was an example of America's failing infrastructure, it's got to be Alaska's failing plumbing system. Ruptured water mains everywhere. :wink:

    First thing we did was check in to the ferry:

    [IMG]

    "Heightened risk of attack" equals 1? Will it ever be anything less?

    We drove around town a couple times scoping out the hotel options, and settled on the closest one to the ferry terminal, The Keystone... from the frommer's review:

    "
    This basic budget hotel, made of modular units, was built by Exxon to serve as its offices for the oil-spill cleanup operation but wasn't completed until late summer 1989, so the company occupied it for only about a month. It stood vacant for 5 years before a new owner remodeled it into a hotel, with small rooms that mostly have two twin beds or one double bed, though some have two doubles."

    Other reviews are less enthusiastic. Much less. Personally, I loved the industrial modular retro-futuristic sci-fi Barton Fink vibe. :norton

    [IMG]

    Once we got our room, we discovered the yellowjackets under our blackjackets. :bluduh

    [IMG]

    It was about 6:30pm, so we set out to take a walk around town, shoot some photos, and find some fresh seafood for dinner. :kbasa

    what seemed to be the most popular joint on the waterfront for seafood...

    [IMG]

    It was OK, everything was smothered in melted butter, how bad can that be?

    You know I was just thinking that while I enjoy the videos and commentary therein I really missed the great pics from past trips. This is a great example. That said, however you do it I'll read and look. Thanks for taking the time to share.

    John

    BTW You need to check out DockingPilot's Forever West thread. It would make a killer Mobius trip.

    I might have missed it somewhere, but I have to think you are carrying a better camera with you, on this leg of the trip?? I have read all of the Mobius RR's, and this one has the best shots by far.
