Moving along, with new motivation (:evil).

Fantastic scenery... but damn. Straight, paved roads. :cry Riding past the Kluane national park:

    <iframe frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="640" height="360" src="http://api.smugmug.com/services/embed/1330914647_wGjd4KS?width=640&height=360"></iframe>

    <embed src="http://media1.nfb.ca/medias/flash/ONFflvplayer-gama.swf" width="516" height="337" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="mID=IDOBJ404&image=http://media1.nfb.ca/medias/nfb_tube/thumbs_large/2008/kluane.jpg&width=516&height=337&showWarningMessages=false&streamNotFoundDelay=15&lang=en&getPlaylistOnEnd=true&embeddedMode=true"></embed>

Clearly, the best way to see the spectacular natural wonders of this area is NOT from a paved road on a motorbike. You've got to hike or fly or kayak or dogsled in there. We're just spectators on the sidelines otherwise. :dunno

Nice and sunny... but still pretty chilly. :vardy

I imagine the weather can turn on a dime up here.

    down into Haines Junction.

We thought about camping, but this looked so unappealing...

that we got a room at the Alcan motel, and called it a day.

    a quick dinner:

    some chores,

and off to bed not long after 10pm:

    Nearly 300miles for the day.

The weather continued to agree with us:

The Alaska highway goes on like this for HOURS.

Morning video update: I'd forgotten that we rode past Pine Lake campground 4 miles out of Haines Jct. No worries, it was 48F when we woke up, and we'd gone to bed chilled.

The monotony is punctuated with wildlife sightings -- these two apparently escaped from the North Pole:

    Still straight, paved roads...

still trying to keep ourselves entertained with giant caterpillar and other wildlife sightings.

And then the big excitement of the day -- off-road riding, and then some open-grate action :evil.

    the usual; road construction...

    open, empty roads...

the poor kids up here can't afford spray paint. They have to use rocks.

we neglected to string the pan and plates (clean) up in the bear bag, so I rigged up a bear/critter alarm:

Somehow, a campfire just isn't quite right when it's this light out at 10pm. :bluduh

Doc, can you bring bear pepper spray into Canada and Alaska, or do you have to purchase it in Country (Canada)?

This turned out to be a nice day riding -- decent weather, signpost park, buffalo (or in the Canadian metric system, Bison), crossing the Rockies, the bizarrely blue Muncho Lake, and other sights. We woke up, however, a bit wet:

    <iframe src="http://api.smugmug.com/services/embed/1330912770_njQ2DwG?width=640&height=360" frameborder="0" height="360" scrolling="no" width="640"></iframe>

It wasn't far to Watson Lake, where we decided to see the signpost park, and dry out for a bit, maybe have some breakfast.

to the signpost park, and you're in the neighborhood, don't pass it by. :thumb

I thought it was going to be a smallish, kitchy touristy thing... But it's actually HUGE -- it goes on and on and on and on. Still kitchy and touristy, but kinda impressive. :huh
