    these little mayflies were horrendous. They were so thick, I thought I was going to suffocate. We couldn't even talk to each other on the intercoms, 'cause you'd get a mouthfull of bugs. :puke2

    and slowly the sky started to clear, and the temps warmed up.

    we got our first glimpse of the Edmonton skyline (on the right of the photo below):

    stayed with us for a couple of days at The AdventureLoft™ July 2010 on his cross-continent trip.

    He'd generously offered to put us up if we ever were anywhere near Edmonton. If he knew then what he knows now. :lol3

    These bikes aren't garage-queens by any means, but it still felt good to get them clean. :D

    We figured that was enough for the day, we'd let the bikes dry off overnight, and sat down to an incredible dinner of grilled filet mignon roast.

    I wonder how many anti-chain oiler folks are going to weigh in on your comments? :ear My vote would be to toss them and replace the chain every 8000 miles.

    So where is the next trip? Any plans for Montana?

    That's what I was doing before trying out the chain oiler. Worked pretty good, until it didn't. :deal I'm gonna give a gear review for this trip, and what we're going to tweak in M8 in a little bit. :wink:

    The next trip, M8 launches Sept. 9th. Originating in Edmonton, and terminating in Idaho Falls Sept. 25. I'll get into the details as soon as I wrap up this long-overdue M7 write-up. Plans for Montana? Short answer: yes. Longer answer: but not quite yet. :1drink

    This was our big maintenance and wrenching day. :lift

    We got right to it. New tires were waiting -- MT-21 rears, and Desert IT fronts:

    Oil changes and filter cleaning all around. Dave is planning a big ride to Central/South America, and prepping his DR650, so we spent the afternoon working on the bikes, and swapping notes, hints, and stories.

    Based on other's experiences, I thought our wheel bearings were getting a bit long in tooth, and decided to swap them out. I had one full set with me, and Dave has connections at the local moto shop/dealer (great shop!) where I scored another complete OEM set. The front's were a piece of cake with the bearing tool he had,

    but the rears were a sumbitch to get out. :bluduh

    We moved on to new sprocket

    and chain swaps.

    and finally, I replaced the rear brake pads on Honeybee that got neglected back in Anchorage the last time those got love.

    Well, after the massive failure we had at removing the rear wheel bearings, we called in the cavalry, and brought the wheels over to the guys at Riverside, who squeezed us into their busy walk-in repair saturday schedule.

    While the pros were working on pulling & pressing bearings, we brainstormed M8 routes,

    did laundry and sorted out gear, took a trip to the dump, and had a lovely brunch at Dave's mom's house with his kids and extended family.

    Dave's daughter, Ashley is an artist, studying photography, so I bored her to tears talking about the M9. :bore But she knows her stuff, and is destined for greatness.

    Dave and Wanitta schlepped us to the airport, bless them, and we basically spent the day flying home.

    It was a noticeably shorter trip home from Edmonton than it was to Anchorage. It really gave us the sense that we'd done some traveling -- moved ourselves and our bikes across the land.

    We got a cab home from the airport, and as good as a Mobius adventure is... it's always good to be home.

    So it occurred to me that we've been doing this long enough... (2 week trips X 7) covering over 20k miles, that we can probably make some gear endorsements -- things that work well for us, for our style of travel.

    While I still update and distribute our comprehensive gear list in all it's OCD-Excel spreadsheet glory to anyone who asks (and PM's me their email address), in order to make it onto this exclusive list here of things we absolutely LOVE, the items must be unquestioningly functional, rugged, dependable, well designed, and well made... supremely lightweight, simple, and field serviceable as appropriate. The stuff here ain't necessarily cheap, in fact, more often than not it's downright pricey, but we still consider theses things a good value. Why? 'Cause they WORK. :deal

    LDF may have some items to add, and I may edit the list. There are tons of other items that we use, but none that make us happy like these things do straight out of the box (with occasional modifications). The things on this list are items that I'd replace with the exact same thing if we were to lose the ones we have. They are go-to choices that work for us on Mobius. They might not be the best choices for a day trip, or a RTW voyage. We've received no compensation, support or donations from any of these companies. We've always been honest and upfront about our corporate sponsors... TKC-90's, and JiffyPop to date. That's it so far, and you may notice that neither of those products made the cut. :brow

    The first post of this thread has been updated with links to various parts of M7, (including the "Gear we LOVE" post above).

    Also, I've attached a .GPX file of the day's tracks to each of the "Day's stats" posts. You can download and open in Mapsource, BaseCamp, or GooglEarth to see exactly which roads we took.

    I've also added each trip's cumulative tracks and waypoint files to this thread. I also uploaded the files to Dualsportmaps.com, so if you're a member there, search "Mobius" for the complete boxed set.

    Also, any photos that were taken while the GPS was tracking have been geo-tagged. You'll have to find your way to the original on our smugmug account to link to the co-ordinates.

    Just installed a new chain after 6k or so and dumped the ScottOiler I had installed http://www.scottoiler.com/us/Kits/Scottoiler-vSystem-CARB-EO/flypage.tpl.html .Not to impune the product because it does work. I found it to be a messy bit that required watching to not run dry but created a Valdez's level clean up every trip. I find it easier to install a new o-ring chain more often and clean/inspect/spray lube for maintenance. Just my $.02

    Going back and re-reading a post I made just after riding M7, I'd observed that after awhile, all long trips seem to shift from being about the challenges of riding and navigating and camping, to being more about the social interactions along the way. I'd wondered if we'd experience that shift, given that our "long" trip is broken up into sections. At the time, I threw out there an open invite to anyone who wanted to join us and roll Mobius-style for a part or all of our next ride.

    Well, I'm happy to announce that M8 will be the first time that Team Mobius will have more than two riders. Previously, we've been escorted out of our point of origin a few of times -- the first by the mighty Todd in Albuquerque, then by DeanO and his merry band out of Reno, and GaryAK at the start of M6. And we've been intercepted by Travis in BC, and met Tim & John and Chi along the way from Eagle Plains and we rode with them for a bit... but we've never had extended travel companions on Mobius.

    If all goes as planned, we'll be joined by Dave(AlbertaStrom) on a DR650, and Ron on a 990. It isn't clear yet how far they'll ride, but it'll more than a day. Soooo I'll let them introduce themselves, and invite them to post up in the Mobius Trip thread here whatever they like.

    The invitation still stands, if anyone wants to intercept our route along the way and join in the ride, you'll have to PM me your email and I'll send a .gpx file of our route. Then you'll have to follow along on our Spotwalla page to see where we are, and try your best to flag us down. I don't anticipate that we'll have very reliable cell/internet communication once we're underway, so that's the best we can offer.

    Here's a general description and bird's eye view of what we're taking on...

    We'll be leaving from St. Albert, AB -- near Edmonton on Saturday (or Sunday) Sept. 10-11. The bikes are totally refreshed and ready. We'll head west into the foothills of the rockies, on dirt forest & pipeline roads, winding our way to Hinton, AB where we'll pick up pavement and cruise down the Icefields Parkway to Banff. We'll then cut across the Kootenays in BC (some paved, some dirt), and cross the border into NE Washington at Nelway. From there, we will be on dirt, with increasing levels of difficulty. 'Bout 800 miles to this point. Then, we will ride into Idaho, and pick up the north end of the route that Martin Hackworth(motorcyclejazz) has heroically assembled, (and graciously distributes gps tracks without compensation :clap) called the Tour of Idaho.

    According to The Rules, for a rider to claim they've ridden the Tour of Idaho, they must obtain 60 or more challenge points. Because we still have residual self-preservation instincts, we will be skipping the Pete King trail, the Oxford Basin, and the Massacre Mountain loop sections, and because we will not be riding all the way down to the ID/UT border and instead looping up to Idaho Falls as our end destination, the MOST number of challenge points that we will be able to obtain will be 51. If we add in additional style points that we will likely earn (+3), we will still fall pathetically short of claiming to have ridden the Tour of Idaho :cry. So...

    We will be referring to M8 as the "Mobius Tura ID'oh" (or Tura I:doh for short). :wink: No disrespect intended.

    Total M8 trip distance will be just shy of 2400miles, and I anticipate all sorts of adventure, from cowboy camping to wildlife to wildfires to re-routes to technical riding to weather. I'm guessing it's gonna be like the most challenging parts of the TAT (what we called the "special" sections), without very many of the easier "transit" sections.

    We've got a bit over a week to finish planning and packing, and then it's game on. :clap
