I've been working on catching up on this report since July and now that I've made it, I feel guilty proclaiming my status in the face of the Sandy disaster. What I will say is that we've been through more than one hurricane down this way and I think it is hard to imagine the extent of the mess unless you've experienced it. Disasters can bring out the best in people and it is amazing what can be accomplished in a short amount of time. We are all pulling for all of you.
What a strange disaster it has been. Thank you for your thoughts. I want to preface this by stating unequivocally that by rights, we have nothing to complain about. Others in the area have suffered (and continue to suffer) FAR more than we have. The best I can describe our situation, or at least mine is that it has been majorly "unsettling". It's crazy how much our metal stability is tied to simple routine. Without the normalcy of things you usually depend on, life becomes surreal.
Bellevue and NYU hospitals are still shut down, probably until early February. Recovery and re-deployment has been difficult and frustrating. Not working is NOT the same as vacation. It's a bit more stressful, to say the least. My department, friends and colleagues, my team and our patients have been split up and sent to different hospitals across the city. We've been struggling to get credentialed, and are getting set up to clear the backlog of surgical procedures for our Bellevue patients.
Paradoxically, now that my days are busy again (and structured), I'm finding the mojo to continue the ride report. Sorry for the delay, but while riding season is closing down... writing season is just getting fired up.
Today's route would be pretty straight forward. Heading south, where the weather suits our clothes. You've already heard about the sprinkler drama... we were up mighty early,
and managed to stay pretty dry. Since we didn't have access to any, um, facilities, we decided to grab a quick breakfast and coffee at the cafe.
They're known for their pies,
and once again, we were treated to a slice...

and we had wheels rolling by around 9am. We could always tell when there was wildlife around, 'cause Scott would slow down or stop. He's got an eye for that kind of stuff. Here's a buck:

Our intercoms weren't connecting, so we had a comic moment

At Melstone, we gassed up at Jake's
between Melstone and Custer
we crossed the Yellowstone river, just before we hit I-94 at Custer,
Is it just me, or does the water level look really low?
In order to cross the Bighorn river, we had to hop on the innerstate for one exit. ONE. At Custer we were supposed to take a frontage road to the next interchange, get on, and get off at the next one. Apparently, though, if you have a WR250R, you actually like to ride innerstate -- The Big Dog in front was navigating so perfectly up to this point, I refuse to believe it was an oversight that he jumped on the innerstate at Custer and made us ride it for two whole exits.

Wonderful news on the return to near normality. East coasters are too tough to stay down for long. Keep up the good fight.
closer to the "Coal" of Colstrip, land use got a little tighter. We had a re-route, and then tied in to a bigger dirt road... there were some cool rock formations,
In the distance we could see the heavy metal that digs the dirt,
we gassed up, and got a couple of rooms at a motel. This would be our rendezvous with the next member of the Mobius team...
MTRider, Dave W! Our local ringer. We set him up with his anti-hassle tassels... and he gave us our requested replacement spare rear tube... and for Dingweeds, a very much appreciated new visor to replace the one he scratched in his crash.
We enjoyed some local wildlife, had some dinner, and got some showers.
It was a pretty awesome day.
