it started to get really rough:

Fortunately it was slow going, because there was the mother of all washouts:

Can you imagine the force of water that moved all this earth and debris? Impressive.

    when backtracking isn't so bad.

    pretty but paved,

We stopped at the Ranger's station and got some intel. They didn't think the road we wanted to take through the park (Pleasant creek) would be passable. No one had tried since the floods. We figured we'd give it a try, and picked up a backcountry permit in case we had to camp in there.

The main part of the road through the park is paved. For cars & campers it's an in-and-out, with some side trails which were currently closed because of the damage.

We'd gotten pulled over by the ranger because they couldn't read our plates. I'd forgotten that too.

    <iframe frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="640" height="360" src="http://api.smugmug.com/services/embed/2806299985_pxMTK24?width=640&height=360&albumId=32237510&albumKey=R5DXC4"></iframe>

I could see stopping for a day and hiking. Kinda crowded though.

We get to the corral that is the turnaround for normal people, and I go ahead to scout conditions.

I thought I took a nice video to show Francine what she'd missed, but I must not have pushed the right button. Basically is was like trying to ride upstream of a creek. Wasn't gonna happen. So we headed out the way we came. :cry

These guys were a big hit with the tourists:

paved go-around. Oh well. Lowered expectations, remember?

From the Department of Every Land Feature Must Be Named: Guess what this one is called?

We pulled in to Singletree campground in the Dixie NF.

    Worst. Night. Ever.

Screaming kids, and a LOUD generator that didn't cut off until like 11pm.

God, I'm getting a headache just remembering it. :baldy

Dixie NF - Hell's Backbone - Escalante - Skunk creek (East Fork Servier River)

    Crystal clear morning,

Wasn't long before we got to the Hell's Backbone turnoff at Boulder.

(Click photo below for a bigger image to read the text)

it's an easy road, with great views,

The highlight really is the bridge,

    <iframe frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="640" height="360" src="http://api.smugmug.com/services/embed/2806302529_T8tjCS2?width=640&height=360&albumId=32237510&albumKey=R5DXC4"></iframe>

only the part near the bridge is paved,

    <iframe frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="640" height="360" src="http://api.smugmug.com/services/embed/2806301214_64T9pHK?width=640&height=360&albumId=32237510&albumKey=R5DXC4"></iframe>

    the rest looks like this:

We restocked adult beverages in Escalante,

and also ran into Mr. Motorcycle, same as the last time we were here. What are the odds of that? :lol3

    (I'm guessing pretty good). :deal

It's fall, remember. Don't let all the greenery fool you.

Tom's Best Spring road was a pretty section. Fast & dry.

following the East Fork of the Servier river.

There are tons of little side roads and ATV trails, but only one that cuts up and out of the valley which we were aiming to take over to Hatch.

    Of course. :2cry

We checked the maps, and decided that we'd loop back down to the main road, and find a place to camp as it was getting late, and this seemed like it had a lot of opportunities.

We thought about this spot, but it was pretty exposed, high elevation, and no water.

Instead, we found this spot down a side trail, a reservoir off Skunk creek.

Sweet! I went back up the road where we'd seen lots of deadfall to pick up some nice dry firewood,

    and we set up camp.

I tried to troubleshoot LDF's turn signal which was blinking as flashers after wiring in the new VaporTech speedo console.

(Turns out it needed a couple of diodes which I picked up in Vegas and wired in before storing the bike)

We had cocktails and appetizers -- i'm gonna have to remember this one:

Sushi rolls made of cream cheese, smoked salmon, and wrapped in a flour tortilla. :yum

Once the sun set, it got chilly pretty quickly,

But we had warm clothes, and a nice cozy campfire.

    Skink Creek - Pace Draw

This was a fun day. I remember it was windy as all get out. I mean rip your hair from the roots windy.

Really, only one real re-route, and a couple of navigational coup's.

    <iframe frameborder="0" scrolling="no" width="640" height="360" src="http://api.smugmug.com/services/embed/2806301825_RwMxNp9?width=640&height=360&albumId=32237510&albumKey=R5DXC4"></iframe>

We started the day with a little backtrack and pavement,

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

and then the first special section of the day. :evil

    and this was it:

    Muddy hill climb,

    Rock garden,

    Victory! It went through.

to get to the next highlight,

(that's LDF riding her own bike through the tough stuff) :clap

    More obstacles,

to get to the Lava Desert!

[edit: I found some info on the lava field here. Markagunt plateau, probably dormant, last erupted 1050AD.]

of pavement... this is looking south down the Deep Creek watershed that joins to the Virgin River and flows through Zion NP.

Next special section... well dirt anyway.

We didn't believe it... the maps had it going through. :deal

    It was SO frickin' windy!

    AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!

We stopped for a snack, but there were so many branches falling from the trees, we put our helmets back on and hightailed it out of there.

took us around Cedar & Lone Tree Mt's., then across some really windy flats, and finally up and over Kanarra mountain with breathtaking views down into Cedar City. :thumb Highly recommended!

    The windy flats:

And then the view from the other side -- I-15 is down in the valley:

What's funny is that the "Highway over yonder with our name on it" turned out to be just more two-track but with a number on the map... "Hwy 144" I think. :lol3 (Francine wasn't laughing then, I tell you what.) :nono

we just said "enough" and found a nice side trail to a flat spot with a view and called it a day.

    a little snack,

a little hike to see the world from the highest point we could find:

    yet another quiet cowboy camp,

    Elk tracks everywhere,

As the sun was going down, this brilliant splotch of red caught my eye... I went closer to check it out, and it was a single ray of sun shining down on this deep red flower. I couldn't take my eyes off it. It was sublime. Burning bush?

Very nice !! Great photos as usual :clap

Do you have the gpx for Möbius 12 ? My son goes to UNLV and this would be a great side trip when I go out to visit. I just have to find a bike rental place.
