for lugging an engine and going slow.
which was stated in the article. avg was around 60-70mpg.
i gotta say, i dont care about mpg that much, the ninja 300 looks like a lot of fun for a very reasonable price.

Frustrating experience. Denial of the bike I came to the store interested in and no interest from them in showing me any of the bikes in stock. Since I came on my bike I assumed someone would have been more than interested in trying to get me onto another bike.
Anyone drive one home yet? First hand knowledge of the new Ninja 300 would be great to read about.
So, any word yet on the valve adjustment and oil change intervals? After the holidays I will be picking up either this or a crf250l, and the little things like this may make the difference.
Also, what is the release date?

Then all you'd get to see is how ugly the bike really is with all of it's strewn everywhere wires/hoses that the lazy engineers couldn't be bothered to package nicely.

F.W.I.W. I Love my TU250X for 1 basic reason.
Anyone can turn it into anything they want it to be. Cafe racer, bobber, cruiser, chopper...almost anything.
I choose to keep mine as a standard and eqip it with a windshield and saddle bags as a practical commuter/mini-tourer. (now if only Zuki would make a 400CC P-Twin version for better highway safety, when the need arises to maintain 80mph to keep from getting run over when going up hill)
I honestly couldn't see logging the 12-15+ thousand miles a year that I currently do, on a bike that I'd have to use a backpack with, that also lacks any real weather protection and have a quick steering geometry that would send my ass down on the road at the first sign of a slick patch of snow.
Sometimes I'm almost envious of all the weekend wariors who don't NEED a practcal bike, because they don't accumulate serious miles on them. (that said, I do respect those who manage major miles on their poseur bikes)
...But is it still a poseur bike if they are actually riding it?
I still want a TU250. But I bought Fiat Abarth this year so the wife said no more toys
I don't know the maintenance schedule for the Valve Checks on the new Ninja 300. On the 250r's I believe it was every 7000 miles for a Valve Check and Oil Changes (or once a year for oil). If it helps, I did ask the dealer the cost of adjusting the valves on the Ninja 250r and it was $175.
They are released NOW. Well, in small number at least. The rumor that I read is the bulk of the new bikes should be in show rooms by November.
And in line with the older 250 as well. My gf just did a decent ride and squeeked out 100mpg on her 06.
Perhaps I should clarify that I don't mean "poseur" in a negative way = merely someone/something that fits into a definitive image.
So...the bike might be a "poseur" model but the owner a REAL Rider.
So y'all think the new 2013 Ninja 300R looks better than my '07 ZZ-R250?
LOL!! Actually I think the new 300R is dead sexy! Can't wait to get a chance to see one up close and have a test-sit!! Could be my next Ride with any luck!
I sat on a white N-300 at a dealer this morning (Concord, CA). Really nice looking bike. Muffler has a trick-looking stainless heat shield. Tail is more like a sportbike than the N250. $4799. The dealer had two white ones come in yesterday. No ABS bikes shipped yet.
As was said earlier, they're going to sell a metric butt-load of these. I mentioned to the salesman (whom I know) that he would have trouble selling the CBR250R's parked next to it on the floor. He said, "Nah. Some people want a Honda and that's that." Probably true...
All I have to say about this bike is that it has EFI, and therefore I love it more than what it replaced.
I can't wait until a few years from now when I can get a used one of these for a grand and not have to deal with finicky carbs. Then all I'll need to do it put on new sprockets to gear it taller.
(I am big on hypermiling. This would be the perfect bike for riding out to my fiancee's house when there is zero traffic for 60 miles on low speed roads. Sitting at 50 MPH I get 70MPG on my VStrom, imagine what this thing would give me!)
Interesting. Throughout most of the US, you've never been able to buy a Ninja 250 that runs and has not been wrecked for under $1,800. (Maybe the current economy has broken this rule, but it won't last forever.) One of the best reasons to buy one as a new rider is that you can sell it and get your money back. Good luck finding a running 300R for $1,000 anywhere, anytime in NA.

...only if they give it some real suspension travel. (unlike the Versys) They could stuff the 300 into a older klr250 type frame with a stouter suspension.

I saw one in person today when I dropped off my kid to pick up a 2012 250. It's a nice evolution from the 12s. The last obvious ode to cheapness is the rear brake pedal, still stamped steel with ugly holes punched in it. The clutch lever pull is noticably lighter and the lines work better. It was sitting next to 2 12s and a CBR250r. It easily blows them both away in pure looks. It is much more a solid looking "real" bike than the 12 and far and away beyond the CBR. My opinion only. The wheels and tires are proportionate to the body. It'll not look far out of place among 600-1000s on the road or parked among friends, tghat should be a huge draw to younger new riders.
The passenger pad has gotten thinner, the ergos seem the same. A few pieces crossed over unchanged. The dash is decent looking too. Sitting on one wouldn't be a bad place to be. Wonder how they run.
My guess would be, pretty good.
I have an ex500 (Ninja 500) that has a claimed 59 HP and weighs about 440 lbs (7.46 lbs/HP). The Ninja 300 has a 39 HP and weighs about 380 lbs from what I can find on the internet (9.74 lbs/HP). So, acceleration wise it may not be as quick as the old 500, but it will probably out handle it anywhere with curves due to the 60 fewer pounds and much improved suspension.
All in all, I think this is going to be just as big of a success for Kawasaki as the 250 (as long as cost doesn't hinder people from buying it).
Kinda hard to get exited about this when it weighs nearly 400 pounds. I had a 93 Ducati 750 that weighed 368.
