    The Bolt. For Dolts.

    I should work in advertising.

Now don't go getting all riled up. What the world needs now is a yet another remake of a Rooster. With added plastic.

Hummph........anyone have an opinion on why the US bikes are badged as Star?

Is Star a US affiliate thats non-existent in the EU and Asia.

Any other major brands have a sub brand for a select class of bikes.

Companies pay millions for market research and make decisions based on research findings. Wonder if Yamaha felt the Star brand would ultimately sell more bikes in the US than the same bike badged Yamaha.

Fwiw, I'm not a HD fanboy or Yamaha hater, when the MT-09 Triple arrives I'm going to take a serious look at selling the XR1200 and buying a MT-09 if the test ride is positive.

Think about Acura, Lexus, Lincoln, Cadillac, Infinity, etc.

If you have a premium brand or want to differentiate features of a separately badged group of product, you can give it a different name to differentiate it.

In the bike market the Japanese manufacturers work against the idea that their stuff is quality but not necessarily acceptable socially. So, Yamaha made Star to sort of combat that market bias against their product.

Suzuki did a similar thing with their Boulevard line.

    The American market is weird.

What, you missed the big "Yamaha" on the Bolt in several places?

You wouldn't have if you'd bother to look. Derp. :1drink

I like the classic Yamaha type on the tank. My dad had an old 175 two stroke Yamaha and it had the same lettering.

I might have to add that as a decal.

Yamaha first came up with the Star name in '96, with the Royal Star. It is not a premium brand, any more than Suzuki's Boulevard line is. It includes the lowly V-Star 650 and V-Star 250, formerly the Virago 250, and before that the Route 66. It appears Yamaha just didn't want a Japanese name on a Harley clone. Funny how everything they make that doesn't have a v-twin still says Yamaha on it.

I was once the proud owner of a 1980 YAMAHA XS1100 Special. What a bike. It really saddens me that Yamaha no longer has any pride in their name. Call it what it is. I'm old enough to still remember the "Someday you'll own a Yamaha" commercials. I currently own 3, and a parts bike. No "Stars" though. Two scooters and a dual sport.

Aside from Boulevard, your examples are with autos and the question was regarding bikes. Plus Suzuki advertises those bikes as "Suzuki Boulevard" with both words spelled out on the tank emblem, albeit the Bouvelard script is larger than the Suzuki.

Just for discussion, is an Infinity, Lexus, or Acura marketed and sold in the EU or Asia as a Nissan, Toyota, or Honda or do they maintain the luxury marquee throughout the world?

I don't have a problem with Yamaha developing and marketing a luxo line but if its a Royal Star in the US why is it not a Royal Star in the EU?

Wired American market, or trying to look more like it's competition with a more Americanized name?

I'm 90% certain Infinity, Lexus and Acura only exist in the American market.

Infiniti maybe, but the other two are widely available elsewhere.

    So?

Go pick up the phone and call Star if you want some in depth marketing reasons. I answered your question, but I'm not going to waste another 20 minutes I'll never get back giving you an answer you'll blow off.

If you want to talk about the Bolt, I'm game. You know, like how if they make that decal for other markets then you could easily buy it, have it shipped to your door, and put it on your Bolt, staunching the flow of butthurt.

I am still laughing at that.

I love the Bolt; next year I am going to buy one for my wife's first motorcycle. She is waiting for the next improved version to come out.

How do the rankings work around here boys? I am an 'adventurer' and the other guys with lots of posts go up from that...but then I see some truly spectacular rankings: 'Epic Douche Bags', 'Hegelian Scum', etc...

How many people do I have to kill to get attain such a rank?:D

I saw a Bolt in person yesterday and I thought it looked good.
Yeah , the little silver bits on the exhaust were a little cheesy looking, but not bad enough to be a deal breaker .
