The route goes from the west coast to central PA.

It is targeted at Adventure / Dual Sport bikes with optional sections that are harder.
It is on the scale of the Trans America Trail. Ride at your own risk.

This portion of the route goes from the eastern edge of Iowa to the eastern edge of Ohio.

The section to the west of here is - The Northern Route - Plains - http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1043304

The section to the east of here is - The Northern Route - East - http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1066585

As far as I know all roads are legal Public roads - Forest Service, county, state, etc. Off pavement as much as possible.

Note - the tracks are raw tracks containing LOTS of track points.
You may well have to filter these tracks down for some units.

I would like to download this gpx file, however, when I open it all I get is hundreds of pages of text.

This is a common problem for new users, it's discussed around here in several threads.
Internet explorer is most likely the problem, in Firefox you right click it, then select save or open in Mapsource.
Another option is to tell Windows what program is normally used for GPX files, that way Windows knows how to open it.

Ah ok. I'm trying to open it on an iPhone and it appears I'm up the creek. Could you possibly give me some pointers on how I can import this file into motion x on my iPhone?

edit: disregard. I finally got it figured out.

    Hey NorthernTraveler,

I started this route a few days back in Iowa and will cross into Ohio tomorrow. Many thanks for this, it has been a great ride and the tracks are working wonderfully.

Glad to hear somebody is actually riding it.
Western Ohio is kinda flat, but found some hills in central OH and eastern OH is a treat running through the Amish areas.
    Glad you are enjoying it!

Really looking forward to riding this. I have been watching for a good while. Looking at the pictures I recognized the 23 station - about 10 miles from my house-guess I am really running out of excuses. Thanks for doing this.

If it opens another webpage and is saved as "NR%20Midwest%20Release.gpx.txt" it's a problem that can be corrected by opening the saved file in Notepad and deleting the first line that begins with
<?xml ... then resave with the .gpx extension not the .txt extension and it will be recognized as a .gpx file that will open in Mapsource, Basecamp, whatever you are using to view and edit .gpx files on your Windows computer. This is a problem with a WIndows computer running a variety of browsers including Chrome, Internet Explorer, and yes even Firefox at times. Just telling WIndows to open a .gpx file with Mapsource or Basecamp won't do it. It has to do with gpx and xml data being very much the same.

I occasionally have reason to ride from SE Iowa to Columbus, Ohio. You have no idea how much I appreciate this! Can't wait to ride it!

Dropbox changed things and broke my links to everything.
I'm made new links to the DOC, GPX, and GDB files.
Trying to figure out how to fix the pictures.
