    Excuse my ignorance as im a Norton newb but is the top an Atlas? or is SS a version of?
    For some reason I am way drawn to the industrial- utilitarian look of the gray colors....

    The Atlas was the 750cc version, but looks near identical to the 650SS and the last of the 650s, the Mercury, all of which were the linear descendants of the 500/600cc Dominator series.

    The 99 was a 600,a 600SS is pretty rare. That one has a Commando front brake and a single carb too.

    In this photo around 1980, the first red Norton is my 99, SS'd with cam, pistons and twin carbs, and also a Commando front brake. The 2nd Norton with the fairing is a Mercury. The rigid Triumph is my wife's T100....she called it that, but only the crankcase was. Built from parts by herself. The blue '54 T100 is owned by my life's mentor.

    Yes, just used a pic of a 99 to show the generic Norton style of the 60's models. I didn't put a pic in of a 650SS as there's not a great deal of visual difference bar the carbs.

    Yeah, I tried to find a photo of a 99...or a 650, and came across the same picture as you had. Doesn't help if someone else has mislabelled a photo. The 600 was a bored and stroked 500 at 68 x 82mm , the 650 was stroked to 89mm, pretty long stroke, and then bored to 750 then again to 850...or whatever it was.

    Like my R65, which is sort of a short stroke R75, the 99 wasn't that much down on power than the 650, and was happier to rev.

    I hadn't noticed that 99 pic was labeled as a 650SS on that motorcycle search-engine site, as I took the pic straight from the google image search rather than the site page. I just picked the single carb and took it to be the 99 it is. Oddly enough, I have literally thousands of photos of vintage bikes but only about half a dozen of the early 60's Nortons, mainly ES2s and not one of a 99 or 650SS. Lots from the 40's and 50's, but little after that until the Atlas and Commandos, and the 60's bikes aren't particularly rare.
