That picture is from my first Iron butt ride. made it to Clearwater, Florida, in 23 hours for my first 1,000 miles, slept 3 hours on the picnic table at the KOA, got up, splashed some water on my face, sipped a Pepsi, and was ready for the other 500 miles to Key West. Nice!!
Thanks Paul that is interesting. I am beginning to wonder if this segment of bikes is getting a little over populated, I have always been a fan of big trailies and think they make the best road bikes. I guess I just liked it when I felt like the only GS on the road, nowadays all I see are GS's etc. Maybe I should take a look at those CBR 600's, not many of those out there any more
I'm looking at the parts fiche on Max's site, wondering what parts I'll need if/when I do the clutch. I know I'll need the friction disc, pressure plate, and new hardware. What else will I need, what can be re-used?
BTW, I think the clutch disc is contaminated with oil from the rear main, or input shaft seal. Or brake fluid from the slave cylinder. I'm leaning towards engine oil, since I seem to have to add quite frequently. Fluid level in the clutch master cylinder I have never had to add to. There is an accumulation of oil residue on the swingarm, not sure where it is coming from. Was hoping to hold off until winter, but I think I have to do it sooner.
Do a search, there is a TON of info in GSPOT about this issue. You may also / or have a seal failure going on, which IIRC can also effect the clutch. Darkened or low fluid is absolutely a symptom. I got mine done on my GS just in time to not bork the entire clutch.
You'll need #s 5, 6, 7 & 8 in the diagram. http://www.motobins.co.uk/index.php has the best prices on clutch stuff. Even with the shipping. The ship pretty quickly too. I've gotten my parts to me on the west coast in less than 10 days. bradatlarge is correct. You may have a rear main seal issue. Not a big deal really. Just replace it when you do the clutch. Do a search over in GSPOT. It's well covered over there. Good luck and post pics. I've never seen an RT torn down like that.
Saw this over in Gspot. Oil resistant clutch and it's supposed to last longer than the stock one. http://www.siebenrock.com/en/siebenr...nt-clutch.html
Good move, Paul. As it happens, I too will be riding a 1200RT within the next few days. I was lucky to find a forum member who lives nearby, and who has an '08 model that he's been trying to sell.
So have you pulled the trigger? (I've been following your VFR saga up on the bikersoracle and can empathize with some of the reasoning for moving from a VFR to the RT.)
Ok, question: Is it possible to remove the police trunk and add a pillion seat and conventional trunk without much difficulty? I haven't really had a chance to have a close look at a police bike.
most riders I talk to want the exact opposite. why I have no idea... there must be some advantage to the trunk
No mate. Spent some cash on the VFR instead. Helibars have made one hell of a difference. Still holding out for a go on the new K16GT though..
