Looking for a Tach for my 76 R75/6, my tach self destructed the other night on the Moonlight ride.

I checked flea bay, no luck.

    Thanks,
    Steve

There's a good chance I can repair your tach. Send me a PM.

It's a good idea to clean and lube them every now and then (every five or ten years?) to prevent major distruction. The speedo should probably be serviced if you don't know how long it's been since the last time, especially considering the fate of its neighbor.

What type of preventative or regular maintanance can we perform on our speedometers?

As far as I can tell you did a great job repairing my 86 R80 speedo, my hall effect sensor took a crap right after I got it back from you. I haven't been able to ride the bike much yet.

The tach on my 76 R75/6 started to make a noise like the bearings were bad, then the pointer needle disappeared, I think it is toast, do you think you can fix it?

Sorry to hear about the hall sensor. What I don't like about them is they can fail with no warning. They're great while they're working, but when they're not - a royal PITA!

Are you repairing it yourself or replacing?

The tach may need some parts, or maybe not. It may be the lube was old and sticky, or the shafts and bushings wore out. No way to tell without taking a look. Sometimes, if the the tach isn't disconnected, the magnet will rub on the speed cup and grind it down, leaving grit everywhere. Makes quite a mess!

Yes, I can fix it. The question is just how bad off it is and how much it needs.

Ensure the mechanism works easily. As oils and greases age, instead of reducing friction they get sticky. That increased resistance can be too much for the nylon gears and they'll eventually strip the teeth.

The next stage after that is the old grease disintigrates leaving metal/metal contact, and then bushings and shafts wear out. As long as there's lube, they seem to last indefinitely.

The best thing is to clean away the old lube then regrease/oil the moving parts.

I am still waiting for my sensor from Newark Electronics, they must have shipped by a slow boat from China, fixing myself, bean can is apart, rivets are drilled out and old sensor removed, just waiting for the part!

I'll pull the tach out of the housing today and see how bad it is.

Edit* here are some pictures, nothing came apart other than the needle pointer broke, I think it just needs lubing. How do I take off the needle pointer mount to glue the pointer back on? Does it just pull straight off?

I have a pair of chrome saddle bag mounts. I had them bolted up to a 1988 R100RT. I had the BIG Box-y BMW [ABS] system bags mounted in them. (if you know which ones I mean)

Oh, I see. It's just that I'm thoroughly obsessed with the idea of getting one too. I've got a line on one that I hope to pick up in the next few weeks, but I'm not telling you where it is!

Are you blaming Nolan Woodbury too?

    I have 3 in my sights; a T3, a 1000SP, and an 85 and an 89 LM.

So I got this BUB 40mm exhaust, and I don't have an Airhead anymore, I figured I would spread the word on here before throwing It up on EBAY. It's not a true 40mm exhaust, it flares out to 40mm, It fit my stock 84 RT, It could use a paint job, high temp black....or silver, has a little surface rust couple scuffs, not bad at all, nothing you would notice with fresh paint... a few minor dents on one side where the first twist is coming out of the head, not bad, someone of greater skill than myself could probably get them out, or mostly out at least. I have no seen this exhaust on any other airhead In the real world, or on the inter-tubes. A friend of mine has the chrome bub slip ons but thats about It, and those are the only ones I've seen of chrome. The exhaust has one crossover, I have clamps and hangers, stainless, I may be missing one of the smaller ones for the crossover, not that you can't get one or anything. At any rate, I would like to unload this exhaust, I am aware that a NEW stainless exhaust goes for around 800 bucks, an ugly 2-1 for around 300, and from Bobs BMW a full exhaust looks to be shy of 1000 bucks, 2005 prices. Anyhow, I would like to get SOMETHING for It, It's a neat rare piece of airhead aftermarket history, and It looks and sounds cool. Send me an email with a serious offer if interested, otherwise I'll throw It to the dogs on Ebay hehe=D sithlordvyd@aim.com is the easiest way to get a hold of me. Thanks and check out the vid

    Hello,

I am in Denver and want to buy a Honda TransAlp, preferably from 1989. I am willing to travel across the country and ride it back. I found a couple with 13-14k miles on them. If you have one for sale, or are willing to sell, with less miles please PM me.

    Thanks!

    Zach
