UPDATE: If any of the entrants have important news, PM me and I'll put it in this first post as a quote from you.

    Howdy y'all,

I'm kicking this thread off as the official Rally Dos Sertões 2010 thread. Four inmates are already registered for this rally, which is the world's second largest off-road race, only behind the legendary Dakar Rally. Here are the competitors:

    Antonio Narino, aka Farioli
    Phil Bowman, aka BicyclePhil
    Darin Craig, aka Durwood
    Dave Peckham, aka GSNorCal

Granted, the rally is not until August, but we're already beginning preparations and getting some international press. So, I thought I'd kick this thread off as a way to publish items of interest and to get some excitement building. Hopefully each competitor will add a bit of their personal stories to this thread along the way, too.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Hmmmm. Here's a photo of my plane, so I hope you guys are not counting on everyones bikes going with me. We could actually ride to Brazil faster, as we would be looking at 80KTS, no wind! My main concern would be Dave's bucket shipping...would it be classified as HAZMAT, or something far worse?

    Hi all,

First of all, congrats to Jonah, Ludo, Octavio and all the other Dakar 2010 finishers! You are inspirations for the rest of us. And a big hats off and atta-boys to Dirk, Don, Rick, and Andrew whose bad luck got the best of them all too soon. Heroes one and all. :clap:clap:clap:clap

As you can imagine all the Dakar fever had me thinking about the Sertões everyday. After stage 3, the need for excessive preparation should be clear to everyone. Gear, bike, body, mind--not necessarily in that order. I've been hitting the gym, bicycling, and doing some yoga.

So for the bike, one of the items I was able to cross off my preparation list today was installing HID lights onto my 525 Rally bike. I'd hate to be stuck out in either liaison or special section without HID lighting.

I'm lucky enough to be sponsored in part by Bruno of FutureVisionHID. He hooked me up with some great kit, including a super heavy-duty ballast and bulbs. There's a writeup over here if you want some details. But here's the beak they sit in (which is built around a KTM 950 SE/SM light assembly).

Well, good luck everyone coming down from your Dakar high! I know Phil, Antonio, Darin, and I will do our best to keep you entertained until next January :D

    Cheers,
    Dave

Ludo!!! Congrats on the Dakar finish. I hope we can get together with you and Antonio in San Diego when you get back. Love to hear all the stories--Dakar and Sertões. Thanks for posting all the great news and pics on facebook, by the way. Great fun!

    Hi Dave,

We got to hang out with Phil last night at the San Francisco Motorcycle Club, where we had a fundraising dinner for our "Race Committee" before our weekly Thursday night meeting ...

Phil entertained us with enthusiastic descriptions of the RDS, the logistics involved, and the help you all are getting with transportation and bike maintainance over the course of the ten day rally ... very exciting!

We were especially interested in the training that your team will be doing in the months leading up to the August Rally ...

Phil said you'll be leaving for Death Valley shortly, and may be training in March in the dunes south of the border with the DVR guys ... and doing a desert race with District 37 ...?

It would be great if you could keep us posted about where you'll be training and when, so we could ride out and camp with you, or watch you start an enduro ... ?

I can't imagine riding 300 miles of tough off-road a day for ten days, so it would be fun to learn how you guys are going to show up in Brazil ready to do just that! :-) And to hang out around a campfire before you leave ...

Hope to see you soon, have fun in Death Valley, and good luck to everyone in the RDS!
