The right way to stop an Airhead

    I was up and about in the mountains of West Virginia this weekend. Dropped down to RT 28 from Dolly Sods heading south towards Seneca Rocks when I pass a few roadside hotels and catch a glimps of a funky drum in my periferal. Hang a Uturn to find this...

    I don't know much about it, but it seems to me one hell of a way to stop an Airhead.

    The rider of the bike, Tim or Ted, walked out of his room the moment I dismounted. We talked for quite a while about this bike and many others. He told me that this is from a "Munch Monster" (?) some huge bike that needed massive brakes to haul the thing down. Apparently he's just riding the bike for a friend who's not in such a good way health wise.

    Anyway, some photos for ya'll to appreciate of a nicely done up /5, attending the rally of the fives (?).

    Lots of chrome, and lots of time invested to make this bike look good..

    I pointed the rider to Helvetia WV for lunch, I hope he enjoyed himself. :freaky

    That's a Munch brake, as seen on the backing plate. Theofried Munch built the Munch Mammot (Mammoth), and his first bikes used this brake. I wonder if this was an adaptation, or if he made performance parts for BMWs at some point. It's a cool find, and a neat bike.

    The Munch was like the AC Cobra of motorcycles.

    Small company was one of the first to put a huge motor, 4 cyl. auto engine, transversely into a motorcycle.

    Made with all high quality parts, very fast for the time, quite expensive.

    The Munch Mammoth had a 1000cc ( I think) NSU car engine. It's an air cooled 4 cylinder.

    It was a pretty powerful for its day and delivered that power through a skinny little rear tyre.

    Only for the brave.

    Even had roundels on the spark plug caps. :lol3

    For some reason I liked the chromed fuel petcock levers.




    If that's the owner, then he's a poor fellow in the last stages of pancreatic cancer... :cry

    Ditch the roundels and get a different seat, and that bike would be perfect.

    ..but I'd be glad to own it as is. :lol3

    They're most likely highly polished aluminum - like the tank lid, shock skirts, turn signals and a lot of other parts that look like chrome.

    Yocum's Vacationland Motel. I stayed there last month. Lord, the riding is good up there. 30 miles to get a cell signal.

    Heres the Choke assembly that arrived with the Ebay Dellortos that I bought last year.

    It appears that whoever it was who owned that bike back-in-the-day, sent some parts out for chroming, including this and the fuel cross over Ts.

    Sometimes its chrome and if you don't want to be polishing that junk every week, it's better be!:rofl
