ok, probably silly question but . . .

when riding on gravel roads with a windrow of loose gravel between wheel tracks, or riding sand or other surfaces when there are just 2 defined ruts from 4 wheelers, how do you get on if the 3rd wheel doesn't fit in ?

newbie question i suppose, but I do have a secret desire for a Ural combination

You either build it wide enough so that it does fit or you ride with the chair wheel up on the lump.

Mine was the same width as a Landcruiser but sometimes you just suck it up. It didn't matter here as we just rode in the middle of the road.

Quite interested in having a go at building one of these but not sure where to start. Any links to guides/plans or other information?

Have a look/read of some of the "Build" threads in here, in the Hack section. Then read anything else you can get your hands on. Talk to blokes like Phyllis, and there's a healthy little group in WA that have turned out some good outfits. Get on to Bully and he'll put you in touch with the locals.

Wasn't able to make the Yass Show and Shine today, but spotted this in the photos they put on Facebook (excuse the poor quality pic).
Looks like a Suzuki RV with a sidecar! Would have been cool to see it in the metal. Maybe next year..

Never a problem, unless it is deeply rutted by high clearance 4wd. The notion that you have to build it on the track width of a Landcruiser simply defies the fact that it's only Landcruisers that are built to a Landcruiser track width. Further, that everyone drives on exactly the same path. Twin tracks are no problem what so ever. Get in to places where the dickheads have dug it a foot deep, that's where the twin track often looks more like an LP record, you have to look ahead and find a line. It's easier to extract a sidecar by grabbing and turning the wheels than by pushing.

Lastly, if it's built to Landcruiser track width, how bloody wide it is going to end up???

Mate, I know how wide your's is. er, the sidecar that is. Just because we've camped together.....

D'ya hear that I'm off to old blighty in a couple of weeks time? Will be at McGoo's in time for the Ulster GP and IOM Classic TT. Not back until mid September, just in time for it to warm up again. Thankyou for the introduction.
