The day finally arrived, cold and wet of course.

    The Riders:

HektoGlider, on his trusty 650 Honda,

    Bill, on a KLX250S

    Steve, on a Suzi DR650,

    HumVee, on board his KLR650,

TrialsNTribulations, (hitherto known as TnT) on his spanking new KTM 950 ADV,

    And me, on my KLR650.

The plan was to meet HektoGlider and Steve at a motocross track in Atikokan, and leave as a group from there.

So the four of us met at my place, and did an uneventful 200 km ride to there....the bikes are ready to go here...

Bill decided to get the...ummm...drop on us, and managed to drop the KLX before he even left the driveway.

Despite the strong ADV spirit, rampant among us, no one managed to get a picture...

At least it stopped raining, and was becoming a tolerable spring day.
Here's another picture, on the way to the rendezvous point.

After a bit of discussion between ZZr and myself we agreed that a good tour of the neighborhood was in order.Burn a few tanks of gas and go look at the sights and ride some of the backroads. Most riders who come through this area ride the main slab and miss a lot of the best riding. We had 2 out of Province riders, and four local riders that were able to route us through some of the best roads/trails but we did not "see it all" on this trip. We began the ride by meeting up at the MX racing track, everyone was right on time. The first section was the Iron Mine and the classic dualsport routes with scenic lookouts and plenty of red dirt.

The weather on day one was sketchy. It wanted to rain but felt too cold for it to rain.A week ago we had a warm spell, and a cold front had moved in.

We did not spend a lot of time here at the Iron mine, some of the route ahead of us was going to be challenging and it had rained a lot the day before and earlier this morning. We stopped at a few scenic overlooks and took a good route around the open pit.The wet conditions were great, for the dust was not a problem.

Riding around the switchback, the ride is fairly easy going.

This is heading north from the Iron Mine out to HWY 622, all the dirt is red in this area. The first 2 days of this ride is going to be mostly all off road and will take us out towards Thunder Bay through the backroads. We were concerned about the large forest fire burning near our route and hoped we would be able to go through.More on that later.....Once we get out to 622 we will ride the pipeline road out to the old goldmine. We would have 2 watercrossings to deal with.

The water is not too deep....This is good to rinse off some red dirt, as we are heading into an area with a different color of dirt.

Onto the HWY 622 for a short run towards the pipelin road. The pipeline road is used to haul logs to the mill, so there can be some big trucks on it.There is one section that has a set of roller coaster style hills, and if you run it at 80 mph the bike lifts off the ground as you crest each one,and the rider in front of you disappears after cresting each hill.It makes for an interesting run to the turnoff, which takes us to another longer, deeper watercrossing.
